We held a crit this weekend. Andrew Armstrong of Matrix and USA Cycling did a fabulous job of organizing it, and Adam Tunks helped with registration, Fondren Library’s Rob Walker took HD pictures and video of the finishes and SMU’s Associate Director of Facilities Management and Sustainability Michael Vangeli helped design the course. Rob and Mike’s experience greatly assisted making the course as safe and challenging as it could possibly be in such a difficult venue (Rob used to race in Belgium, early 90’s on the cobbles of Flanders, and in innumerable European criteriums)…

What fantastic ride! Lots of hills and fantastic scenery. I did a 42 mile for my first organized ride and it was great. Several people told me that it was a good test and a great training/conditioning ride. Sengleman Hall is a very cool old dance hall. It was a fun place to eat lunch and have a cold beer after the ride. Planning on doing this ride again next year and going back to Schulenburg in two weeks for the Lions Club ride. Organizers were a bit lax on getting the ride going and nowhere to be seen at the finish, otherwise 5 star for sure. …

Tonight was my first evening ride since DST ended. Last night I was suffering from the “Post DST Blues” and skipped riding. I was determined to ride tonight and didn’t even bother to check the temperature which could have canceled the ride if the temperature is below 60 degrees. My trusty Raleigh M800 (1997 model) was fitted with two bright flashing LED taillights and my home brew front light with a strong blast of brightness out in front. Never mind that the battery for the front light weighs over 3#. I just think of the extra weight as a training bonus. Riding on trails and side streets I managed 13+ miles. My November goal is 229. I plan on riding Wednesday and Thursday in the dark with a daylight ride on Saturday and Sunday.

After a month with very few rides, I decided last weekend to join the Bike Barn (Kirby location) Sunday Shop ride. The ride is advertised as “covering a variety of Houston neighborhoods” and is “not recommended for beginners. Must have intermediate to advanced cycling skills and be able to maintain a minimum of 15 mph for 25 miles.” …

Mayor Julián Castro leads a group out of Main Plaza as San Antonio bike enthusiasts and city officials met to raise awareness of cycling in the city and took a short ride together around Southtown and the Missions on Monday, Nov. 2. …

Anyone driving, walking or cycling down Guadalupe between MLK and 4th Street Monday may have seen them being installed and wondered what they were.

City employees from the Austin Public Works Department spent the better part of Monday installing 13, 3×2-foot symbols of a man on a bicycle into traffic lanes called sharrows. …

Momentum Magazine, a nationally published bicycle magazine, recently featured a story on Austin’s bicycle economy, specifically with regards to custom frame builders. The centerpiece of their story was last month’s Texas Custom Bicycle …

It’s about eight-miles from the top of the big hill on FM 306 to the finish line of the Tour de Gruene two-man time trial. The road is rough chip seal with a tiny shoulder, and totally exposed. The grade seems to go up, constantly. The wind comes from all sides.

“You know once you get on 306 if you’re having a good day, or not,” my friend Pat McCarty, a former Tour de Gruene champion, told me. …
