A Kingwood man originally arrested for stealing two high-priced bicycles now also faces a charge of burglary of a habitation.

Benjamin David Williams, 21, was taken into custody by Houston Police Kingwood Division officers Jan. 27 and charged with state jail felony theft. According to court records, he stole two bicycles valued at a total of more than $1,500. Williams pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 60 days in Harris County Jail on Jan. 30.

That same day, the Harris County District Attorney’s Office also accepted a charge of burglary of a habitation…

Today, I’d like to talk about a subject, that while it’s somewhat uncomfortable to speak about in mixed company, but it is something that every avid cyclist has dealt with at least once in their cycling career.

Of course, I’m referring to…

Welcome to February! For those of you who have taken some time off the bike, it’s time to dust off your bike and participate in some Wheelmen rides. I like to use this month to build some base miles, preferably with plenty of hilly routes. I plan to test my fitness level during the…

The Regional Transportation Council of the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) will hold public meetings in Farmers Branch, Benbrook, and Hurst to provide information and seek input on regional transportation issues, including development of a regional Complete Streets Policy. These meeting will be important as most of the funding for bicycle-related transportation projects (including the 2011 Dallas Bike Plan) flows through NCTCOG. Any state or federal funding of local Complete Streets projects will likely also be…

The crazy folks who put on the Race Across America, that coast-to-coast biking jaunt otherwise known as RAAM, have announced a new series of (shorter!) races, and it includes a stop near Austin.

A March 17 Gran Fondo race in Marble Falls will kick off the 2012 RAAM Cycling Challenge. It’s one of nine races slated for across the country. Other stops are Nevada, Oregon, Colorado, Minnesota, Northern California, Ohio, Southern California and…

There may have been a few bumps in road along the way, but the legacy of mountain biking in Big Bend country ventures on.

Big Bend Ranch State Park and Desert Sports in Terlingua will present the second Chihuahuan Desert Dirt Fest on President’s Day weekend, Feb. 16-18, offering three days of riding for outdoor adventurers of all levels. Other entities hosting the event include Lajitas Golf Resort, Big Bend National Park and the Big Bend Trails Alliance.

“Really what the whole Desert Dirt Fest is, is three days of fun in the sun in the desert,” said Barrett Durst, superintendent of Big Bend Ranch State Park. “It’s about providing an opportunity for folks who like getting out in…

NACOGDOCHES, Texas (KTRE) – Sidewalks are nice when you need them and missed when not available. The rest of the time they’re not given much thought.

“When you think of transportation needs for a city a lot of people just think of the streets and the bridges,” said Nacogdoches City Planner Larissa Philpot.

Many East Texas communities have enhanced sidewalk programs through Department of Transportation grants. It’s the agency which made all…

I hate my indoor trainer. I feel bad for the trainer, as it’s really not its fault that I hate it. I suppose it’s some sort of projection, this hate, as it really is me that is the problem here; I am fat, I have been laying off of serious riding for months, and I have this funny odor that is neither pleasant or unpleasant following me around. (Well, I suppose that has nothing to do…

Lajitas, Texas, has announced its second annual Chihuahuan Desert Dirt Fest will be held February 16 through 18. The three-day, non-race festival ride is the second in a series of annual events aimed at reviving a remote mountain-bike Mecca—a hotbed of marathon racing during the late ‘80s and through the ‘90s—that as little as three years ago, was off limits to those on two wheels.

Eighty miles from the nearest supermarket, Lajitas isn’t your average mountain-bike town. It’s far from average for any town, really. In fact, it’s not really a town at all. The unincorporated community in Southwest Texas—tucked between Big Bend National Park and Big Bend State Park along the Rio Grande, near the Mexican border and about…

Last winter, I related my problem of a U lock freezing so that I couldn’t open it. This is a lock that I leave at the rack at work. I really do NOT like to lug heavy locks around, but I DO like to lock my bike securely. WD40 helped. The lock was left on the rack as shown above.

HOWEVER, I found an even better solution for keeping U locks operating in freezing cold weather. THAT solution is seen below. What could be simpler than simply hanging the lock so moisture drains OUT of the mechanism…

Right now in Austin we’re deep in the heart of cedar allergy season, and once again it’s wreaking havoc on my cycling lungs. They call it “cedar fever” and a lot of people over here get knocked down pretty hard with the punch it packs each year.

One of the things it does to me is compresses my lungs so that it’s hard for me to catch my breath…not a good thing when you’re out there cranking the pedals. Even when it’s not allergy season, I often find it necessary to take in a big deep breath several times a day. This is a pretty simple thing to do most of the year, but when…

Bike Friendly Deep Ellum put on a great show yesterday. Ok, it wasn’t a show really, it was a group bike ride. The el Tour de Taco adventure began at St Pete’s Dancing Marlin whose staff was very gracious. The excitement sizzled as what must have been between 50-75 cyclists slowly began congregating on the sidewalk and garden patio of St Pete’s. Alex Perez was chosen the official bike wrench as a small line of bikes in need of some sort of repair or adjustment began to take form as…

For the second year in a row, bicycle company Saris Cycling Group is organizing a bicycle-themed poster contest for fifth grade students. Last year, more than 5,000 students participated. The theme of this year’s National Poster Contest is “Bicycling Takes Me Places.” Saris believes that asking students to design posters encourages them to think about the benefits of bicycling. At Peopleforbikes.org, we believe in encouraging bicycle advocacy from a young age, which is why we want to get the word out about this competition. In addition to student participants, Saris is looking for state coordinators for the contest, which ends April 1. …

No-drop ride = Better bring your cell phone, because you’ll need directions later

I’m sticking to my training plan = I’m on the wheel of the first guy who makes a move…

Well, the challenge was posted. HERE. What is proper trail etiquette? This morning, I simulated same on a video. You’ll see how things worked. No pedestrians were harmed in the making of this video and I’ll imagine that y’all can see one reason why pedestrians present no danger when I pass, even if they go the WRONG WAY, as well as one reason why paths are a bit skitchy when I ride them. Really, I prefer roads. They’re SO predictable! …

Yesterday morning, my resolution wavered. It was dark. It was cold. The Armadillo blew off the rear rim of my wife’s bike (modern tire on an old, non-hook bead rim. About 3/4 miles from home which is too close to want to fix it in the dark but far enough to let me THINK; “Golly, maybe I ought to simply DRIVE” to work. After all, I hadn’t done anything to get Buddy properly tuned after I got it back from the shop (at a cost of 0.6 Jaguar Units – bikes ARE different). Even when I got home, I thought about it once…

The following product recalls come from various federal and state agencies and were supplied to The Leaf-Chronicle by recalls.org:

Todson Inc. is recalling CO2 bicycle tire inflators sold exclusively at Walmart stores nationwide from August to November 2009.

The pressurized cartridge containing carbon dioxide can forcefully separate from the pump head, posing a risk of injury. …

Dallas, with its knot of highways, sprawling suburbs, and fast urban streets, is not an easy place to bicycle. In 2008, Bicycling magazine declared it the worst city for cyclists in the country. Ironically, there’s no shortage of people who love to bike. In the mid-’90s, my dad served as the club president of the Greater Dallas Bicyclists. Nearly every weekend, my family joined thousand of cyclists at charity rides, held on quaint country roads surrounding the city. I wasn’t too into the scenery then. I mostly went for the free cookies. …

by CultureMap
Over and over, cyclists cascaded down the drop, their skinny bodies shaking violently as they slowed for a 90-degree turn around a small tree that whacked almost every one of them in the face on the way past.

A searing blue sky belied temperatures in the 30s last weekend as the riders huffed onward through a tight coil of hairpin turns and muddy track, climbing and dropping again around a course at times too steep to pedal, and in places too log-strewn to ride.

“It’s the hardest thing I’ve done on a bike,” said Dwight Waters after competing in his first cyclocross event at the Terra X race in the Woodlands’ Terramont Park. …

A one mile stretch of Nueces Street will be transformed into a safe haven for bicyclists under this new plan, but drivers will have a harder time navigating the changes. Cars outnumber bikes on Nueces Street in downtown Austin now, but the City of Austin is trying to reverse that trend with Austin’s first bicycle boulevard. Saturday morning some of our group did a grueling bicycle ride. Fortunately some friends invited me to go to Alpine for the annual Artwalk festival. Activities included art galleries, crafts, food, a silent auction and music. …

Ken Dille, an old friend from my Greater Dallas Bicyclists and Texas Bicycle Coalition days, made the mistake of riding in a bike lane in Austin (as required by law) and came away somewhat the worse. This is the typical “right hook” …

This last week our editors had a chance to ride the roads of Austin Texas as part of an organized group ride presented by the Austin Cycling Association (ACA). Austin has quickly become known as the hip part of Texas where it is actually okay to lean slightly to the left. The city displays this liberal slant by creating, signing, and maintaining usable bike lanes and pedestrian walkways. …

Okay, I’ve been bicycling to work and for errands for nearly six straight years, only driving when the weather was too foul, and I’ve been biking for a lot longer than that. In that time, I’ve come perilously close to being taken out on Dallas streets by inattentive, arrogant, and/or senile drivers more often than I’d care to admit to the Czarina. …

So we’ve got three races coming up this weekend in Dallas. That is about the only good reason I can think of to head more than a few miles east of I-35.

Friday night Bryan Fawley (aka – Fort Worth CX Race Weekend Dominator) has an event at the usually TNX location. Heard it is good but never been there. Read all about the flyover in the txbra.org cx forums section. Even have some video links if you want a visual. …

I don’t like the idea of the many oppressing the few but, I understand there really isn’t a large enough cycling population to support pro-cycling legislation on a local level. That being sauid I’m sorry for the cyclist that are there. …

This race is part of the West Texas Mountain Bike Series… it’s a very low key race with a small town feel. The race was very different than the TMBRA races that I’m used to… not many racers, maybe 50 or so, no map of the course, …

We rode with Santa to a Family Shelter in Downtown and sang carols and donated the gifts and money our club had rounded up. This made me feel very lucky indeed.

For the 10th consecutive year, the Greater Dallas Bicyclists, together with the City of Lancaster, is staging the Lancaster Country Ride on Saturday, April 12, 2008 at 9 am. Lancaster is a mere 15 minutes from downtown Dallas.

Join us as we cycle through the scenic countryside of Lancaster and surrounding areas. The routes traverse a variety of terrain, from flats to rolling hills, with a few challenging climbs. Rest stops every 10 or 12 miles with water, sports drink and fruit. The wildflowers are in full bloom in April and our routes feature picturesque meadows with dense concentrations of Bluebonnets, Indian Paintbrush, and other colorful spring flowers.

Mileage options: 23, 42 and 63 miles staggered start for safety. We have scouted and ridden the routes to ensure smooth roads and scenic countryside for all bicyclists to enjoy. The 42 and 63 mile options take you directly through the Bluebonnet Trial on beautiful and hilly Sugar Ridge Road.
