I’m inching closer to my new goal of 27 mph in this installment of the RunFar Time Trial on my first loop I averaged 25.7mph. The first obstacle will be the 26 mph barrier. The ride was almost flawless, there was one hiccup however, when I turned around to head back in on MoPac there was a car that turned onto Mopac as well and when I looked back to check for cars I saw them. I think they knew I wanted to move over to the right…

The Tour du Rouge is a very different kind of bike ride, and that’s both a good thing and a bad thing.

Because it takes six days, traveling this spring from the Bush Intercontinental Airport Sheraton hotel parking lot to New Orleans via Beaumont, Sulphur, Abbeville, Morgan City and Gonzalez, it gives the Walter Mitty cyclist a taste of what a pro stage race…

Hi, everyone,
Here we are in Liberty, TX, a little off the bike route but we had a hard time finding an RV park anywhere closer. The bikers went 87 miles today from Navasota to the intersection of 105 and 146. Paula, Katy and I had scouted out one place but it was really primitive and in a rather muddy field. Katy found this park on-line and so we drove the 15 miles south to Liberty. It isn’t great (no bathrooms or showers), but has electric, water, and sewer…

If you’ve been to Austin, Texas before, you know that it’s a big city. Not necessarily a sprawling city, but a vibrant place with 271 square miles of buildings, restaurants, roads, urban fare, and millions of friendly people with their respective houses.

Along those lines, a few things I heard about Austin during our visit there last week were “the best riding in Austin is usually an hour drive away,” or “over 90% of Texas…

I just got home from my annual Tucson trip. It is not a big bike trip but a shopping trip for beads, gems and glass. I do manage to get in a ride if I can and they are always interesting. One thing to keep in mind about Tucson is that is never really flat, at least not South Texas flat. Tucson sits in a bowl of mountains that look really close but are actually just really big. I did a flat ride this year and still got in almost a 1000 feet of climbing. When I lived in Oregon I considered myself a bit of a mountaineer. I moved to South Texas 20 years ago and one morning I woke up a flatlander. This is not a good thing coming from a long line of hillbillies. …

I have been out of action for much of the time that the bicycle boulevard debate has been raging. But here are some important points about the project provided by the Bicycle Sport Shop. …

The Round Rock School District is rolling out a new way to make fitness fun. The program combines biking and computers.

Friday afternoon, the Patsy Sommer Elementary School will become the first school in Texas to join a unique bike to school to program. By then, something will sit at the top of a pole in the schoolyard that the kids will think is really cool. It’s called a RFID reader, and its “readin’, ‘ritin’ and ‘rithmetic” is designed to help cut down on the obesity epidemic…

Mountain biking is a hobby to some, but it may become a way of life for William Miller.

At Thanksgiving, the Lake Jackson resident told his wife, Madeleine, he wanted to bike from Inks Lake State Park near Marble Falls to their son Aaron Barton’s home in North Richland Hills, near Fort Worth.

“She looked at me like, ‘You need to think about that,’” the 47-year-old Miller said. “She’s pretty open-minded, but she exercised the voice of reason. I came back but I had it in my mind I was going to do it. I had a plan for the whole 510 miles.” …

A lot goes into producing an athletic event. A huge marathon like Austin’s takes many people working throughout the year to make it happen. All kinds of crazy, behind-the-scenes activities take place, some so weird, you wouldn’t even believe.

We wanted to give you a sneak peak into this little unknown world of race production. Our role in the marathon is very small, but we’ve been doing it for the past 6 years. We’re bike leads. We make sure…

I have heard, or read, that you should exercise 20 minutes or more at an intense heart rate for exercise to have any benefit. According to this article, “Dr. Paul Williams of the University of California at Berkeley thinks that the American Heart Association’s recommendation of “half an hour a day of exercise” is way too little.” The article goes on to discuss how excess sugar in the blood stream affects our health. So you need to exercise more an skip the donuts. Longer rides and no sweet breaks. We have some catching up to do with all that we’ve done since we left Austin on Monday December 28th. It’s been an interesting ride, here’s the details:

We rode 72 miles from Austin to Palmetto State Park in Luling, Texas the first day back on the road. We just made it to the park at sunset and had a beautiful descent down into the park with pink skies above us. The rain started the next morning and didn’t stop for the next 24 hours. We moved our tent to the driest spot…

Since I live about 170 miles north of the City of Manor, I can only fantasize about protesting in person their bicycle ban. But I have some ideas about how to make some noise about it if I lived in Austin.

I would drive my bicycle up to the edge where bicycle use is prohibited. I would dismount and take off my cleats and socks. I would then cross the road…

I am not a reckless consumer. I consider all my purchases carefully, and do my best to do without if I can make do with what I already have. Consider, for a moment, my bicycles. Clearly, the Superfly 29″ fully rigid singlespeed and the Waltworks 29″ fully rigid singlespeed are very different bikes — one has a carbon frame, one has a steel frame. And they have different cranks, too. …

The former Pasadena Memorial High School football and soccer player will begin doing it in less than six months after completing his junior year at the University of Texas.

But his first contributions to the medical field will be a bit out of the ordinary considering it’ll all be done on the seat of a bicycle with the purpose of pedaling all the way from Austin to Anchorage. …

The “Excruciation Exam” was for many of us one of the toughest races in the state of Texas. The race was January 2nd at Bluff Creek Ranch in Warda. It started at 7:30 AM and had 150 racers ready to go with a le mans start (30 degrees with ice on … About 85 miles(I did hear a few reports of 87 miles) of hard hitting mountain bike racing. 5th place was ok for my first time, but I’ll be ready for a “w” next year! Oh yeah, big props to my buddy Wayo for the support and for …

Just a cranky old man (58) who loves to ride mountain and road bikes. My payback is that I am a trail steward at a popular mountain bike trail in Arlington Texas. I love the sport, and the people associated with it and the combination of those two keeps me young and competitive.

Reflection on a ride…
2009 was a banner year for me in cycling. I trained more, rode more events, and even achieved an enviable fitness level for a guy my age. The story begins, as it has for several years. I started out with the goal of doing the Hotter N Hell…

The lead article is “Preventing Loss of Muscle Strength with Aging”. The opening paragraph sets the stage:

“As you age, you lose muscle size and strength much faster than you lose endurance or coordination. Researchers at the University of Nottingham in England show that a major cause of loss of muscle is that aging prevents muscles from responding to insulin and that exercising helps to slow this loss of muscle size and strength (The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, September 2009).”
