PLANO, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) – There’s a potential safety risk if you enjoy jogging, taking a walk, or riding a bike on paved trails.<\/p>\n

Traffic lights are supposed to protect you when those trails cross busy North Texas streets. But CBS 11 camera’s documented a threat to trail users at a popular crossing in Plano.<\/p>\n

Jerod Foster, associate professor at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas, prepares a meal for himself and 13 students Tuesday while camping at the Cowley State Lake. The group is making a 900-mile trip across the Great Plains as a special project. The students serve as a support group for Foster, who is making the journey on a bicycle, traveling the entire route on gravel roads.<\/p>\n

Riding a bicycle in Kansas through the intense July heat can be a challenge for any rider. Few people know that better than Jerod Foster, an associate professor at Texas Tech University in Lubbock.<\/p>\n

Foster is embarking on a 900-mile trip across the Great Plains as a college project. To make the expedition even more of a challenge, he will be riding on dirt roads the entire distance.<\/p>\n

Associate Professor Robert Peaslee said the journey began in Stillwater, Okla., and will end in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He said that Foster and the 13 students who are accompanying him reached the Arkansas City area on Tuesday and made camp at the Cowley State Lake.
