About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

98 Degrees At The Community Drive – Cumberland – Forest Cove Ride Finish

Texbiker.net Posted on August 11, 2023 by Rick AnkrumAugust 11, 2023

Today’s bike ride was the second time using the Community Drive – Cumberland – Forest Cove route. I created this from the Community Drive – Cumberland – Oakhurst route changing the return to Kingwood using the San Jacinto Bayou Greenway through Forest Cove. It adds about 4 miles to that route. Riding my Canyon Endurace it began at 8:46 AM. Today’s ride is not exactly the same as the other bike ride on June 30th. The extreme heat continued today and when I finished at 12:08 PM my home weather station showed 98 degrees. I stopped three times to refill my water bottle with ice and water. At the second stop (Circle K Sorters Road) I ate 2 granola bars energy for the rest of the ride. I needed them because when I finished my stomach was wanting something. Today’s bike ride went 38.22 miles pushing my week total to 189.84 and the month 364.6 (46% of my 800 mile goal). I thank the Lord for another bike ride.

Weather conditions: Start 86 degrees, 79% humidity, dew point 78.7, mostly cloudy, wind SW 7 mph; Finish 98 degrees, 50% humidity, dew point 76.3, partly cloudy, wind SW 10 mph. Wind was too strong during the bike ride. According to my AXS.SRAM.com ride report I made 23 rear derailleur shifts and used the 35×13 gear for 2:00:32 or 27.1 miles. I’m ready for lower temperatures and even some rain.

Community meeting being held for Sean Haggerty Dr. extension project

By Jennifer Mendoza | kvia.com

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) – The City of El Paso will be holding an open house meeting to address the Sean Haggerty Dr. extension project.

Improvements and a much needed road extension will be needed for Sean Haggerty Dr. between Nathan Bay Dr. to Dyer St.

This has been a long awaited relief for Northeast El Paso residents, as they’ve had to use longer alternative routes to get to certain part of the area.

The meeting will discuss construction of a new four-lane bridge, roadway approaches, pedestrian/bicycle accommodations, and more.

The meeting is open house format and city staff will answer questions.

Not The Only Cyclist Riding Near Lake Houston

Texbiker.net Posted on August 10, 2023 by Rick AnkrumAugust 10, 2023

Didn’t oversleep today. Started the bike ride at 8:30 AM aboard my Cervelo Caledonia bike. I stirred the streets up some in the early part of the Atascocita – Walden – Huffman route and when I rode south added the Atascocita Hike & Bike Trail into the mix. I wondered if I would see other cyclists. Four passed in the opposite direction, one on the Lake Houston Causeway as I rode east and three at the curve on Fairlake Lane. The wind increased during the bike ride. I thought maybe my legs were tired. When I finished at 11:22 AM checking a weather app the wind was strong from the SW at 10 mph with 23 mph gusts. No surprise the wind pushed my wheels around biking west over Lake Houston. Stirring the streets and the hike & bike trail boosted the distance above average for this route to 35.35 miles. The week now totals 151.61 miles and the month 326.4 road miles (41% of my goal).

Weather conditions: Start 85 degrees, 81% humidity, dew point 78.4, a few clouds, wind SW 8 mph; Finish 96 degrees, 53% humidity, dew point 76.0, partly cloudy, wind SW 10 mph gusts 23 mph. The forecast high is 103 to 105.

Twelve rides on the route in 2023.

15-year-old boy on bicycle hit and killed by vehicle outside Frisco ISD middle school

Author: Paul Livengood | www.wfaa.com

The school’s Facebook page stated that traffic flow to the campus was affected and tardies would be waived.

FRISCO, Texas — A 15-year-old boy on a bicycle was hit and killed by a vehicle outside of a Frisco Independent School District middle school early Wednesday morning, the first day of classes for students in the district, officials said.

Frisco school officials confirmed that Landon Bourque, a sophomore at Heritage High School, died in the crash.

“Landon was a beloved member of the campus community,” a statement from the school …

FRISCO, Texas – A 15-year-old was hit and killed in front of a school in Frisco early Wednesday morning.

Heritage High School 10th grader Landon Bourque was riding his bicycle on the first day of school around 5 a.m., possibly on the way to an early morning workout or football practice.

“I noticed there was a white truck coming pretty fast, they all do,” said a witness who talked to FOX 4, but asked to stay anonymous. …

‘Come on out’: East Texas outdoor sports community continues to grow post-pandemic

By Katecey Harrell | tylerpaper.com

Life is better outside. The hardest part is deciding to go, Tyler resident, avid hiker and kayaker Tami Brooks said. Luckily, there are growing groups of East Texans that people can join to get a taste of outdoor sports.

“I’m an avid outdoors person. I’m an avid hiker, and I love meeting like-minded people, and I also really enjoy when beginners and people come for the first time. I like to be there to encourage someone just starting,” Brooks said. “The entry barrier is pretty low, but sometimes people just need a little nudge.”

Page administrator Brooks said there are nearly 1,000 members of the Facebook page called the Outdoor Adventure Club of East Texas. The Tyler Bike Club page boasts even more, with over 2,000 members. …

Hotter ‘N Hell Hundred reuniting a cyclist and her long-lost uncle

by: Markeshia Jackson | www.texomashomepage.com

WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL)—The Hotter ‘N Hell Hundred. It’s quite a big deal, but what could make it even cooler? Riding it with a family member, something local cyclist Brittany Palacios will get to do this year with an uncle she never even knew she had.

“My mom sprung the wonderful information on me one day saying that she had a brother, that she reached out over messenger to make a connection, and he replied,” Palacios said. …

What’s coming to McKinney’s parks? A focus on sports complexes, trail connections

By Haeven Gibbons | www.dallasnews.com

Recent survey shows parks, recreation opportunities should be a priority in coming years

The parks are what have kept Christina Clausi in McKinney. If she had it her way, she would be living in the country on acres of land, but the city’s winding nature trails and accessible playgrounds help make up for it.

The mom of three — ages 1, 3 and 7 — loves walking around Towne Lake Park’s pond with her family, strolling on the concrete trails at Bonnie Wenk Park and taking trips to the Al Ruschhaupt Park’s splash pad.

“These parks and these little nature trails, they’re beautiful,” said Clausi, who has lived in McKinney for …

… “On the Bonnie Wenk concrete trails, you can ride bikes all around,” Clausi said. “That’s another thing I love is that the trails connect everywhere — you can ride your bike across town and back on the trails.”

The citizen survey showed that 72% of respondents are happy with the availability of paths and walking trails, yet 85% of respondents said expanding and connecting the hike and bike trail system should be a priority for improving the quality of life in McKinney.

Currently, the trails system is connected in certain spots, but, to meet demand, more connections — outlined in the recently adopted new trail plan — are underway.

A key connection includes building …

What’s it like riding in 105 degrees everyday? San Antonio, Texas

Well, you start with a full bottle of ice. 30 minutes later, whatever liquid you have left is now the temperature of warm tea ? Sadly, I’m not exaggerating. Without ice, this happens in about 10-15 minutes

Oh, and already having good fitness is mandatory. Otherwise don’t bother. In all seriousness, you may end up in the hospital or worse
