They kept putting it off: Life always seemed to get in the way.<\/p>\n<p>But when Merv Loya was diagnosed with early stage Alzheimer\u2019s disease, they decided to take advantage of a short window of opportunity for the trip of a lifetime.<\/p>\n<p>Merv was 75 years old when he joined his son on a 73-day journey along the TransAmerica Bicycle Trail, which runs more than 4,200 miles between Virginia and Oregon. He was killed while riding his bicycle due to a dangerously unfinished and inadequately marked section of the sidewalk.<\/p>\n<p>On the early evening of Oct. 15, 2020, Johnson was enjoying a bicycle ride along Almeda Parkway in Houston. He was wearing his helmet, headlamp, and customary Houston Rockets hat\u2014the team for which he worked since the 1994-1995 championship season.
