About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Craddock’s Tour de France fight continues to benefit Houston velodrome

www.cyclingnews.com

When Lawson Craddock crashed on the opening stage of the Tour de France, soldiered to the finish alone and then found out he had a fractured scapula in addition to his cut up eyebrow, he could have dropped out. Instead, the EF Education First-Drapac rider hatched a plan to add to his effort to raise money for his home velodrome in Houston.

The Alkek velodrome, where Craddock got his start in bike racing, was badly damaged in 2017’s hurricane Harvey, and even before the Tour, he announced he would auction off a pair of custom shoes with the idea of raising a few hundred dollars to help repair the venue. …

Cyclists Raise Enough Money to Save Frisco Velodrome

By Meredith Yeomans | www.nbcdfw.com

Cycling is a huge sport in North Texas.

So it was disappointing when it was announced in December that the only outdoor track in the area was coming down.

The Frisco Superdrome, located on the campus of Collin College, seemed doomed.

But an unexpected, final-hour twist has saved the track. …

Ordinary July Bike Ride to Huffman

Texbiker.net Posted on July 12, 2018 by Rick AnkrumJuly 12, 2018

Nothing out of the ordinary on today’s bike ride. I left at 11:20 am biking the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman Extended” route for 35.44 miles. This puts the week at 146.48 miles and July at 362.9 miles. I chose this route to go a couple of miles more than the regular “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route. I watched stage 6 of the TdF before setting off.

Weather during the bike ride: start 90 (63% humidity), partly cloudy, wind SW 7 mph. Finish 92 (50% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind S 7 mph. It seems cooler than usual for July. By now I think we should be seeing some upper 90’s if not 100 degrees but I am not complaining.

The usual rest stop came at the Huffman Chevron where I ate a Clif Bar and drank some cold water while cooling down in the shade. I was there over 20 minutes because I had to restart the PowerPod when I left. The ride summary up to that point.

Wahoo Ride Summary Huffman Chevron

Leaving the Chevron I rode north on FM 2100. This took me past a building under construction that will have a Huddle House restaurant when it opens. I don’t know of another one in the Houston area.

The ride back to Kingwood  was a bout 12 miles from the Chevron and I finished the ride at 2:25 pm.

Friday weather looks inviting for a bike ride.

1.5-mile expansion of A-train Rail Trail expected to open late summer

By Zaira Perez | www.dentonrc.com

The Texas Department of Transportation and the Denton County Transportation Authority aim to expand a current pedestrian trail alongside Interstate 35E by opening another 1 1/2 miles of trail later this summer, said Ryan Lafontaine, a spokesman at TxDOT. …

Trail Design and Construction Underway – Houston Bayou

buffalobayou.org
Design of important trails in the downtown area is underway. Extending from Fannin Street all the way to McKee Street on the south bank of Buffalo Bayou, there are three separate projects being coordinated by BBP and the Houston Parks Board. The western most trail will be constructed in the lower floors of two Harris County buildings and on a property owned by Harris County Flood Control District. This portion will link up with a trail segment on what is now a parking lot at the corner of Austin and Commerce streets. From here, the trail alignment heads east where it will be constructed on property owned by CenterPoint Energy. It is expected that this trail will be completed by the end of the year, with the other two segments constructed in 2020.

East of downtown and US 59/69, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) recently broke ground on a trail that extends across the Houston Housing Authority’s Clayton Homes property. The $3.7 million project is a key missing link that will tie the trails described above to existing trails east all the way to Lockwood Drive. In addition to the trail, the project includes a pedestrian bridge that will link the north and south banks of Buffalo Bayou. A federal grant and $500,000 in private funds raised by BBP are making the project possible. Expect a ribbon cutting in early 2019.

Fun in the Sun Poolside Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on July 11, 2018 by Rick AnkrumJuly 11, 2018

I wasn’t the only person out enjoying the sun and heat. When I biked through Roman Forest today I stopped at the pool and took these photos.

Bike Ride Roman Forest-1

Bike Ride Roman Forest-2

I bicycled the “New Caney – Roman Forest – Valley Ranch” route today with wheels down at 11:17 am. I wanted to ride at least 40 miles and actually biked 41.22 miles moving July to 327.46 miles, leaving 472.5 miles to reach my goal for July.

Weather during the bike ride: start 87 (71% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind 7 mph. Finish 92 (54% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind W 9 mph. The wind wasn’t much a factor in the ride enabling me to keep a steady pace no matter the direction.

I took a short side trip from the usual to go by the house we used to live in up to 1990 to see how it looks. It looks different with a concrete driveway (ours was rock) and a carport which we didn’t have. The street looks different too with houses on both sides all the way from the railroad track to the curve just east of the old house.

Back on the route the ride moved along and I entered Tavola to get to Roman Forest Blvd. to bike into Roman Forest. Traffic was light and the roads good. Construction on the south side of Roman Forest Blvd. before Peach Creek bridge will someday increase the cars. Even in Roman Forest several concrete trucks passed me meaning some type of construction is going on.

Cycling west on Roman Forest Blvd. to get back to I-69/US59 I stopped at the Shell station for ice and water. This would carry me to the Circle K/Valero on Northpark Drive where I took a 10 minute break to eat a Clif bar and drink cold water. Then I was back on the bike to finish the ride. The Wahoo ride summary up to the rest stop.

Wahoo Ride Summary Valero Northpark Dr

From there it was about 7 miles to the finish going through Kings Manor and into Kingwood. I pushed the Wahoo Elemnt stop button at 2:42 pm.

Thursday weather looks bike ride friendly and I plan on taking advantage of it.
