Greetings all! Looking forward to seeing you all at Pace Bend Park tomorrow. We anticipate 80-100 riders joining you to burn off some of that extra pecan pie. Rudy’s will be bringing some tender brisket and spicy sausage for you to enjoy after the ride and our sponsors have provided some great prizes for us to hand out during the raffle.

Today was our 3rd annual Black Friday Ride. Sixteen folks made the choice to avoid the shopping malls and discount stores to do a casual ride around Richardson. It ended up being a great afternoon for riding.

Starting at the Shops at Eastside, the ride was a 10 mile loop around Richardson. The loop included a wide sampling of the many back roads, side streets and multi-purpose trails that Richardson has to offer.

At the end of the ride, several of us enjoyed some tasty food and beverages from…

I receive quite a few emails from people new to the San Angelo area asking about local cycling events.

Unfortunately, they usually have to travel out of town if they’re looking for races or organized cycling tours.

Thus far in 2011, there have been only five small cycling events in San Angelo. Three of those were club time trials organized by the San Angelo Bicycle Association (road TT series, mountain TT series and the Burma Road TT series), with the other two being a six-hour…

People for Bikes
How in the the world can biking and walking be controversial?

They’re good exercise, fun to do and—as an alternative to driving everywhere—help us save money and the environment. Both biking and walking are increasingly popular for transportation and recreation today, thanks in large part to a recent flowering of federally-funded trails, bikeways and pathways that make getting around on two wheels and two feet safer and more convenient.

But in these antagonistic political times, bikers and walkers are now targets of controversy for some members of Congress. In September, Oklahoma Senator Tom Coburn proposed stripping all designated federal funding for bike and pedestrian projects from the pending Transportation Bill. After an outpouring of opposition from citizens…

This is the second part of Rob D’Amico’s series looking at Tour Das Hugel and his attempt to do the 2011 ride. See here for Part I. He also is hosting a fundraiser that lets you donate a set amount for each mile he completes, with all proceeds going to local bike nonprofits.

About Me: Part II
I mentioned before that I really wanted to lose a bunch of weight, maybe 15 pounds in two months, to make the hills a bit easier. I kept picturing a backpack with a 15 pound iron weight in it, hoping it would spur the discipline to eat (and…

On Monday, October 31 the Energy Corridor District will be submitting a federal grant application (TIGER III) for their Shared-Use Pathways Project. The Energy Corridor District is contributing local matching funds and will be responsible for future maintenance of the project. BikeHouston and numerous local organizations have written letters of support in favor of this important project.

About the Project
The Energy Corridor Shared-Use Pathways Project encompasses four transportation corridors along SH 6 and Eldridge Parkway. The shared-use pathway is a 13-mile path designated specifically for pedestrians and cyclists. It will connect residential…

Last Saturday (22 Oct, 2011) Gil Jones and I cycled from my home on the west shore of Lake Buchanan, TX to Junction, TX. Gil and I cycle to many nice little towns in central Texas. Junction just happens to also be 101.5 miles away, if one takes the scenic route. I may mention that 101.5 thing again somewhere. …

Texas got dumped on last night. I’m not talking about the Rangers game either. (#collapse) Well, maybe I am just a little bit. The Dallas area got hit with their first winter shower of the year last night putting up to a half inch of rain on our trails. The rain is much needed and…

Description: The History of the EB
The idea for the annual Enchilada Buffet Ride started with a simple blog post in 2008 by one Austin Mountain Biker with the extreme urge to ride all the Parks in Austin in one day. The entire post from the Bike Mojo Forum site is below:

It’s been on the backburner for almost 2 years now. Last year we went as far as planning it and it fizzled out. This year I’m setting a day and am going to show up. If I am by myself then so be it. I’ve wanted to attempt this ride for a long time. …

Striders Duathlon, the oldest run-bike-run event in Texas, has been canceled for 2012 after being a San Angelo classic for 18 years.

The event promotion company, Ironhead Race Productions, cited “a down turned economy and the vast and continuing proliferation of multisport events without regard to impact” as being the reason that continuation of the event was no longer fiscally possible. …

Being a clinic open to beginners, we’ll tackle the most important skill newbies need to learn: dismounting and remounting the bike. We’ll…

By NICKI BRUCE LOGAN Herald Lifestyles Editor
Nothing brings out the cowboy in a Texan like Plainview’s Cowboy Days, so expect the town to be overrun by boots and buckles when the 13th edition is held Sept. 16-18.

…Activities on Saturday, Sept. 17 will begin early with registration for the Plainview Chamber of Commerce-sponsored Hale on Wheels Bike Ride and a 5K run. Gabriel Martinez and Ed Self are in charge of the bike ride, which was hugely popular last year, and Ron Appling is organizing the run. Participants will be on their way between 8:30-8:45 a.m., leaving Amigos and United Supermarket volunteers time to assist on the route. Members of Soroptimist International will man way stations for the bike ride.

New this year will be the Texas Tech University bike team coming to lead off the bike race. …

Ever wanted to line up next to a cycling or running hero?

No problem — just participate in San Angelo events, and you’ll probably be lined up next to someone who’s been on the podium recently.

Although the larger events put on by out-of-town promoters get the most attention, our local races are the bread-and-butter for San Angelo athletes of all ability levels.

You might be surprised both at how many local events there are and the “race resumes” of some local athletes who participate in those events. …

The ARR Board regrets that there will be no Monthly Club Ride in October due to the fact that we are busy coordinating the Volunteer Appreciation Event.

Message from Travis County Parks Division Manager

Reimers Ranch Park was impacted by the recent wildfires, and fire crews are still fighting small fires in the park. Before Reimers can reopen, park staff need to clear fallen trees and other hazards from the various park trails. Therefore, the park is going to be closed until Saturday, September 17.

Eric Marcotte (Pista Palace) lapped the field and got the better of former ProTour breakaway companion Pat McCarty (Matrix-Richardson Bike Mart) in the finale of the Texas Tough GP Thursday night in Dallas. The pair survived a long breakaway with Kyle Wamsley (Bissell) and Karl Menzies (UnitedHealthcare-Maxxis) and caught the field in the closing laps. …
