After completing an early morning 30 mile ride last Sunday, Southridge resident Alex Newton did not expect to get hit by a car, lectured by a responding police officer, and ticketed for failure-to-yield, all in his own neighborhood.

I had just stopped beside the neighborhood swimming pool on Woodbrook at Hollyhill and was about to cross Hollyhill on my way home. I do not remember seeing anyone while I was at the stop sign or when I started off into the intersection, but as I was getting clipped into my pedals…

Caffeine preserves muscle sugar. The limiting factor in racing in any sport is the time that it takes to get enough oxygen into your muscles to burn food for energy, so anything that requires less oxygen allows you to race faster. Sugar stored in muscles, called glycogen, requires less oxygen than fat or protein. Anything that helps you keep sugar in muscles longer gives you greater endurance. …

Mountain biking as a high school sport? I wish they’d had it when I was in school …

It could happen in Texas, if the Texas High School Cycling League wins its bid to become a project league of the National Interscholastic Cycling Association in 2011. If that happens, the organization plans to start a racing league for Texas high school students in spring 2012. …

Probably not. A study from Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland shows that “aerodynamic position” (with the head down near the handlebars) causes bicycle riders to tire earlier when they ride fast (European Journal of Applied Physiology, March 2010 and January 2006). Researchers compared how quickly cyclists tired during high-intensity cycling…

We have now completed the first leg of our traverse of Texas and are taking a rest day in Del Rio….which I haven’t even had a chance to explore yet. The next leg includes the “hill country of Texas” and the weather is threatening a week of thunderstorms, so Gary and I will be splitting up. There is a flatter route through San Antonio that will be quicker and suits Gary’s agenda better. I will head for the hills and find out how well my tent really works! Before leaving Alpine on Monday I shipped 5 lbs back home and now I feel much better…

This is a race report of Ronde von Manor, a single-day race hosted by Velossimo Racing on the 27th of March. It’s been a while since I last posted, so my memory is kind of hazy with this one. My participation in this race was pretty much on a whim, especially since the Texas State collegiate race, which would have coincided with this race, was canceled the week before. This was the first USCF race…

A good friend of mine started up a new weekly ride last Tuesday, and as it’s almost another Tuesday again here’s the dirt on what’s going down:

The Tuesday morning ride is for those of us that are tired of sleeping off our hangovers in the mornings…and seeing how some of us don’t have to work first thing in the morning, why not get on our bikes and simply ride? …

Lytle to Uvalde: Pathfinder’s Wrong Turn and the Ruins of D’Hanis
Wednesday March 10, 2010, 79 miles (127 km) – Total so far: 153 miles (246 km)
Pathfinder had calculated it to be a 70-mile ride from Lytle to Uvalde.
However, further down the highway, the surface of the back roads changed considerably. I could tell Pathfinder was unusually taken aback. I was not going to elaborate on a wrong turn that added six miles to our ride before we even got to Highway 90 near Hondo. I had after all, added a few more miles in my determination to see the ruins of Old D’Hanis. …

The local community is invited to venture out to Embassy Suites and the San Marcos Conference Center on April 6 to give them a San Marcos-style welcome on their first over-night stop on their six-day, 350-mile bicycle ride from San Antonio to Arlington. …

We caught up with local biking celebrity ‘Bikin Mike’, who is the founder and ‘brains’ behind the ‘Tour Dallas’ event. It’s important to note that it’s ‘Tour Dallas’ which is something you DO and not ‘Tour of Dallas’ a thing or an event.

He was gracious enough, to let us bounce off a few questions of him:

How did the ‘Tour’ come into existence and what goal are your trying to accomplish?

I felt like there were no bike rides for the casual cyclist. 80% of all bikes sold…

Day 56 – Rest day in Schulenburg, Texas: Let’s go to Schulenburg, Texas – me and Irene and the bikes . . .
Friday March 26, 2010
This has been a good day. The Schulenburg RV park is not scenic. It’s fairly close quarters, just south of I-10 and right next to Hwy. 77 – but it’s a good place. We are surrounded by RV’s, which we’ve learned can be a desirable thing. Most people retreat inside at night and it’s peaceful. The toilets, showers and laundry are mostly ours and beautifully clean. The weather was still chilly last night – in the mid-40′s, but the sleeping wasn’t too bad. Today was a beautiful sunny day in the 70′s. …

from www.texasphotoforum.com
So, I helped out with a race over the weekend. Helped fill water bottles on day, the race day set out to get some pictures. Few things I learned. Be sure to apply sunblock. I did but it was already after I noticed I was getting a little burned. …

After only a few weeks, it’s clear peopleforbikes.org has hit on something pretty powerful.

So far, more than 6,500 people have signed our pledge in support of biking — and our numbers keep growing every hour. Riders across the country are showing that Americans of all walks of life think that bicycling is important and warrants further support from our leaders.

We’ve got big plans to build this movement, but we also know the best ideas will come from riders like you. As one of the first people to sign the pledge, your opinion on how we shape the future of peopleforbikes.org is important to us.

Benefits of High-Intensity Interval Training.
To be competitive, all athletes must train very intensely some of the time. New research from McMaster University in Canada shows that short term, high-intensity interval training on a bike can also provide you with all the health and fitness benefits of exercising less intensely for a much longer period of time (The Journal of Physiology, March 2010). Subjects used a standard stationary bicycle and performed a workout of ten 1-minute sprints with a 1-minute rest between each at 95 percent of their maximal…

After thinking that I was not going to have my new bicycle for Hell Week, I was pleasantly surprised to get a call on Tuesday that it was completed. I arranged to take off work on Friday so my husband and I could make the trip to Tennessee. I am excited as we head out. … I worry that the guys rode the course so much faster than we did and I know they are going to hurt me badly in Texas, but I convince myself that we will adapt as we have in previous years. …

After a couple of delightful days in Big Bend National Park, we began the long ride north to Marathon. Normally, the winds would have been at our backs. But, a storm decided to blow in, and we crazily decided to just push through. (Note to self: The next time you wake up to howling winds, just go back to sleep!) After spending a night at Stilwell Ranch, we slogged 45 very long miles…

Motivated by the physical challenge and the desire to see Texas from the seat of a bike, the cyclists are driven even more by the mission of the ride: to raise funds for the nonprofit Rise Schools of Texas. …

Texas is big. How big? You could drive from Texarkana in northeast Texas to Chicago, Illinois on the shores of the Great Lakes in about the same time it would take you to get from Texarkana to El Paso, on Texas’ southwestern corner.

So when organizers designed the Rise Across Texas Challenge bike ride, they naturally had to give it Texas-sized dimensions. Starting Saturday, March 6 in the east Texas town of Orange…

Our bike tour season has started, and to jump start the season, Pedal Thru the Pines at Bastrop, Texas is an excellent place to begin. Pedal Thru the Pines has all of our expectations of a good ride: scenery, plenty of hills, excellent support, and several choices of ride distances.
This year marked the 8th annual ride in support of the Family Crisis Center of Bastrop. As implied, the tour has plenty of volunteers; excellent support from the Police, Sheriff, and Fire Departments; and attentive ride marshals and SAG trucks. …

Yesterday was a good mountain bike ride and I discovered some crazy trails at Memorial, borderline unrideable but I tried anyways. Maybe it would be a good paydirt effort to get them into shape. …I’ve seen a lot more folks riding Burma Road over the past few weeks. For those of you new to San Angelo, Burma is a favorite local ride that has a number of short but moderately steep hills. It’s a great natural interval session … work the up hills hard and then recover on the descents. Most people start their Burma ride in or at the edge of San Angelo, and ride Arden Road out west of town until they reach the Burma turn off. Here’s a link to the Burma route, although the ride can be longer or shorter…

Wednesday, when we went into Randy’s CompuTrainer room, Jack Lomax was still working out. Jack was on that 62 mile course with a constant 3% grade, and he was about to finish a grueling 1 1/2 hour ride. I know how tough it is as Randy had Christine and me do that one once. It should be a beautiful next couple days to get out and ride before rain rolls into town on Sunday. There’s lots of fun events going on this weekend including the first charity ride of the season, Pedal Thru the Pines, what will probably be the biggest Thursday Night Social Ride in months tonight (with training before hand for potential ride leaders) and the hot, hot, hot release party on Sunday for The Dropout’s third issue featuring Austin pinups on bikes. At about 1:30 p.m. today, I turned from Barton Springs Road onto Congress Avenue in Austin, got a face full of tall buildings and was riding in 6 lanes of traffic. I felt like I was home in Denver again, complete with some fashionable dude on a fixie riding towards me.

I felt like a sailor pulling into port, after 14 straight days of riding, and looking forward to a rest day in Austin tomorrow (except, of course, I have to find someone to look at, and possibly replace my bottom bracket since it’s making noise). …

Wednesday, March 3rd 2010: my bike and I made our first appearance as an Austin residents. It was something I had been thinking about doing for a very long time, well since I did my first LiveStrong Challenge 4 years ago. I remember riding around Austin, thinking about what a neat town it was and wondered what it would be like to live here. Now, here I am living in Austin for one month and I finally had the courage to take my bike out for a spin. …

… I pulled up to a cafe in Comstock. It was kind of a sad little place, with a local woman finishing her meal and complaining constantly about everything imagineable. The two owners sat at another table, chain smoking. It was a little depressing, but I needed to eat. They had decent BBQ sandwiches.

Once I left the cafe, I knew I had to make a choice. It would be 30 miles to Langtry, the next town where I was supposed to stay. With this wind, I calculated that I wouldn’t get there before dark. I was to stay…

Sweet. Had to do a bit of explaining on this …

I have a ride in South Texas on the 13th – Jalapeno 100. This ride is something else. The last time I participated in this ride was two years ago. It’s a 50 mile (with other routes of 100 and 63 miles) out and back route. …
