Asheville, Austin and Boulder compete for hosting rights

Three cities have been selected as finalists to host the 2014 and 2015 USA Cycling Cyclo-cross National Championships according to USA Cycling on Wednesday. The three potential host cities are Asheville, North Carolina (Biltmore Estate), Austin, Texas (Zilker Park) and Boulder, Colorado (Valmont Bike Park).

With six bids under consideration, USA Cycling evaluated potential host cities using various criteria, including: accessibility, community support, …

Bart Yasso may be known as more of a runner than a cyclist, but this running idol says that “Riding my bike cross country is by far my favorite athletic achievement. I wasn’t out there trying to set any records. Just riding solo enjoying the natural beauty, diverse landscape and friendly people.”
I had the pleasure of meeting up with Bart while he was in Austin for The Running Event last week, and sat down with him to talk about cycling and his love for the Bike. He is a very kind, funny, and…

Texas highway officials on Wednesday said they will tweak bicycle and pedestrian routes around a massive Loop 610 North construction project to allow pedestrians and “experienced” bikers to pass through a heavily traveled intersection.

TxDOT spokeswoman Karen Othon’s comments came a day after highway officials met with hike and bike advocates who were angry with plans to close a mile-long segment of the White Oak Bayou Hike and Bike Trail for…

During my six-week bike ride last spring, I covered nearly 2,000 miles, most of it over land that hadn’t seen a drop of rain since the previous fall; some of those areas — mostly in Texas — still haven’t gotten significant precipitation. Farmers in Texas have had to plow their cotton under or slaughter their cattle. If the drought continues through the winter, power plants may have to start shutting down for want of cooling water.

Meanwhile, the Amtrak train that I was going to take home from Houston was canceled due to extensive flooding in the Upper Midwest. And back in Vermont, at the end of August, we saw whole towns cut off by flooding and washed-out bridges and roads from Tropical Storm Irene. An early snow storm in October caused power outages in…

Face it, flats happen when mountain biking. These Texas trails are covered in thorns, sharp rock, cacti and plenty else that will go straight through your tire and puncture the tube.

Today I have a quick tip on a way to prevent most of these flat tires and keep you riding. Watch this video first, and then answer the following question. Can your tire do this?…

Most cyclists (excluding cyclocross fanatics) have ended their competitive season by now and are doing base-period endurance rides and strength workouts.

Triathletes have retreated indoors to heated pools and spin classes, and local runners are taking advantage of the cooler weather as they prepare for the Resolution Run on Dec. 31.

People are looking ahead to identify the races they’ll…

Finally…
these are from the first lap. A few of these folks missed a turn (and got bonus raffle tickets) and unfortunately ventured on to trails we had closed. after a short (4.6? mile) lap #1, everyone else made the correct turns and turned 100′s of laps! I took a few butt shots to see how dirty people were getting (not because I’m a perv).

Rough count is 90% smiles. This really is my favorite local MTB event. Thank you to everyone that turned their CRANKS to help Austin Ridge Riders GIVE again this year. I’m hoping that Spinnincin will give us an update on how much we raised to donate to…

This saturday, December 10th, 9am we will be hosting a Brick Benefit for Tim Myers at Faulkner Park Trail Head. The run will take place on the trail and the cycle part will be on Loop 49. As most of you know Tim is recovering from serious injuries from being hit by a car while riding. He has had some additional complications and has not been able to go back to work. He needs our help in getting through this rough time and as a cycling community it would be nice to help one of our own.
The event is FREE but we are hoping the community of cyclists and triathletes will come out and help us help Tim through donations. If you have any questions, please contact Steve Farris at sffrun@aol.com or (903)539-9484.

Saturday, Feb 12, 2011 and it is a cold, clear day. Couple of weeks until the 67th anniversary of my day of birth. Dang, it’s colder than forecast, hoping it warms soon. Since I usually won’t be able to do that on the…

We started this last year to provide an training opportunity for teams involved the BikeMS:Frisco to Fort Worth event. Although there are a number of rally’s in the month of March and April, none are focused on preparation for this event. Surprisingly, especially…

Sticky, steamy heat gripping the Houston region in recent days is forecast to continue today and much of the week.

But scattered thunderstorms could give coastal areas a brief break from the searing triple-digit heat and parched conditions Thursday when a storm system sloshes ashore near New Orleans, possibly helping to spread rain showers toward the Houston area.

The heat index will be at least 105 degrees for the next few days. …

I did the 45 mile bike ride through the Texas Hill Country, from Wimberly down to Gruene this past Saturday and… I DIDN’T EVEN DIE! My survival, unlikely though it is, was in doubt as late as Sunday evening as I tottered about my house emitting soft little moans of muscle pain, but this morning I have apparently bounced back entirely and am ready to go riding again, though not quite so far so soon. …

I’ve written boatloads of articles over the years about PC tech, building PCs, hardware specs, benchmarks and other topics that PC enthusiasts (read: PC geeks) care about. Geeks obsess over details. How many shader cores? What’s the latency? Bandwidth between interconnects. And so it goes.

I’m also a fairly serious amateur photographer. I obsess over which lenses would be ideal, how fast they should be, ISO settings, which noise reduction app works best. I suppose you could call me a digital photo geek, but I’m a pale shade of some of the real pros out there.

Then there’s bicycles. …

With only about 10 days left on their trek from Austin, Tex., to Anchorage, the 53 cyclists who are taking part…

We got up at 5:30 this morning to hit the road at dawn so we could beat the high winds expected around noon. It also worked in our favor that we got out of town before most of the morning rush hour traffic came. A short time later we crossed the border into New Mexico and began riding through wine vineyards, onion and alfalfa fields, pecan tree farms all with the background of some new rugged mountain…

Pedal powered activities planned for May
Take your pick: Stuck in gridlock traffic in a car on MoPac Boulevard or zooming down the hike-and-bike trail, knocking out the daily workout on the way to the office?

Really, who wouldn’t rather pedal a bike to work?

We know, it’s not always possible. But whatever your excuse, there’s probably a way around it, at least some of the time.

Live too far away? Try a combination bike/bus commute, or drive part way…

The route that I am following is broken into 7 sections. Now that I entered Texas through El Paso I have completed sections 1 and 2. These 2 sections covers 934.5 miles. I am about 60 miles into Texas so the total mileage after 10 days is right around 1,000 miles. The bad news is that I have picked up a head cold today. We were planning on riding to Kent tomorrow and camping. The distance is well over 100 miles. I may have to bail…
