After moving into his new home in northeast Houston, Abdimalik Abu now saves about $150 dollars on his monthly electricity bills compared to his neighbors. Even in the dead of summer, he never paid more than $80.

Built by Houston Habitat for Humanity, Abu’s home marks the local chapter’s first project to go “all green.” While it includes the energy-efficient features standard on all Habitat houses — high-end insulation, Energy Star appliances, as well as efficient window systems and roofing…

Hello how are yall doing? I am trying to get a group of people together to start up a ride and we can make it for whatever day that is convenient for everyone involved and find a meeting place and hang out and talk about our bikes and what all was done to them to get them to where they are at now then once we have chatted maybe take our bikes out for a ride somewhere. I have been trying to start this up for a few months now and many has looked at it but…

I stepped outside at 6am and it was a mere 60 degrees! Wow, fall may be on the way. Big plans had been made for a cycling adventure with Don Bynum, Richard Golladay, Mike Clark and anyone else who might show up. First stop: take on fuel at Atwoods Cafe. Whole grain pancakes with sugar-free syrup and two strips of turkey bacon. Oh, and the usual dose of…

Perfect day for cycling in the Texas Hill Country … clear blue skies, armadillo, deer, road runner. Quiet road crossing Crabapple Creek.

Conference championships took place this weekend in Lubbock, TX, beginning on a chilly Saturday morning, with the winds of the high plains beating down on the riders. The road races led out with several miles of loose, rocky, undeveloped road, leaving many of those without mountain biking prowess literally in the dust. There were a few 8% climbs, with fast turns through the…

Sometimes it’s used in a positive light: Jon Perez, who has lost 100 pounds in the past year, said it inspired him to stop contributing to Corpus Christi’s obesity statistics. …

One hundred days ago I bought my first nice bike (a.k.a. my first bike purchased from a bike shop and not a department store). What possessed me, aside from the thrill of learning that I’d passed my quals for the last time ever? Well, Joe and I had rented bikes to ride the Cades Cove loop in Great Smoky Mountains National Park a few weeks earlier, and, despite the absolute clunkers we rode and my abysmal performance as a rider, I’d had just enough fun to consider taking the plunge. …

Cycling to the job in Houston is getting easier. Now if only it were a bit cooler
HOUSTON CHRONICLE
Long a city famed for its addiction to motor vehicles, even for traveling a few blocks, Houston is steadily pedaling its way toward cyclist-friendly status.

This morning, hundreds of bicycle riders are headed from Memorial Park to City Hall for festivities to mark Bike to Work Day. It’s the culmination of a week dedicated to the concept that high humidity, heat, occasional downpours and drivers who believe they alone belong on roadways can’t deter Houstonians from using muscle-powered personal transit. …

by Pit
The day before yesterday I took part in the Ride of Silence in San Antonio and must say it was not what I had expected. On the one hand, as far as I know, the person to lead the ride and having the maps of the route never showed up, and, on the other hand, when someone else took over leading it, the ride can only have looked as a leisurely group ride through downtown San Antonio. I really think the public should have been made aware of what it was about. And since, even with way too few riders [to my estimate not more than 70] taking part, it still proved difficult to stay together, I really think this ride should have had a police…

from corpuscycling.com
As the city takes another step towards a safe passing ordinance to give bicyclists more room on the road, the Traffic Engineering Department is looking into complaints and a possible ban on cyclists on other roads. The problem is the areas they plan to ban go right through a regular cycling route.

“This is our main regular route,” said cyclist Larry Donaldson, “We take this road to Nueces River and back out to Lamar Park which is about 42-43 miles.”

It’s a route Larry Donaldson is very familiar with. He leads a large group of Corpus Christi…

CORPUS CHRISTI – Bicycle riders and motorists can’t seem to share Ocean Drive and a cycling group is now asking the city to clear the bike lane of parked cars. The city’s Transportation Advisory Board heard from the public today in an attempt to solve the heated local issue, once and for all.

Though the signs say to share the roadway, Ocean Drive residents and cyclists seem unable to reach an agreement. …

In store registration is now open at The Bicycle Company, 3800 N. Mesa Suite D5 El Paso, Texas 79902. I will let you know when online registration is open. Here is the info I have for sure as of today: … The race course will be different from last year, including an easier beginner course. You can expect plenty of beer for all of age(over 21) and food for the racers. Award ceremonies following the race, and plenty of fun times. Directions to Venue: …

As some of you know, I used to lead a motorcycle group that at one point was rated #1 in Texas. You may also know that for part of that time I led the group while riding a 650cc scooter. Now that I’ve switched to bicycling, you will happy to know that I have not lost my willingness to be absurd. This video shows that when it comes to lighting a bicycle…
