About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Earlier Start, Groups of Cyclists, June’s Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 30, 2018 by Rick AnkrumJune 30, 2018

Last bike ride for June. I got an early start (by my alarm clock anyway) with wheels rolling at 8:40 am. The intent was to see other cyclists as they returned while I rode the “Atascocita – Huffman – Walden” route. I purposely chose this route to put me on FM 1960, Fairlake Drive and Old Atascocita Road earlier than if I rode through Walden first. It paid off with close to 30 cyclists passing me in the opposite direction. The first one came on Atascocita Shores Drive before I got to FM 1960. From there the number picked up.

I missed taking photos of the bikers on the causeway because they came faster than I could get my phone out and were on the other side of the road with traffic between us. There would have been a great spot to take more photos if I had waited a couple of minutes after turning onto Fairlake Drive from FM 1960 but they were too fast for me to get my phone out again.

Weather during the ride: start 82 (86% humidity), a few clouds, wind S 5 mph. Finish 90 (59% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind S 12 mph. Starting earlier kept the temperature down some but the humidity up until the sun got higher in the sky.

Legs felt good during the ride and watts output was not overly high to maintain 15 to 18 mph once I was clear of all of the stops and starts. I got the overall average speed up to 14.1 mph biking west on FM 1960 from Huffman and was able to keep it there up I got back into Kingwood.

PowerPod issues appear to be in the past. I am going to connect it to the iBike Issac software this afternoon to see what the data looks like and maybe tweak the profile some. I like to tinker with things which sometimes get me in trouble.

One stop to refill my water bottle on the return to FM 1960 at Atascocita Shores Drive at the Chevron station. No stop at the Huffman Chevron. One last biker followed me riding west over Lake Houston until we split at the Chevron station, he went north and I went south.

I finished at 11:14 am, earlier than some of my rides begin.

Watts Formula Divergence Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 29, 2018 by Rick AnkrumJune 29, 2018

I put together a slightly different bike ride route along familiar streets but not one that I rode before: “Atascocita South – Walden – E Lake Houston Parkway”. Distance came to 29.6 miles. Start time: 10:34 am, finished at 12:47 pm. Weather during the ride: start 89 (66% humidity), partly cloudy, wind S 12 mph, gusts 17 mph. Finish 93 (59% humidity), partly cloudy, wind SW 8 mph. good thing I finished then because not long after I was home I got an extreme heat weather alert text message from the City of Houston which could last until 7 pm.

One other cyclist cross my path in Walden, a woman riding her mountain bike. We exchanged hello as we passed riding opposite directions.

PowerPod continues to work as expected though I am disappointed I don’t put out 400+ watts all the time. Oh, maybe being 3 times as old as most pro racers has something to do with it. Interesting how each website calculates the average and max watts from the same data. MY Elemnt computer shows 83 watts avg, 321 watts max, Strava 58 watts average, 319 watts max, and RideWithGPS has 86 watts average and 319 watts max.

One more biking day in June and the weather looks good. Maybe I can start before 8 am?

Importance Of Bike Safety

BikeHouston.org

Bicycle safety education is not often taken seriously in many car-centric urban areas, Houston is no exception. Currently, more people are looking for alternate options for efficient, safe, and cost-effective ways to move about. There are still viable low costs options for “people moving” that are fun, healthy, and safe given appropriate education and infrastructure. Bicycling is one such …
