Last Sunday’s Síclovía, the mass ride that brought 15,000 people to bicycle, skateboard, and jog down a four-mile stretch of Broadway for four hours while autos were rerouted, was the first SA edition of the international ciclovía movement (Spanish for “bike path”), a fresh-air party celebrating fitness through human-powered transportation. In a town where more than 67 percent of residents are obese or overweight, the City-sponsored focus on exercise…

Riding bicycles is like trying on masks at the Spirit of Halloween Store. I have a serious case of bike lust, and to satiate my bike lust I have a semi-permanent collection of bicycles to peruse and try on to suit my daily whims. A fixie for the days when I wanna feel hip around town, a thick wheeled mountain bike when I wanna rub elbows with the dirt, a cargo bike that can transport up…

The only bikes I generally won’t work on are NEXT bikes from Wal-Mart. I’ve had a couple brought to me; the bolts…

Rules of the road: Eight answers for motorists and cyclists
By Gordon Dickson www.star-telegram.com
North Texas’ love affair with the automobile is a passionate one, as evidenced by the region’s history.

Like little love notes, moments in time serve as reminders of people’s deep feelings toward their cars. In Arlington, residents celebrated when the first Pontiac rolled off the city’s new General Motors assembly line in 1954. In Fort Worth, many folks have fond memories… More

…Texas doesn’t have a lot of state or national forest areas that are open to the public, so it can be difficult for off-road cyclists, runners or event promoters to access good terrain for off-road races or workouts.

The problem is compounded statewide by the bureaucratic regulations for state parks or property owned or managed by cities. State and city requirements make… More

Austin drivers could see some relief from usually hectic traffic throughout May as citizens participate in National Bike Month.

To kick off the month, UT Parking and Transportations Services is hosting Bike to UT Day today, where breakfast will be available at five guard kiosks to encourage participants. …

Years ago (I’m talking 1991/1992) when I was into Cat 2/3 competitive cycling, we used to make fun of all the nut jobs riding those fat, ugly aluminum bikes made by Cannondale (they used to be much fatter and uglier than today). However, the massively oversized tubes made up for aluminum’s rigidity loss, given the technology and alloys available at the time. And the ride and response was actually quite good, especially looking at value for the dollar (carbon and titanium frames were outrageous at the…

On May 14th at these locations, you can cast your vote for city council candidates. Early voting runs through May 10 at the Joseph A. Carroll Building (401 W. Hickory) or the new Denton County Administrative Complex (535 S. Loop 288). Some of us like the ritual of voting on election day and will enjoy a nice ride to our polling location. …

It’s time to celebrate the League of American Bicyclists – National Bike Month. I know for some of you, EVERY month is bike month. I agree. However, it’s nice to know that biking gets some recognition for a month, and we embrace it. …

…Texas physicians want to ensure Texas children are doing all they can to stay safe. Wearing a bicycle helmet, and wearing it correctly, is a simple way to prevent injury. Head injury is the most common cause of death and serious disability from bike crashes. …

Austin, in all its diverse glory, isn’t built on the traditional American apple pie and baseball paradigm, but instead on the bike and art one. It is only fitting that this Thursday, Austin’s Gallery Black Lagoon plays host to the Poster Cabaret Bicycle Print Show. The print show appropriately comes at the beginning of National Bike Month. …

Bear Creek Crits are during the month of May in Houston. They start the real criterium racing season for the Texas Gulf Coast. The course is really amazing (rivaling the Driveway) with smooth roads and an interesting 270 degree turn about 300 yards to the start/finish line. The other turns in the course are very sweeping and easy. The only thing that the driveway has that this doesn’t is more options for different courses. But, they had free…

Many cyclists’ suffer from tight hamstrings, even though they stretch frequently. What’s the deal? Tight hamstrings are commonly a result of “gluteal amnesia.” In essence, the glutes forget how to contract, causing the hamstrings and calves to overwork. This is especially relevant for individuals who bike frequently then sit for long periods.

Think of the body as a puppet controlled by strings. If one or more of the strings get out of balance the whole puppet suffers. The body is…
