As I have said before, I don’t like riding at night, mostly because I don’t have enough light available to me. I have been using a Serfas USB Ultrabright rechargeable, and while it seems fairly bright, the light output is a mere 12 lumens. Being interested in a brighter light than I had, I contacted the folks at Light and Motion, and they agreed to send me over one of their Urban 180 models to test. The Urban 180 is 180 lumens (clever) and in addition to lighting…

A freshman Lees-McRae College cyclist was killed Thursday afternoon after being hit by a vehicle while on a training ride in Avery County. Megan Baab of Euless, Texas, was airlifted to Johnson City Medical Center after the accident but did not survive her severe injuries, according to a message from LMC President Barry Buxton. “We all remember Megan as a bright and bubbly member of our campus community,” Buxton said…

Thursday USA Cycling announced the 2012 Olympic track long team. The 19 athletes represent the pool from which athletes may be selected to represent the U.S. in the 2012 London Olympics.

…Cristin Walker (Houston, Texas/Momentum Coaching Group p/b Atomic), with teammate Tela Crane, finished second to Carlson and Godby in the women’s team sprint at the 2011 USA Cycling elite track national championships. …

According to 2009 data, women account for just 24 percent of bicyclists in the U.S. But, on Monday night, female cyclists of all ages and abilities packed the house for a new event hosted by the Washington Area Bicyclist Association.

An innovative evening of collective brainstorming, the Women’s Bicycling Forum convened nine female panelists who shared their bicycle stories and discussed ideas to close the gender gap. Nearly 80 ladies…

It’s a slow week if I don’t get at least one email or phone call from a motorist irked at a cyclist for blowing through a stop sign or red light.

At the same time, I’m a daily bike commuter and every day I see cars that speed, cut off bikes or roll through…

Behind an unassuming corrugated steel gate on Austin’s central Eastside, the Bike Zoo workshop is abuzz. On this day in early December, three young women, recent arrivals from the West Coast, known affectionately as the Oregonians, are spray-gluing strips of leather into the shape of animal ears and painting them white. “To match the reindeer,” explains Jessie Von Curry.

Across the sprawling yard of the workspace, Mike Caballero and Grant Schauhut run along a 40-foot Santa’s sleigh built atop a train of bikes. Connecting wires and lights while drilling antlers into white foam reindeer heads, they start and stop with…

Twelve miles north of Montana near the U.S.- Canadian border, Tom Weis took a stick and gouged a symbolic line in the soil. A You Tube video recorded the moment as he stood in front of a chain link fence surrounding property owned by multi-national corporation TransCanada.

“That’s my line in the sand. TransCanada shall not pass,” he said. Then the Boulder, Colo., resident climbed into a high-tech “rocket trike” accompanied by a friend on a regular bicycle, and they began a 1,700 journey to protest a proposed international pipeline carrying tar sands oil…

By Ian Crawford, KUT News
Authorities at the Texas State Cemetery have become increasingly concerned with bicycles that stray off the paved roadway and onto walking paths or across grave sites. So much so that the cemetery’s governing committee asked Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott whether they had the authority to put the kibosh to bikes at the historic site in East Austin.

Officials saw an upswing in bike traffic through the cemetery after road construction started along E. 7th Street and cyclists reportedly started…

Houston, TX, is not known for its bicycle-friendliness, at least not yet. A group of nearly 60 advocates, agency staff, and elected officials are aiming to change that. A full room of people interested in dedicating more transportation funds to bicycling and walking met in Houston on Friday for an Advocacy Advance Action 2020 workshop.

Well, we didn’t know, so we turned to several wheel manufacturers to see which of their models they’d recommend for everything from road to mountain bike to cyclocross, even downhill and touring bikes. We also asked ENVE and Chris King how they’d build up wheels for bigger riders, just to get the opinion of folks that…

Whether you’re a dedicated commuter or just ride for health and recreation, when the thermometer drops to near and sub-freezing temperatures cycling loses a bit of it’s luster. This is especially true when the sun goes down.

A couple of years ago when I rode in my first Christmas light ride and as soon as darkness settled I thought I might start crying like a baby. It was damn cold. I wore the wrong shoes, socks, gloves, and…

Big Bend State Park, TX – Texas Parks and Wildlife has sent out an S.O.S asking Texas residents to help make up $4.6 million they expect to lose because of wildfires and droughts that have impacted tourism numbers.

Big Bend Ranch State Park says their numbers have been on par, and they are operating as normal, but because state parks like Bastrop State Park, which brings in about $1 million a year, will see a huge decline other parks will now be forced to pick up the slack.

Big Bend Ranch State Park Superintendent Barrett Durst tells us they will be focusing on drought resistent tourism like mountain biking to bring in more visitors.

For the second year in a row the state park will be hosting their Chihuahuan Desert Dirt Festival, a three-day mountain biking event. …

One of the things I dislike the most about cycling in Dallas is riding at night; I never feel like I am visible enough. One option is to dress like a cellphone while I ride so that drivers will pay attention to me. The other is to light myself up like a Christmas tree and pray that I catch someone’s eye so they don’t kill me on their way home. …

Tell your friends! It’s time again for our STCC Express Ride. It’s Saturday, Dec 10th, and is now on schedule for the 2nd Saturday of every month. A little different this month in that we guarantee there will be two pace groups. We had combined the groups the last two months, which has made for a fun ride, but challenging for those wanting a true A or B pace. Same start location, different route. …

This biker better be careful he doesn’t go into any banks to get warm. I would be dressed like this too if I could stand anything below 60 degrees.

Cycling is a sport that traditionally has a definitive off-season. In Texas, this off season can be blurred thanks to mostly nice winter weather. For instance, up until last week, weather in Houston this fall/winter has been downright balmy: mostly in the 70′s and sunny. Only now has the temperatures dipped below comfort levels. Cold days can be brutal, but I just think about kicking the pants off the guys that aren’t willing to brave the…

Poor front shifting can really ruin an otherwise amazing drivetrain setup. Not to mention, it can really put a downer on your rides. I myself have been victim of poor front shifting. My cyclocross bike came set up with amazing Cannondale Hollowgram SI cranks, but used FSA rings. I was never able to get the front shifting to work the way I wanted. So, to improve my front shifting performance I started looking into aftermarket…

After cold setting my Ross frame, it was time to install the ultra modern NuVinci hub on a 27 year old bike. Installation was actually very straightforward and fairly easy. After figuring out the alignment angle using the numbers on the shift assembly and lining up the axle flats to the angle, I slipped the shift assembly on, bolted in my wheel, and then built the rest of the bike. I would say that if you can change a wheel, you can install the NuVinci on your…

Hear “San Antonio”, and two things usually come to mind: Riverwalk and Alamo. True, they are the top two tourist attractions in Texas, but to really experience San Antonio, get on a bike, and explore…
If you happen to travel to San Antonio without your bike, no worries. There are multiple options for the wheel-less rider. This year, the Alamo City inaugurated B-cycle (http://sanantonio.bcycle.com/) , a bike rental system. Automated kiosks are located at popular tourist attractions throughout the central city. If you’re not a member of B-cycle, simply swipe a credit card, purchase a 24 hour membership for $10 (7 day [$24] and annual [$60] memberships can be purchased online), select your bike, and the dock will unlock your ride. A quick seat…

by Ken Texas Racing Life
Heart rate is not usually a very good indicator of how you are working on the bike because it is so variable. The variation comes from the fact that your heart rate depends on many factors of your whole body, including sleep, stress, nutrition, time of day, how hard the effort is, etc. In other words, there is a lot of variation and error to the heart rate numbers. My guess is heart rate can be as much as +/- 5%. This can make HR changes irrelevant…

The November Austin Cycling Association meeting gives a chance for cyclists to ask questions and get answers from the agencies that are building the roadways and bikeways in Central Texas. email your questions NOW to vp@austincycling.org so the reps have time to research real answers.

We’ll have representatives from: TXDoT – both the Austin District office and the new Statewide Bike / Pedestrian Coordinator (how do you like the Parmer bike lanes?), …

I ride my bike a lot early in the morning or after work, when it’s dark outside. That’s why my bike practically bristles with flashing, blinking and solid lights, from tip to tail.
In Austin, cyclists are required by law to use a solid white headlight visible for at least 500 feet. A rear red reflector is also required, but it’s even better to attach a bright red blinkie light in back, too.

by robdamico Austin oin Two Wheels
On a blustery cold December morning last year I saddled my bike and headed out into the hills. It was supposed to be the beginning of a transformation, a year-long effort to mold myself into a cyclist that could conquer Austin’s toughest ride—Tour Das Hugel, 108 miles of punishing ascents meandering through the hills west of town. Since I had never ridden more than 30 or so miles—all flat—my thought was that it would truly be life-changing experience.

I rode about 22 miles that day through the frigid swirling winds along one section of the course, and finished only one of the dozen or so climbs that are considered significant—Lost Creek Boulevard. It was the hardest thing I’d…

A couple of dozen of us rode through the neighborhoods around SMU tonight enjoying some of the more amazing holiday light displays in town. We stopped at Highland Park Village for coffee and hot chocolate.

The weather was actually perfect for it, assuming you wore a hat and gloves and all. I ride through my own neighborhood all the time so…

The route goes to Little Elm, Lake Ray Roberts Dam, Pilot Point and Celina. It’s very scenic traveling through some great horse farms. There are some nice rolling hills to go along with it so this is not your best bet for a first time century. Given the predicted temperatures, we won’t need to limit the crowd but there will…

Like bears waking from hibernation during the winter, our young ones have started to venture outside after the long hot brutal summer of Texas. CORPUS CHRISTI – Bicycle riders and motorists can’t seem to share Ocean Drive and a cycling group is now asking the city to clear the bike lane of parked cars. The city’s Transportation Advisory Board heard from the public today in an attempt to solve the heated local issue, once and for all.

Though the signs say to share the roadway, Ocean Drive residents and cyclists seem unable to reach an agreement. …

In store registration is now open at The Bicycle Company, 3800 N. Mesa Suite D5 El Paso, Texas 79902. I will let you know when online registration is open. Here is the info I have for sure as of today: … The race course will be different from last year, including an easier beginner course. You can expect plenty of beer for all of age(over 21) and food for the racers. Award ceremonies following the race, and plenty of fun times. Directions to Venue: …

As some of you know, I used to lead a motorcycle group that at one point was rated #1 in Texas. You may also know that for part of that time I led the group while riding a 650cc scooter. Now that I’ve switched to bicycling, you will happy to know that I have not lost my willingness to be absurd. This video shows that when it comes to lighting a bicycle…
