Thanks to our supporters at Specialized, this holiday season will be particularly merry for more than two dozen community bike shops and Alliance members.

Community bike shops and earn-a-bike programs are on the rise across the country, taking in recycled rides that would otherwise be landfill fodder and wrenching them back into shape for residents who need them most. In many cases, youth and low-income adults get their bike for free if they learn the skills to refurbish and maintain their bicycle. With increased…

Ok, imagine this. You are out on a ride and all of a sudden you start getting weak. You feel off-balance, dizzy, and your legs just can’t push up the slight hills. Soon you start feeling hungry and off-balance feeling just gets worse. Next thing you know you are laid out on the grass next to the…

We are just about to Christmas and winter is under way. If you’re like me you’ve probably had enough of the short days and no chance to ride during the week after work. During the summer you had 4 more hours of daylight to soak up some single-track and get dirty. Now, you just feel…

The Lord often works in mysterious ways. But sometimes, He bestows blessings and makes miracles so obvious that it’s nearly impossible to not take notice.

Such it was for the House of Hope several months ago when Andrew Morrow arrived at their doors. On the same day that Morrow, a lifelong BMX and dirt bike enthusiast, found his new home, a donation of 65 badly worn bicycles also rolled through the doors.

Morrow stood on stage at The House of Hope’s graduation Saturday night, not yet as a graduate, but as a man who has dedicated himself to healing through Christ. After exceptional music, inspired words, and even a magic show, Morrow’s healing process continued as he presented 20 children in Madison…

A seasoned triathlete, mountain-biker, marathoner, and long-distance swimmer, Emi Berger, a vivacious 34-year-old veterinarian, said during a recent conversation at The Star that she didn’t think one could train for the 4,000-mile bicycle trip that she and Kevin Harrington had recently made across the United States. …

The trip took 54 days — we rode for 53 of them, rain or shine, taking one day off, in Austin, Tex. The night before each day’s ride we’d plan our route — the Adventure Cycling organization puts out bike-specific maps for the U.S. We looked at those, and took those routes, for the most part, on country roads. Endurance athletes are creatures of habit. We ride, run, hike and traverse the same routes over and over again, sometimes for years on end. For the most part it’s a matter of necessity; we gravitate to the routes that are the safest, quickest, most fun, or simply those that are available. I’ve talked to thousands of cyclists before they’ve embarked on challenging journeys, and in addition to questions about training, nutrition, and pacing, the subject of safety always comes up. And it should, because with thousands of cyclists on the roads together, riding safely is everyone’s responsibility. Despite the importance of…

Putting more people on bikes, more often
By Kate Hull
For Hill Abell, cycling is a sport and a lifestyle—and the bike is as much of a tool as it is a means of entertainment. Abell, the owner of Bicycle Sport Shop, makes it his mission to get more people on bikes, more often.
Abell and his wife, Laura Agnew, have owned Bicycle Sport Shop since 1984 when he purchased the modest shop on Barton Springs Road as a student at The University of Texas. Seeing the opportunity to turn the business into his career, Abell left business school and…

I’ve written boatloads of articles over the years about PC tech, building PCs, hardware specs, benchmarks and other topics that PC enthusiasts (read: PC geeks) care about. Geeks obsess over details. How many shader cores? What’s the latency? Bandwidth between interconnects. And so it goes.

I’m also a fairly serious amateur photographer. I obsess over which lenses would be ideal, how fast they should be, ISO settings, which noise reduction app works best. I suppose you could call me a digital photo geek, but I’m a pale shade of some of the real pros out there.

Then there’s bicycles. …

Mountain biking has long been the sport of choice for people seeking a fun and challenging way to exercise outdoors. Now, the sport is on the verge of becoming a staple in a new setting: Texas high schools.

Saturday unfolded a balmy sixty degrees, shockingly sunny, and with just the mildest of breeze from some direction or another. That’s what left a few of us worryingly overdressed for what was arguably the first road race of the new decade in Texas.
Aside from the technical glitch that 2010 might be more like the last year of the decade than the first, the Copperas Cove road race took place on Saturday (1/23) in North Central Texas, a short drive from Baylor University in Temple Texas and maybe a rifle-shot from Fort Hood. …

Last week we talked with Chris Carter who runs marketing for Austin’s own Bicycle Sport Shop. He shared with us how he is currently using social media as well as ideas for the future. This post highlights one successful program built as a result of customer feedback on Facebook.

Bicycle Sport Shop has been an Austin retailer since the mid ’80’s. They currently have two locations, 10947 Research Blvd and 517 S. Lamar Blvd. They use social media to market their business in a variety of ways. …

The 2010 Copperas Cove Classic has become the de facto start of the annual road race season for bikes here in Texas. The course is lollipop-shaped, with a 9 mile out route, then a loop, and the return 9 miles back in. …. you are making this more and more fun, the more we do this together. I’ll write more regularly from here on out, and may modify this post to include images as they become available. Look for more about the training on my Cycling Center of Dallas Weblog. …

The Texas High School cycling league will bring the Bicycle Sport Shop and Richardson Bikemart high school race series to Austin THIS weekend on Sunday April 6th. The league is excited to return to Austin for the second year in a row and hopes to build on last year’s successful race despite a scheduling conflict that makes the high school race compete with the memorial race for formal league competitor Ivan Mukasa.
