A bomb blast in Iraq crushed part of U.S. Army Spc. Terry Ligman’s left leg in 2007. A year later, Ligman rode a handcycle — a three-wheel bicycle powered by the arms instead of legs — 150 miles from San Antonio to Corpus Christi during a charity ride for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

But it wasn’t easy.

“It was horrible,” Ligman recalls. “It’s hard on those hills on the hand bike. You can’t stand up and put your weight…

This weekend framebuilders from all over Texas and beyond will descend on Austin for the 4th annual Texas Custom Bicycle Show Saturday and Sunday at the Austin Convention Center. If you missed the North American Handmade Bicycle Show when it came to Austin in February, this weekend is your chance to get the flavor of NAHBS with some great local builders. If you did make it to NAHBS, you should come anyway as there were several Texas builders who did not show at…

Brad Cason knows the devil is in the details.

He is a man who takes pride in his workmanship, something he views as a bit of a lost art form. And he hopes his work will visible at this weekend’s Texas Custom Bicycle Show.

Cason is the man behind KirkLee Bicycles, a company that creates custom-made carbon fiber bikes. He builds them according to arm length, leg length and even shoe size, all in a…

The Bike MS: Valero 2011 Alamo Ride to the River, presented by H-E-B, is not for wimps.

An estimated 2,000 cyclists will pedal 45, 65 or 95 miles from the AT&T Center to New Braunfels on Saturday. After staying overnight at the Comal County Fairgrounds, …

Eleven years ago, Gina Shy was a competitive ballroom dancer.

“I was in the middle of a dance competition and started feeling dizzy,” Shy, 44, recalled, adding she made an appointment with an ear, nose, and throat specialist.

“I just thought it was allergies and that’s why I went to the (ear-nose-throat specialist). I just thought it was an inner ear infection, they’d put me on some medicine, the…

Life is good right now at KirkLee. In just over 12 months, framebuilder Brad Cason has taken a framebuilding business that was just an idea and generated a tremendous amount of buzz as an up and coming custom carbon brand to watch. KirkLee has been reviewed in the Nov/Dec 08 issue of Road, drew some notice at Interbike, was recommended by Velonews Tech writer (and framebuilder) Leonard Zinn, and is being found under the body of U.S. Road Champion Tyler Hamilton as his bike of choice when sponsors don’t force him to ride another bike.
