The report I posted yesterday was rather long and I did not have time to edit the video I took. Today I finished the video editing (not that hard with a FlipCam) and posted to Youtube.com.

Since I wrote the ride report I found another hole in my rear tire tube from the wire. It seems to have went through the tube two times. I am still not figuring out where this tiny wire comes from along the road. Because the holes are on opposite sides of the tube in the same place I replaced the tube rather than try to patch it.

The weather has been light rain today so no recovery bike ride today.

I purchased the Koobi PRS Century saddle based on what I saw when I was in Wichita Falls back in August for the Hotter’n Hell 100 bike ride. Koobi was in the Consumer Expo. Many years ago I rode on the first Koobi AU saddle and was pleased with it. I rode that one until the leather cover tore. While the Koobi AU was not what I considered an expensive saddle the Koobi PRS Century is an expensive saddle for me. This is why I only considered buying this saddle after I learned about the 30 return policy.

Opening the box I saw they included extra polyurethane bumpers to adjust the suspension. The instructions were there as well and appear to be detailed enough to make the change easy. So far I have not found no reason to change the bumpers that were installed.

When I ordered the saddle I choose the rail medal (titanium alloy or manganese). There are women’s versions as well. In addition I was asked for my body weight, number of hours cycling per week, primary use of the saddle. These questions direct the suspension bumpers that are installed. My weight is on the edge of one of the selections so I had to decide whether to go above my weight or below. I chose the range where my weight was at the bottom.

Once the order was placed shipment happened very promptly and two days later the USPS delivered the box. Now for the video.

As of October 30th I have about 140 miles on this saddle. I am pleased with the ride and feel and unless something comes up in the next ride or two I will not be exercising the 30 day return policy. The seat is more comfortable than the Douglas one I replaced and I thought it was comfortable. Watch my ride reports for comments as I continue to ride the Koobi PRS Century.

In August 2010 I purchased the Thule Passage 2 Bike carrier from Amazon.com. The carrier fits on the rear door of my Jeep Grand Cherokee. We were going on an extended driving vacation and there would not be room to put my bike inside. As I was getting ready to test the carrier on our trip to the Hotter’n Hell 100 in Wichita Falls, TX, I thought it would be interesting to video the unboxing and installation. My wife, Hazel Marie, is the camera person.

The first video is the unboxing. I am wearing a jacket with ride patches from the League of American Wheelman that I earned back in the 1980′s. Sorry for the bare feet since I recorded this after my evening bike ride.

After the unboxing, the next day as we were getting ready to leave for the Hotter’n Hell 100 my wife videoed the installation on the rear hatch of our Jeep Grand Cherokee. The video is pretty self explanatory but I was injured during the installation when I pushed one of the carrier arms into its opening. Due to the length of the video there are two parts.

Now for the conclusion of the install. The carrier performed perfectly for the trip to Wichita Falls and the 4,200 mile vacation trip we went on during the month of September. By the end of our vacation I could put the carrier on the Jeep in a matter of minutes. I think taking the front wheel off of the bike was a good idea for traveling purposes.

I would highly recommend this carrier. It fits a large number of vehicles (but not my Jeep Wrangler) and the instruction sheet details the arm settings to fit each vehicle. The price was reasonable at $86. This was what attracted me since the hitch mount ones cost over $200 or more. The mounting straps are long to accommodate the wide variety of vehicles but I figured out how to wrap the excess around the carrier frame so that flapping straps would not mark the Jeep’s paint.

Today I received my order from Bike Nashbar. FedEx had said the scheduled delivery was July 6th so I had not been expecting these to arrive today. I would like to try these out tomorrow but right now the weather is not too promising with 60% chance of rain. On top of that our community 4th of July parade is scheduled for 10:00 AM rain or shine on Saturday. But I can go for ride after the parade if the rain is a no show.

I have tried to buy shoes at the local bike shops but the selection of sizes and brands have not been large enough.

We arrived in town about some videos 5:00 PM. After dropping our stuff off at the hotel we went to the HHH headquarters to pickup our packet and check out the Consumer Expo. I have some videos (I divided them into 3 scenes. One of the booths was manned by two ladies who have created a slick pouch to store cellphones and other gear in. The pouch is waterproof and has an easy closure method. You can see more at their website www.stowstuff.biz. I had a nice visit with them. They are in the third clip.

I should have some video after the ride on Saturday.

Yesterday I wanted to experiment again with my Flip camera and record some commentary while I was riding. The route started at my home in Kingwood and then went north to Splendora. At Splendora I traveled west to Grangerland and then up to an intersection of roads within Conroe city limits but not really in the apparent city. From there I returned home.

Weather was great with wind not being an issue for a change. When I got home the temperature was a “cool” 95 degrees. Compared to the 100+ temperature and heat indices from earlier in the week this could almost be thought of as a fall day.

I ended up riding 64.6 miles which was my goal. This is in preparation for next Saturday’ ride in Wichita Falls. Due to the large crowds I try to skip the first two rest stops so being able to ride 30 miles without resting is a requirement.

Because of the restrictions on Youtube.com I had to make two videos. I plan on taking some video of my ride at the HHH. Uploading could be interesting since my laptop hard drive died and I am waiting for the replacement to arrive. I am now running Ubuntu on my original (I had upgraded) laptop hard drive and I have not tried to join multiple Flip camera clips into one video and then add some intro information. I have read up on how to do it but I will see how this does from a hotel room in Wichita Falls.

In the video I meet David Usher as he begins his ride west of Splendora on FM2090. We visited while we rode until his turn off. I should have videoed his interview but I did not think about until he was on his way.

Here are the two videos from my ride. Part 1 is first.

I wanted to experiment with my Flip camera by taking video while I was on my Saturday ride. Rather than attempt to video large chunks of time I took a tip from Leo Laporte and shot 5-10 second clips and then blended them together to form a collage of my ride route. When you watch the video do not be surprised by what sounds like jet engines. Those are cars passing me. The Flip camera audio pickup was much better than I expected.

I now have a better idea about how this will work for my next long ride. One of the problems I had was where to keep the Flip while I was not shooting. I ended up using the short cable that is attached to the camera and putting it on my wrist. This was handy but I am concerned about making sudden moves and the Flip getting caught on something on my bike or elsewhere. So after my ride I stopped by a Big Lots store to see what they had in cheap cellphone holsters and camera bags. I did not find a big enough cellphone holster so I settled for a small camera bag with a belt loop connector ($5.40) that I will attach to my Camelback shoulder strap. This should keep the Flip out of the way but handy enough for shooting.

Kingwood-Conroe-Kingwood

Now for the actual ride. I created a map at Bikely.com. (Click on the map image to go to the actual map at Bikely.com) While the route shows 60 miles it was actually 63.2 miles when I got to my house. Lately I have been trying to change up my routes even though I go on some of the same roads. This ride I rode in reverse of my typical direction. It is interesting that I saw some things that I did not remember from the other direction. Construction activity is almost gone. Last Saturday I saw many bikers on this route but this time I saw only one. There was a ride sponsored by Northwest Cycling so many of them may have went there. Most of the riders are probably from The Woodlands.

As you see in the video the road conditions are good and traffic was moderate and the weather was perfect, in my opinion. As I wrote earlier, this video is an experiment so there are times when you will see and hear some unexpected things. Right off you hear me clip into my pedals. There are a couple of sections where I show my bike computer for distance and such. I am not a threat to Hollywood, yet.

Austin’s bike culture comes in many forms. It congregates at coffee shops in the twilight of weekend mornings as cyclists, clad in spandex and sporting multithousand-dollar machines, ride out to the rolling countryside. Bike culture is espoused by solo explorers traversing the Barton Creek Greenbelt aboard knobby-tired mountain bikes. It defines Austin cool, roving the town on fixed gears, searching for the hippest new hangout. Bike culture rolls up its pant leg and rides from home to work, then back.
