The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department took the iconic Buffalo Soldiers out of the history books and into Resaca de la Palma State Park on Saturday during the Iron Riders Christmas Dash. The 8-mile bike ride from Rancho Viejo to the park dropped participants off to an awaiting replica of a 1896 Buffalo Soldier encampment and the park’s holiday celebration. …
Dozens of people are getting free refurbished bikes courtesy of Dallas County inmates

Dallas County inmate Eliza Zabaleta gushes when Roy Love, a detention services officer, places a small pink bicycle over a repair stand. Disney princesses adorn the frame, which reads “Magnificent Beauty†in capital letters.
“Aw!†says Zabaleta, picturing her little niece one day riding a bike like this one. “This is cute.â€
The pink handlebars are faded, and the tires with heart-shaped grooves look more gray than the original white. Zabaleta — who was jailed in July on an unauthorized use of a motor vehicle charge — studies the bike and starts her work, spraying the body with a cleaning solution and scrubbing it until it shines. …

Day 15, Lost Maples Campground to Johnson City, TX: Lots of rolling hills all day.
Saturday December 22, 2018, 128 miles (206 km) – Total so far: 1,623 miles (2,612 km)
The deer in Texas are crazy. I am seeing a carcass at least one per mile and twice this evening they tried to crash into me. The first deer assassination attempt was a group of 6 of 7 deer. Some of them ran behind me and two were right in front of me. I believe the brakes, solid red taillights, and headlight that doesn’t shine upward saved me from a hit. The second time was a single deer. Texas needs more hunters!
It was very warm today 80°F! High clouds …

Sunday December 23, 2018, 107 miles (172 km) – Total so far: 1,730 miles (2,784 km)
Today was a good day for a bike ride! The wind shifted directions and was blowing from the north so I didn’t have a tailwind for most of the riding today. The first 3 hours of riding we’re difficult because I pushed to hard yesterday – the legs felt like Jello. I saw my first Armadillo but it was flat and not especially photogenic.
I was able to meet up with Dwayne from home in …
