About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Commentary: Pumping the brakes around downtown bike lane bumps.

Melissa Murphy | www.expressnews.com

A motorist rides between the bike and traffic lanes while making a right turn at the corner of North Alamo Street and McCullough Avenue, on Aug. 3. Motorists try to avoid safety bumps guarding the bike lanes and some use the lanes as turning lanes.

Short neon-green posts and zebra-striped bumps that came with the new bike lanes on downtown San Antonio streets are part of an effort to protect bicyclists from vehicle traffic.

The posts and ground-level bumps were installed along McCullough Avenue and North Alamo Street, and in the intersection next to the Light Building, home of the Express-News.

Although installed with good intention, the new protected bike lanes have proved to be more than just a bump in the road for vehicles, especially in …

Not As Early As I Wanted Biking Atascocita – Huffman – Walden

Texbiker.net Posted on August 12, 2023 by Rick AnkrumAugust 12, 2023

Not as early of a start on today’s bike ride that I wanted but rode away at 8:05 AM on my Cervelo Caledonia bike. I rode the typical Saturday route, Atascocita – Huffman – Walden for 34.18 miles. That is a little above the average distance on the route in 2023. This moved the week’s total to 224.03 miles and August to 398.8 road miles, almost 50% of the way to my goal. Ten weeks in a row at 200+ miles. Year to date I am up to 6243 road and Zwift miles.

8-12-2023 SportTracks 2023 Rides Atascocita-Huffman-Walden

I look forward to seeing other cyclists on Saturday’s bike ride. For awhile I thought none would cross my path but the first one passed me going the other way on Atascocita Shores Drive. After that several others went by on Fairlake Lane and Old Atascocita Road. When I stopped at the Exxon station on FM 1960 for ice several cyclists rode through possibly on the way to the donut shop. One went inside the Exxon store for something as I left. Later on W. Lake Houston Parkway a group of cyclists gathered on the greenbelt trail by the YMCA but not sure why.

No change in the weather forecast as far as heat and rain. Starting early lowers the temperature a few degrees but ups the humidity to swimming level. By the time I finished at 10:57 AM it was 94 degrees but humidity was lower. I stopped on Old Atascocita Road waiting on another cyclist to pass and the wind actually felt cooling against my soaked jersey. Biking west over Lake Houston the 18 mph gusts made it difficult. Another cyclist (he is in the video) rode in front of me about 50 feet and he struggled with it too. Weather: Start 84 degrees, 87% humidity, dew point 79.7, mostly cloudy, wind S 6 mph: Finish 94 degrees, 59% humidity, dew point 77.6, partly cloudy, wind SW 10 mph gusts 18 mph. I finished before the forecast high of 102 to 104 degrees arrived.

Answer Line: A bike follow-up

By Jo Lee Ferguson | www.news-journal.com

ANSWER LINE FOLLOW-UP: I recently responded to a question from a reader who was looking for someone who would take old bikes and fix them up to donate to children.

I’m still looking into a suggestion from one reader, but the News-Journal’s sales manager, Tracy Stopani, told me I should check with Dereck Yagle, owner of Flugers Bicycle and Outdoor Store.

Yagle fixes adult bikes to donate to clients of the Hiway 80 Rescue Mission or One Love Longview. Both …

Houston’s Vision Zero plans for safer pedestrian, cyclist paths in 2023

By Lileana Pearson | abc13.com

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – The number of cyclist fatalities are on track to double in Houston compared to what we saw last year. Pedestrian deaths are also on the rise compared to 2022.

Vision Zero, the city’s task force working to get traffic deaths down to zero, tells ABC13 the city is building and expanding bike and walk paths as fast as they can. As more infrastructure is built, more people are excited about alternative transportation, but that also means more people are utilizing older and more dangerous routes.

In heart felt testimony at Houston City Council, Robert Grobe shared the story of the day he …
