The cycling scene is starting to slow down towards its winter slumber… if you can call 60 degrees and sunny winter! Still, there are some great end of season tours on Saturday and the return of the “Dude Looks Like A Lady Ride” on Sunday.

Here’s a quick run down of recommended events for the coming week from our comprehensive calendar of all cycling events. Thanks to Jason at ATXBS for letting us know about some events we couldn’t find elsewhere. As…

What do you think it would be like to live in, work in, or visit a community where there were no cars? The idea for a Bicycle City was first conceived in the 1990s, and now the idea may be finally coming to life. Bicycle City South Carolina is an eco-friendly, car-free community being built between the mountains and the beach near Columbia, SC. It will feature miles of biking and hiking trails, kayaking on the lake and convenient parking on the edge of the community. …

Houston, Texas installed a bicycle lane network in the mid-1990s (although some say that rather than being planned, it was drawn and quartered by TxDOT, Wilbur Smith Engineering, BikeFed Consulting, and the City of Houston). As Dallas embarks on an equally politicized plan (replacing our 900 lane-mile on-street network), we have much to learn from our Big Brother to the south.

Vastly underutilized, like all ill-conceived bike lane systems, some of Houston’s lanes have since been removed, some have been converted to wide outside lanes (by removing…

On the final day of the tour we rode on scenic multi-use trails and paths (right when we thought that perhaps cyclists in this sprawling metro area were relegated to sharing the road with cars on unmarked streets) as we visited shops in central Dallas. We took the White Rock Creek Trail and a portion of the White Rock Lake loop, riding past swanky…

The bicycle trip from Hollywood Park in north central San Antonio to Gruene was, in a word, outstanding. I started planning for the trip in April and the route I chose turned out to be perfect. Like my previous tours, the experience of riding my bicycle on older, less-traveled roads…

It was an early morning race to honor a life lost too early. More than one thousand people turned out for today’s 33rd Annual Transmountain Challenge. This year the marathon was dedicated to Elizabeth Hernandez, the 33 year old single mother killed by an SUV last weekend as she was training for the race. Some runners wore custom t-shirts with Hernandez’s face printed on them. Her three sons…

Saturday, October 31st and Sunday November 1st, in Gruene, Texas, just North of New Braunfels, Texas. Weve posted a 8 minute video and tons of photos at http://sanantoniohams.org/blog. Here are the direct links to the blog entries for this event… (we’ve included the video in this blog entry already).

The 2009 Tour de Gruene was a big success, with more than 1,800 riders on the first morning’s ride (choice of 15, 30, or 50 mile course), and close to 300 in the afternoon’s individual time trial and Sunday morning’s team time trials. …

Howdy. We spent our last visit deep in the heart of Texas. We rode our bikes and talked about trails. We even tried our feet two steppin’ at the local honky-tonk bar. We loved Austin.
Traveling to the Hill Country of Texas was a first for both of us. And it is just like it sounds, hilly. Comprised of karst topography (ancient seabeds of limestone) the landscape is a paradise…

Tonight was my first evening ride since DST ended. Last night I was suffering from the “Post DST Blues” and skipped riding. I was determined to ride tonight and didn’t even bother to check the temperature which could have canceled the ride if the temperature is below 60 degrees. My trusty Raleigh M800 (1997 model) was fitted with two bright flashing LED taillights and my home brew front light with a strong blast of brightness out in front. Never mind that the battery for the front light weighs over 3#. I just think of the extra weight as a training bonus. Riding on trails and side streets I managed 13+ miles. My November goal is 229. I plan on riding Wednesday and Thursday in the dark with a daylight ride on Saturday and Sunday.

The ride is advertised as “covering a variety of Houston neighborhoods” and is “not recommended for beginners. Must have intermediate to advanced cycling skills and be able to maintain a minimum of 15 mph for 25 miles.” …

It’s about eight-miles from the top of the big hill on FM 306 to the finish line of the Tour de Gruene two-man time trial. The road is rough chip seal with a tiny shoulder, and totally exposed. The grade seems to go up, constantly. The wind comes from all sides.

“You know once you get on 306 if you’re having a good day, or not,” my friend Pat McCarty, a former Tour de Gruene champion, told me. …

An excerpt, “While the history was there, it’s doubtful that anyone would have picked Gruene, Texas as the start of Lance Armstrong’s historic comeback to professional road racing. Back in 1996 it was a very different story as Lance, who admittedly “barely could ride a bike” due to cancer treatments, rode with legendary Eddy Merckx in a ceremonial Time Trial circuit. Then in 1997 he rode with teammate Kevin Livingston notching a 2nd place result.”

The cycling community has been abuzz with excitement since officials announced that Austin’s Lance Armstrong had registered to ride in the two-day Tour de Gruene Bicycle Classic.

The Texas cycling legend is expected to compete today and Sunday in and around Gruene, near New Braunfels.

Cyclists lined up at Bike World in San Antonio on Thursday to pick up their racing numbers and T-shirts. They talked about the chance to compete with the seven-time Tour de France champion.

“It’s great for the area, great for the biking community, to have Lance come and ride with us,” said 50-year-old Chris Price, who was with his 8-year-old son, Liam.

Lance Armstrong’s cycling comeback will make a tour stop in Gruene this week.

Armstrong, a seven-time Tour de France winner, registered for the 25th annual Tour de Gruene Bicycle Classic and has signed up to compete in time trials on Saturday and Sunday.

“This is one of the only times people will see him race on American soil,” said Karen Rotzler, one of the Tour de Gruene’s founders. “You’d normally have to go to Italy to see him in a time trial.”

Armstrong, 37, registered online for the race on Friday. With his $30 registration fee, Armstrong also receives a T-shirt and a ticket to New Braunfels’ Wurstfest.
