Superintendent for the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park, Russ Whitlock, joined News 8 to talk about a special bike ride.

Q: Let’s talk about, first of all, this bike ride. This is the third annual, which started during the Centennial, right?

A: It started in 2008, as one of a lot of different programs going on around in the region that celebrated what would have been the 100th birthday of President Johnson. It was so much fun; it’s one of them we decided to keep. …

In time for SXSW, Austin rolls out miles of new bike lanes and features
When Central Austin streets become crowded and traffic-snarled and the spring weather is fair, zipping around by bicycle becomes an appealing transportation choice. What better time to try two-wheeled transport into Downtown than today through March 21, when South by Southwest brings up to 150,000 people (most from out of town) to Central Austin. As crowds fill the streets (some closed to cars) around the Austin Convention Center and about 130 venues, traveling by bicycle offers a way to bypass congestion…

Cyclists Al Koehler, Michelle Hittner, Kip McClanahan and Shontell Gaultier consult a map before they head out on a 75-mile bike ride to Bastrop Tuesday morning from a local hotel. The group, which spent Monday night here, is in the midst of riding an 850-mile bicycle challenge called Rise Across Texas Challenge from Orange to Presidio, and funds raised benefit the Rise Schools of Texas. Brenham was one of 13 stops on this challenge…

Day 32: Navasota, Texas, to Coldspring, Texas. March 8, 2010 · 1 Comment. I walked into the Shell convenience store at the east end of Navasota, Texas, this morning to hear Tony saying to the clerk, “Did you just say ‘Chuck Norris’s ranch’? ” Oh yeah, she said. Ranger Walker? Yeah, his ranch is just over the bridge on 90, and you’ll see the sign that says “Lone Wolf Ranch.” I said, oh yeah, like Lone Wolf McQuade. …

Recently, I was given the great opportunity to have an interview with Erik and J from HandleBar Mustache. On twitter, they are known as @hbstache. PedalHouston had been introduced to them by Lynn of Voices of Survivors. These guys are also strong supporters of cancer-based charities. One thing for sure is that they appreciate quality and it is not only represented in their designs but in their materials as well. It is great to see biking influenced designs so it’s time to jump on it!

PedalHouston: What exactly does the phrase “Handlebar Mustache” mean to you guys?
J: I’m not exactly sure what it means right now…

The weather outside may have been cold and stormy, but the reception from the cycling community to Austin Police Department Chief Art Acevedo was warm at last night’s forum at One Texas Center. The forum was a follow-up on last year’s meeting with the Chief, the first of its kind in Austin, and was sponsored by the Austin Cycling Association, Bicycle Advisory Council, Bike Texas, League of Bicycling Voters, and Austin Yellow Bike Project. The forum began with pre-selected questions from a panel chosen by the sponsors…

Comes in all forms, and this past weekend it came from lots of incredible folks cycling the hills of Montgomery County here near Houston Texas! I have been doing Weight Watchers since January and have lost just under 8lbs. I know any loss is a good loss but I had hoped to be losing more quicker, but patience is the key! I volunteered for the Continental Airlines 7th Annual Cycling Classic…

On Saturday (3/6/2010), I was itching to ride a 50 miler. I thought of riding to WRL and doing a couple of rounds around the lake, and heading back home. This might have given me the mileage I was desiring but I decided to go some place I haven’t been in a while and it was a great decision. I rode to Roanoke, Texas and back – roughly 53 miles. This is the route I used!…

Spring has come to Central Texas! It was 78°F (25.5°C) and sunny today, a great day for a bike ride. I saw two members of my club head out on theirs just as I was leaving for yet another trip to the doctor. Oh, well. …

Houston is a suboptimal city for cycling. It sprawls and sprawls and sprawls, and the sprawl is not always connected with bike lanes or even roads with a clearly marked shoulder. It does have people that care about cycling, and try to create, grow, and maintain infrastructure for cyclists, but it’s a work in progress. I learned a bit about the work in progress on Sunday when I rode through Houston’s Energy Corridor. …

Less than two days before we leave for Texas Hell Week and needless to say I am like a 6 year old going to Disneyland. The bike is ready with a new chain, new tires and GPS. The bad part is that is it is still powered by the fat old guy …

Ended the 2009 season raining and started the 2010 season raining. after a 60 mile ride yesterday i got up this morning a little sore and tired, still have some soreness in my back from couple weeks ago when i hurt my back at work , stretch some and waited for jimmy at my house , about 8:30 am we load the bike in the car and headed to denton for the bicycle plus crit . yeah on the way there , guess what ,raining all the way there . we got there , pin the numbers…

Over all, the 85 mile ride felt pretty much like yesterday’s 59 mile ride…although I don’t know how many more miles I could have gone after that 85th mile. After a night in Conroe’s Best Western, we’re off to Brenham, Texas which is …

What a great couple of days in Texas. I got to ride my unencumbered bike all around Austin with my pal Russell. I replaced a bunch of parts that needed fixing after 1500 miles. I got the 1985 Raleigh Team USA worked on by a great guy …

Brendan Leonard’s story is an archetype that Bicycling readers know well: It’s the tale of a young man whose life was changed by a bike. But there’s a twist to Leonard’s arc as a rider that’s a bit unusual—and worth hearing. Like a number of the Biketown participants we’ve profiled over the years, Leonard took the strength he discovered in the saddle and turned his bike into a tool for the greater good. He didn’t just get fit, or crank up his wattage, or learn to tear…

Saturday morning at 10:00 am we left the Super S store in Junction and headed for Roosevelt. Roosevelt is 19.5 miles from Junction. For a first ever week-end ride, I was very pleased with the turnout. We had a nice lunch at the mercantile store in Roosevelt before heading back. The mercantile store was very interesting. They handle…

While recovering from my knee problem, I have been cycling vicariously by reading others’ ride reports. But I had to do something biking-related, so I got out today and did a little bike maintenance. The day was overcast and misty, …

Holy cow, we’re only a little over a mile into the ride and we’re on this death mountain and people are already pulling over to the side, getting off of their bikes and walking up. WE’RE STILL WITHIN THE FIRST 2 MILES OF THE RIDE PEOPLE …

A few days ago I mentioned that bloggers, and cross country bike tourists Russ Rocca and Laura Crawford (The Path Less Pedaled and The Epicurean Cyclist) will be riding into Fort Worth sometime in late March or early April. They have been doing photo and video presentations all along their route and are interested in doing one here. After some brainstorming about venues with the BABBLE folks I decided to contact Trinity Bicycles and see if they would be interested in teaming up. …

After thinking that I was not going to have my new bicycle for Hell Week, I was pleasantly surprised to get a call on Tuesday that it was completed. I arranged to take off work on Friday so my husband and I could make the trip to Tennessee. I am excited as we head out. … I worry that the guys rode the course so much faster than we did and I know they are going to hurt me badly in Texas, but I convince myself that we will adapt as we have in previous years. …

I was, after all, fresh off a 1600 meter run victory and bronze in the 3200 at the Texas High School Championship Relays. How hard could a little tri be? I thought I knew all there was to know about swimming, biking, and running. …

After three weeks pretty much off and out with the crud… or sinus infection – bronchitis – sinus infection triple whammy, I started training again the second half of this week. My last day of doing any hard riding or working out was on Sunday, February 7th, and after 24 days without intensity due to resting or just putzing around on easy rides for one to just under two hours I did a workout…

After a couple of delightful days in Big Bend National Park, we began the long ride north to Marathon. Normally, the winds would have been at our backs. But, a storm decided to blow in, and we crazily decided to just push through. (Note to self: The next time you wake up to howling winds, just go back to sleep!) After spending a night at Stilwell Ranch, we slogged 45 very long miles…

Texas is big. How big? You could drive from Texarkana in northeast Texas to Chicago, Illinois on the shores of the Great Lakes in about the same time it would take you to get from Texarkana to El Paso, on Texas’ southwestern corner.

So when organizers designed the Rise Across Texas Challenge bike ride, they naturally had to give it Texas-sized dimensions. Starting Saturday, March 6 in the east Texas town of Orange…

Our bike tour season has started, and to jump start the season, Pedal Thru the Pines at Bastrop, Texas is an excellent place to begin. Pedal Thru the Pines has all of our expectations of a good ride: scenery, plenty of hills, excellent support, and several choices of ride distances.
This year marked the 8th annual ride in support of the Family Crisis Center of Bastrop. As implied, the tour has plenty of volunteers; excellent support from the Police, Sheriff, and Fire Departments; and attentive ride marshals and SAG trucks. …

…I’ve seen a lot more folks riding Burma Road over the past few weeks. For those of you new to San Angelo, Burma is a favorite local ride that has a number of short but moderately steep hills. It’s a great natural interval session … work the up hills hard and then recover on the descents. Most people start their Burma ride in or at the edge of San Angelo, and ride Arden Road out west of town until they reach the Burma turn off. Here’s a link to the Burma route, although the ride can be longer or shorter…

I did not get to ride the 2009 Baytown Family YMCA Gator Ride but I wanted to make this year’s ride. The starting location was different having moved to Lee College. Parking was better for me but some folks may have had to park further away. I was concerned about the temperature at the start but it did not seem to be as cold as the thermometer was reading: 47 degrees. The wind had not strengthened yet when the 62 mile riders left at 7:34. Other distances were going to start at 8:00 and later. My guess is that 700 riders lined up for the 62 mile route. Since the other distances had not lined up yet when I left I do not know their numbers.

Within 4 miles we were moving up the Fred Hartman Bridge over the Houston Ship Channel. This is one of the highlights of the ride. It is a challenging grade. My Garmin 305 shows a maximum grade of 16.5% but I am not sure this is accurate. A picture of the riders approaching the bridge:

Approaching the Fred Hartman Bridge from the Baytown Side

After the bridge the next highlight is the Lynchburg Ferry crossing at the Monument Inn. This is where things got real slow. For whatever reason the ferry was only boarding a small number of riders each time. It took about 45 minutes before my group got to board. Some riders did not take their turn but cut in front of those who had been waiting longer. The ferry crossing is after the route passes the San Jacinto Park and the monument. This picture shows riders approaching the monument.

Riders Approaching the San Jacinto Monument

After we passed the monument the next point of interest was the Lynchburg Ferry Crossing. We gathered in the Monument Inn parking lot as we waited our turn to board the ferry. Things got real slow here as the crew was only allowing a small number of riders onto the ferry at each trip. I waited about 45 minutes for my turn. Some riders cut the line and boarded in front those who had been waiting. Not a nice thing to do.

We have boarded the ferry

After we exited the ferry the ride was fairly normal with a southeast tailwind helping us until the 31 mile mark when we started to head back to Baytown. The route was marked with arrows but most did not specify which route we were on. But since only the 62 mile route went over the bridge and ferry I assumed the route was for us only. At one point we did come to turn that separated the 62/51mile riders from the 42 mile riders and it was clearly marked. All that was left was to battle the headwind back to the finish. I passed some riders and some passed me.

My ride statistics after the more break.

miles = 61.31

ride time = 4:24:52, stopped time = 1:23:17 (most of this was waiting on the ferry)

average speed = 13.9 mph

average cadence = 75.9

climb = 533 ft., descending = 546 ft.

max speed 33.3 mph (probably down the Fred Hartman Bridge)

YTD miles = 572

Orange, selected as the starting point of a 15-day bicycle ride to raise funds for Rise Schools, which serve children with and without special needs, may have a special guest Saturday.

A spokeswoman with the Vollmer public relations group tells The Record Newspapers that Gov. Rick Perry is scheduled to take part in the first leg of the ride, which begins at 9 a.m. at Ochiltree-Inman Park. …

Nearly four years ago, Gay Simmons-Posey was struck and killed by a hit-and-run motorist while riding her bicycle on Loop 360. She was 40 at the time, and training for the BP MS 150 Bike Tour from Houston to Austin.
The tweed ride contagion crept into North Texas without my notice. Since cyclists in London staged the first Tweed Run on Jan. 24, 2009, the fad of dressing up in tweed and riding around on vintage velocipedes has spread like swine flu …

Wednesday, when we went into Randy’s CompuTrainer room, Jack Lomax was still working out. Jack was on that 62 mile course with a constant 3% grade, and he was about to finish a grueling 1 1/2 hour ride. I know how tough it is as Randy had Christine and me do that one once. I think I went about 9 miles in an hour session. Jack, on the other hand, was over 18 miles…

It should be a beautiful next couple days to get out and ride before rain rolls into town on Sunday. There’s lots of fun events going on this weekend including the first charity ride of the season, Pedal Thru the Pines, what will probably be the biggest Thursday Night Social Ride in months tonight (with training before hand for potential ride leaders) and the hot, hot, hot release party on Sunday for The Dropout’s third issue featuring Austin pinups on bikes. If you don’t get enough titillation on Sunday, the Bike Porn film festival will be making a stop in Austin on Wednesday night.

Here’s a quick run down of recommended events for the coming week…

Ever since the first time my eyes saw the Aransas Wildlife Refuge road, it has been on my list of places to ride a bicycle. This ride was accomplished today as the new Sneaky’s first full performance. … About 97% of the mosquitoes would have to die off to have the area deserve a “bad” rating. Texas coastal mosquitoes drink DEET for a breakfast juice. My guess is this was a once in a lifetime ride for me. One fellow joked about my blood donor shirt must mean for the …

At about 1:30 p.m. today, I turned from Barton Springs Road onto Congress Avenue in Austin, got a face full of tall buildings and was riding in 6 lanes of traffic. I felt like I was home in Denver again, complete with some fashionable dude on a fixie riding towards me.

I felt like a sailor pulling into port, after 14 straight days of riding, and looking forward to a rest day in Austin tomorrow (except, of course, I have to find someone to look at, and possibly replace my bottom bracket since it’s making noise). …

Wednesday, March 3rd 2010: my bike and I made our first appearance as an Austin residents. It was something I had been thinking about doing for a very long time, well since I did my first LiveStrong Challenge 4 years ago. I remember riding around Austin, thinking about what a neat town it was and wondered what it would be like to live here. Now, here I am living in Austin for one month and I finally had the courage to take my bike out for a spin. …

… I pulled up to a cafe in Comstock. It was kind of a sad little place, with a local woman finishing her meal and complaining constantly about everything imagineable. The two owners sat at another table, chain smoking. It was a little depressing, but I needed to eat. They had decent BBQ sandwiches.

Once I left the cafe, I knew I had to make a choice. It would be 30 miles to Langtry, the next town where I was supposed to stay. With this wind, I calculated that I wouldn’t get there before dark. I was to stay…
