Hills – lots of them. Hills and long, winding roads past fields of wildflowers. Cycling in Fredericksburg can be a meandering ride or a challenging endurance test; sometimes both. One thing’s for certain, there’s no denying the beauty of the area. This is, after all, the Texas Hill Country.

Located about 70 miles west of Austin and 60 miles northwest of San Antonio, Fredericksburg is a popular destination. Filled with unique shops and boutiques, lots of restaurants, art galleries, wine tasting rooms, and B&Bs, this small town – founded in 1846 by German settlers – offers an entertaining variety of ‘things to do’ for…

1st day on the highway, cruising toward a personal all-time bike mileage record of 95 miles…

Knowing that it was going to be an especially hefty day, the biggest bike mileage day of my life, as a matter of fact, I started out from my yearlong Austin home, rolling just yards down to US 290, to take the tour out of Austin and into Texas.

The mission of the day was to bike more than I ever had before, ~95 miles, to reach Bryan/College Station, where my very cool couchsurf host Patrick lives.

I basically had 4 major stops including the final one, all about 20-something miles apart from one another. The stops were in Elgin, Lexington (where I met a nice couple of ladies who gave a…

Do you love riding Walnut Creek? Does riding the high line on the big berm wall before heading across the creek towards the parking lot make you glad to be alive? Do the improvements on the rock bridge crossing warm your heart? Here’s your chance to show Walnut Creek some love and appreciation. Learn about trail building and how to make a trail sustainable as well as what trail projects might be in Central Texas’ future.

The Subaru/IMBA (International Mountain Bicycling Association) Trail Care Crew will join the Austin Ridge Riders Mountain Bike Club and the City of Austin Parks & Recreation Department in February and host a Trail Building School at Walnut Creek Metro. Walnut Creek was selected because of its immense popularity and because the heavy use this trail gets provides lots and lots…

In 1993, Denton officials struck a deal with Union Pacific (UP) to secure rights to an abandoned stretch of freight track running eight miles into the city from the southeast. The line was once part of the renowned Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad, also known as the Katy.

Just 38 miles as the crow flies from the center of Dallas, the largest metropolitan region in the southern United States, the leaders of Denton rightly predicted that their city would do some growing in the decades to come, and that growth would require capacity for mass…

So one night not long ago I’m riding in a part of east Dallas which I am no longer very familiar. While I recognized the names of the streets, I could not figure out what direction I was riding. I wanted north but the sun was down so I had to rely on my cell phone GPS…The cell phone with the dead battery. The cell phone that has a nice compass app that works perfectly…When the battery is charged. Luckily things worked out for me but I realized an old-fashioned compass was in order.

So the other day I’m in my local bike shop picking up a brake cable for a Fuji road bike that’s headed for the CL auction block and the compass you see below called out to me from a display rack. I’m convinced this is one of…

From today’s blotter:
A bicyclist told police a motorist struck him with his vehicle Saturday afternoon, knocking him off his bicycle, and dragging the bike for a short time as the motorist sped off.

The alleged hit-and-run incident, which occurred in the 600 block of Alice Street, started when the motorist yelled at the bicyclist, according to a police report. When the bicyclist made an obscene hand gesture in response, the motorist put his vehicle in reverse, backed down the street and hit the bicyclist, according to the report. …

I did not know Carla Jones but was sorry to hear of her death this last Friday. I heard, anecdotally, that she had been walking up Texas Drive towards the amphitheatre and was hit by a car. And that the person who killed her is distraught, incidentally. The thing is, a lot of people take that route for a walking path. I know of people who have gone to the soccer park behind the Expo Center and then, for some extra exercise, and…

Saturday, after arriving in Fredericksburg at around 2 p.m., the Twilight Twenty: It’s a wonderful and relatively short [20 miles] ride out of Fredericksburg towards the west. … But even if it taxed the shape I’m in at present and even if I got tired at the end, I really enjoyed it, especially (Lower) Crabapple Road, Welgehausen Road [with views even of Enchanted Rock], and Keese-Saegebiel Road, each of them very quiet Texas Hill Country backroads. …

What a great time we had at the 29th annual Hotter N Hell Hundred bike rally in Wichita Falls Texas this weekend. Since my little heart problem a couple of months ago, I thought it best to ride only 25 miles this year, but it was still …

This ride was one of the best rides I’ve ever been on!
Not.
Here are the numbers and maybe you can figure out the problem:
Total Time: 0:02:13
Total Distance: 0.72 miles
Average Speed: 19.2

The only good thing about those digits is the average speed.

Here’s the short story for the short ride:
I finally got the motivation to go for a ride this morning so I loaded up my bike in the car (still a foreign concept…driving to bike) and headed to my possibly illegal parking spot in JC Penney’s parking lot. I was going to head out from there for a 25 mile route. I started and…

The Sealy ride. The Sealy ride 45 miles through very pretty Texas countryside. Looks benign but there’s a very hilly section at mile 35. The Katy ride. The Katy ride. It’s on the Katy prairie – flat, flat, flat …

This past weekend was the Hottern’ Hell Hundred in Wichita Falls Texas. My friend, wife, mother-in law and I went up early on Friday and set up camp. We went to the exhibition and watched the criterium races.
I had the goal to ride a sub five hour century and I ended up with a time of 4:50:38. I am pleased to say that I hung with the lead group (in front of the “Official Pace Group”) for 60 miles. I ran out of water and had to stop off at the Burkburnett rest stop to refuel/ tighten my handlebar…

Line up started while it was still dark. For the 100 mile riders, there are three starting line up areas: the Scorchers (Fast Guys); Keepers (have previously completed 100 miles or think they can within a certain time); and Hopefuls (the title says it all). I was to line up with the Keepers as (loudly clearing of the throat) I had previously completed the 100 miles. The Scorchers had two blocks to use as the assembly area as there…

The woman who hit him told investigators the sun got in her eyes and she couldn’t see him.

“Next time you head to the Hill Country, bring your bike.

From Llano to Fredericksburg and all points surrounding, miles of rolling roadways are ready to torment your quad muscles.

One of my favorite routes starts and ends in tiny Willow City, northwest of Stonewall. My husband, Chris, and I do the ride each spring, when we participate in the Hill Country Children’s Advocacy Center Pedal Power Wildflower Ride. The loop, also popular among bluebonnet-peeping motorcyclists, is part of the fundraiser’s 60-mile route.”
