…Why I do in recreation what I do is more complex — perhaps complicated in part by having more than a couple of hobbies and endeavors that I enjoy. For purposes of this analysis I think the cycling is the hardest to explain. Put the question in the context of today’s 40 mile ride and the question becomes more difficult.

At about the 32 mile point we were on the Old Spicewood Rd (Old Blanco Rd if you are coming from Spicewood)…

After the blessed break in our drought last week, the Dirt Derby was punted due to an overly muddy course. The this week has allowed everything to dry out nicely with the series back to its regular schedule this Tuesday. As always, Austin on Two Wheels will be hosting a free beginner cyclocross clinic before the beginner race at 5:45…

When people use public transportation infrastructure, whether by walking on a sidewalk, driving a car, riding a bus, catching a train or pedaling a bicycle, they have a destination in mind. The public investment in transportation connects where people are with where they want to go, and how they want to get there.

A bomb blast in Iraq crushed part of U.S. Army Spc. Terry Ligman’s left leg in 2007. A year later, Ligman rode a handcycle — a three-wheel bicycle powered by the arms instead of legs — 150 miles from San Antonio to Corpus Christi during a charity ride for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

This weekend framebuilders from all over Texas and beyond will descend on Austin for the 4th annual Texas Custom Bicycle Show Saturday and Sunday at the Austin Convention Center. If you missed the North American Handmade Bicycle Show when it came to Austin in February, this weekend is your chance to get the flavor of NAHBS with some great local builders. If you did make it to NAHBS, you should come anyway as there were several Texas builders who did not show at…

If you have been reading this site long, you will know that I have a bias towards road riding and racing. This is partly due to the focus we’ve had on urban cycling and getting more people out of cars and on bikes. It is also based on how I got back onto a bike after over a decade off the bike. It’s finally time to find my dirty side. In a new weekly series, I will share my experience converting to knobby…

Ft Davis was fun; now what?: Decisions, Decisions
From the Ft Davis hub one can leave to the southeast toward Alpine, the largest town in the ‘Bend, still on highway 118. Or perhaps point south-southeast on hwy 17 toward Marfa. The ride on 118 to Alpine is definitely the prettier of the two, but either way, the rider will want to get to both towns for a look and a discovery session. Neither town is more than a very easy day’s ride, thus the temptation is to again simply pass thru, grabbing a quick exposure. Bad idea, for both these are full of surprises. This article isn’t intended as a travelogue, but to lead the prospect toward…

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is working with The Hive to recall about 500 Revl carbon fiber bicycle brakes that can break at the cable clamping area.

The recall involves black Revl carbon road bicycle brakes with date codes 41B, 44B, 45B, 53B, 13C and 16C printed on the underside of the carbon brake arms. “Revl” is printed on the brake.

The Taiwanese-made brakes were sold at bike shops from September 2009 through August 2010 for about $390 per set. The CPSC said there have been no injuries reported from brake failures. …

For the last couple years I’ve been somewhat intrigued by cyclocross, it combines dirt, mud and obstacles on modified road bikes. What’s not to love about that! The only drawback is I don’t own a cyclocross bike. The bikes are very similar to a road bike however the tires are a bit wider and have tread. The other big difference…

After a relatively quiet fall, things are picking up event wise in October. There are a ridiculous amount of things going on this weekend and the weather should be perfect for riding your bike. Make sure to stop by the Texas Custom Bicycle Show and there are not one, but two cyclocross races this weekend (one at the TCBS so you can kill 2 bird with one stone!)
