Elton Hammond Jr., had a late-blooming love affair with cycling that picked up in his 70s and 80s and showed no signs of tapering off.

At 86, the Lima, Ohio, resident had recently continued a 40-year tradition of riding in the 210-mile Tour of the Scioto River Valley in Ohio. …

FORT WORTH – For the last decade, Kyle Dykes has been braving streets from his home in Haltom City to commute by bicycle to work in downtown Fort Worth.

It hasn’t always been easy. There were drivers who honked and others who tried to brush up against him. …

If you like riding a bicycle, you will love riding a custom made bicycle.

Not everything is better in a handmade custom version: I’d rather fly in a jet from Boeing or Airbus than one some artisan made in a garage. But when it comes to road bikes, even the best off-the-rack bikes, even the…

AUSTIN, Texas — Not only does chocolate milk taste good, but two recent studies from The University of Texas at Austin show that it’s also the ideal post-workout recovery drink.

“Serious and amateur athletes alike enjoyed physical recovery benefits when they drank low-fat chocolate milk after a vigorous workout,” said Dr. John Ivy, lead researcher on the studies and chair of The University of Texas at Austin College of Education’s Department of Kinesiology and Health Education. “The advantages for the study participants were better…

What a great race! After raining hard all day, the rain broke about 4pm, leaving the Houston area very cool (relatively) and the streets had just enough time to dry out before race time. After 2 races where things more or less fell apart for me (here and here) I was determined to have a better race this week.

I also had a problem with being a little dehydrated last week, so before the race I concentrated on taking lots of fluids and small bits of food. It felt a noticeable difference with being fully hydrated! …

Monday morning and the 5K time trial was to start, for me, at 10:10:30. Start times changed and I guess I missed their message. Regardless, it continues to amaze me – the human spirit.??

I just finished chat time trialing with a gentleman competing in the 75-79 group. He is the reigning USA Cycling National Road Champion in his age group. I am observing an amazing collection of bike equipment and cycling outfits. AND I was worried about my black skin suit, red shoe covers and time trial helmet. I look like a wall flower compared to some. …

One way competitive cycling is different from other amateur sports is that sponsorship can be a huge deal. There aren’t many sports where as an amateur you can get free equipment, clothing, event entry fees, and travel expenses paid for. But in amateur competitive cycling, there are teams that offer free bikes, free kits, race…

It’s a peculiar sound, hard to describe, kind of like baby seals being clubbed. It’s the sound of bills thousands of them meeting their demise as the 82nd regular session of the Texas Legislature hurtles inexorably toward its Monday conclusion. The cause of death is…

Gander Mountain has authorized placement of what I am calling Amarillo’s Ghost Bike as a memory to Cindy Whitney, Tasha Enloe and other residents who have been killed by a motorist while riding their bicycle. Amarillo’s Ghost Bike will carry the names of the people we remember each year at the Ride of Silence.
I need a donated bike and prefer a steel men’s frame and that it be complete with wheels. It would be great if the bike was a vintage Schwinn, Trek, etc. Other conditions of the bike are not important as the rubber items, brakes and derailleurs will be stripped. Some money will need…

What do you think it would be like to live in, work in, or visit a community where there were no cars? The idea for a Bicycle City was first conceived in the 1990s, and now the idea may be finally coming to life. Bicycle City South Carolina is an eco-friendly, car-free community being built between the mountains and the beach near Columbia, SC. It will feature miles of biking and hiking trails, kayaking on the lake and convenient parking on the edge of the community. …

As Dallas embarks on an equally politicized plan (replacing our 900 lane-mile on-street network), we have much to learn from our Big Brother to the south.

Vastly underutilized, like all ill-conceived bike lane systems, some of Houston’s lanes have since been removed, some have been converted to wide outside lanes (by removing…

One hundred days ago I bought my first nice bike (a.k.a. my first bike purchased from a bike shop and not a department store). What possessed me, aside from the thrill of learning that I’d passed my quals for the last time ever? Well, Joe and I had rented bikes to ride the Cades Cove loop in Great Smoky Mountains National Park a few weeks earlier, and, despite the absolute clunkers we rode and my abysmal performance as a rider, I’d had just enough fun to consider taking the plunge. …
