There are three points of contact as you ride a bike: hands, feet, and your rear end.

The posterior-to-seat interface is usually the most problematic of the three and many cyclists have an ongoing love/hate relationship with their bike seat.

Modern bike saddles come in a variety of shapes and sizes and range from very cushy to no padding at all. The things to consider when you choose…

from uwire.com
On the first day that saw no crashes at the Tour de France, Austinites were learning how to be better and safer cyclists so they, too, could avoid crashes while riding.

On Wednesday, the Austin Cycling Association provided a defensive cycling class licensed by The Center for Cycling Education. Cooperating with the Austin Municipal Court, the program allows ticket dismissal for violations incurred by bicyclists within the court’s jurisdiction.

The three-hour class was the first of six to be taught this year at BikeTexas. …

Readers from last year will remember that when Nick Magruder was seriously hit and run on Bonnie Brae, the Denton Police were not collecting bicycle accident stats at that time. Naturally, we asked if they could, and they agreed to start keeping track of bicycle accidents. The police gave us a raw spreadsheet of accident data, and we plugged in the data to Google Maps via www.batchgeo.com. You can click on each dot…

Today, more than 50 students will depart from the U. Texas campus to begin the trek of their lives — riding bicycles from Austin to Alaska to fight cancer. One year ago, these same individuals began their journey together in Austin as … In this way, Texas 4000 is more than just a student organization or a summer bike ride. We are a life-changing experience that creates a lasting support system of volunteers and individuals excited to battle cancer no matter what kind of …

On a gray day in February, Jan Gagliano dipped her bicycle tires in the Atlantic Ocean at San Augustine, Fla., and began to ride west.

As a Central Texas resident, driving to the Panhandle for a mountain biking excursion didn’t seem to make much sense. Why bother with an achingly long drive when we are blessed with a multitude of diverse trails in and around Austin?

The answer is simple and probably surprising to some — Palo Duro Canyon. Maybe you’ve seen pictures, read something about it or talked to someone who has made…

Lawson Craddock of Houston, 18, finished third in the junior Paris-Roubaix, the race in northern France famous for its cobblestone sections.

Team Brain and Spine Cycling is proud to present the TxBRA Texas Cup Series Event, The Walburg Classic Road Race on February 20, 2010. This year’s event offers a 22-mile rolling course through the traditional bucolic country side around Walburg, TX, featuring false flats, an uphill finish and, of course, wind — the makings of yet another epic adventure. …

In case you have not seen any news this week, we got a lot of snow in the Dallas TX area. The DFW airport got 12.5 inches of snow (yes that is a record). So despite several hours above freezing yesterday the roads this morning … This mornings trainer ride was the first for the year and my lack of riding in the last few weeks really showed. If nothing else the time I spent on the trainer helped to remind me that I really need to get my training plan set and stick to it. …

…You can ride your trike or other hpv on bike trails or veloways and–to a degree–not worry about this, but if you ride the streets and roads with with automobiles you need to make arrangements for seeing and being seen. I think that one reason motorists discern trikes so well and give them so much room on the road is because trikers are, as it were, running scared. They feel low-down and potentially unobserved and so take nothing for granted. Instead they fly flags six feet high, wear optic clothing, and display flashing red lights that emphatically grab drivers’ attention. Road bikers will not do things like that, though some non-cutting-edge types wear optic jerseys. …

There was less response to the post about the “big” rides you plan for the coming year than I would have liked, but I’m guessing that’s because most of my readers in North America and Europe are still in the depths of winter and perhaps haven’t given it much thought.
Nolan Kuehn mentioned what I hope will become a favorite of mine: The LBJ 100 in Stonewall, Texas. I say I hope it will become one, because I haven’t ridden it yet. Last year, I was all set to head out there for the ride, when I woke up …

The Texas Department of Transportation will construct two Safe Routes to Schools projects with a pair of $590,000 grants. Projects have also been constructed in Stanton and Pecos school districts for their proposed improvements…

The roads of Central Texas are bustling with the sounds of cars, trucks, SUV’s, and the lovely hum of hubs, cogs, chains, and cranks that signal cycling hibernation is over and it’s time to start thinking about the 2010 season. Whether you’ re a total road rookie or … If you’re trying to see how fast you can go, sign up for a race. Otherwise, set an example for everyone and follow the traffic laws. That’s cooler than ending up in ICU. Tip 2 – Carry Identification …
