Since they were elected into power on Capitol Hill last fall, Congressional Republicans have been on a war path to eliminate government spending they consider wasteful. The latest project on the chopping block is the Transportation Enhancements (TE) program which creates safe space on the roads for vulnerable users like cyclists and pedestrians and to a lesser degree highway beautification. Cleanup efforts underway at fire-blackened Bastrop State Park

BASTROP – Bastrop State Park will be closed through at least October as Texas Parks and Wildlife Department personnel continue to douse hot spots on the mostly-burned property and begin assessing damage as well as developing a plan to get the park reopened to the public.

Fort Belknap is a jewel in Young County, but it should be used more to attract tourists.
That’s the message county commissioners heard Monday when Margaret Hoogstra, executive director of Texas Forts Trail, discussed the trail that includes eight frontier forts in north and central Texas.

Hoogstra explained that for decades, Texas has been split into 10 travel regions to attract tourists. The forts trail is designed to draw those interested in Texas history. Best of all, the regions do their job. …

…I am back into the swing of riding, and feeling pretty good about myself. I did try to go for a longer ride on Labor Day, but the wind was terrible, and I found myself lying by the side of the road about twenty miles in, with my chest heaving like I just started riding. This weekend I’m working the RV Supershow, but I’ll do my best to squeeze in a ride on Sunday morning. I need to do at least 35 or 40 miles in order to build up to…

Never Take a Backwarmer on a Ride Through Hell
At 4:53pm CT on Sunday, 1 August 2010, I pulled an ATM slip at a 7-11 in Wichita Falls to log the end of what should be certified as my 51st Iron Butt ride and my 4th Bun Burner 1500, covering a distance of 1,515 miles in 35 hours 35 minutes. My route was from Miami Beach FL to Wichita Falls TX via Gulfport MS, Alexandria LA and Dallas/Fort Worth ( see map at tinyurl[dot]com/miamibeach2wichitafalls ). …

We were able to leap back up to the top of the podium this year on yet another back-breaking course with many feet of climbing, a very strong field, and an extended warm up/ cool down to get the day to Walburg workload levels. …
