About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

PowerPod Back, Gadgets Rule Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 26, 2018 by Rick AnkrumJune 26, 2018

Bike gadgets can be helpful or a big distraction while riding. The last three bike rides the PowerPod fell into the distraction category sad to say. But on today’s bike ride whatever I did fix the problem and it is no longer a distraction though I watched it more than usual to be sure it was working properly. After running through the calibration at the beginning of the ride the PowerPod reported watts but they were lower than my past numbers. When I stopped at the Mobil station in New Caney for ice and water I adjusted the tilt a little and the watts looked more like past rides. I installed an app on my phone from Velocomp titled Power House which may have helped getting the PowerPod talking with the Elemnt computer. I used it to tweak the “profile” settings in the PowerPod, I think.

Thinking back to one of the first gadgets I bought for a bike it was an odometer that had no electronics (this was 1979) but attached to the front fork and a thing rotated each time the wheel turned advancing the numbers that showed trough a little window on top of the odometer which were big enough to read while I rode. That was on a Huffy that I bought at Woolco in Humble, TX. When I graduated to a Schwinn a year or so later I bought one of the early electronic bike computers. And the gadget craze began. They are great when they work but a major pain when they don’t.

I set out on today’s bike ride at 10:04 am on the “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route and biked 34.18 miles. This improved June total to 741.66 miles leaving 58.34 miles to reach June’s goal of 800 miles. Looks like I can do that if the weather cooperates. Unlike yesterday no rain during the ride. Weather during the bike ride: start 85 (77% humidity), a few clouds, wind SW 5 mph. Finish 92 (56% humidity), partly cloudy, wind S 8 mph.

Until I made the adjustment to the PowerPod tilt the watts reported bicycling to Tavola looked like I was almost coasting though I was really pedaling. There aren’t many hills to test my output but the incline going up to Community Drive at SH 99 (Grand Parkway) just got over 100 where on previous rides sometimes I saw 200+.

The only stop was at the Mobil station except for traffic lights and stop signs which got back home by 12:42 pm making the riding time 2:30:32. Overall time came in at 2:38:12.

In El Paso, A Battle Over Development Is Simmering

www.texasstandard.org

Opponents also say the rugged desert terrain with its wide arroyos will just be too difficult to develop. But supporters of the plan say part of the trail system is on city-owned land, and right now, it’s considered vacant.

With its location in the far west corner of Texas in the Chihuahua Desert, El Paso often doesn’t get the same attention as other major Texas cities. But the city of El Paso is trying to change that. It’s building new developments and arenas to attract more companies, tourists and young professionals. …

Hot, Humid, Rain, PowerPod Problem Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 25, 2018 by Rick AnkrumJune 25, 2018

When I began today’s bike ride at 9:56 am I didn’t expect rain but as I got closer to the eastern most part of the “Stroker Road – Huffman” route I stopped and took these photos of what looked like rain farther to the east.

The temperature went down a few degrees but the wind didn’t let up as I made the right turn onto Ramsey Road. I battled the wind all the way to Stroker Road where another right turn put the wind at my left rear quarter and stopped trying to slow me down. I heard some thunder coming from I just rode from and thought the rain moved away. Once I was back to FM 2100 another right turn kept the tailwind but I stopped at the Shell station to refill my water bottle. Back on FM 2100 I felt a light drizzle sometimes as I made my way to Huffman and the Chevron station. At the railroad tracks I again turned right to make a u-turn heading west on FM 1960 and noticed the pavement was damp. Strangely it stopped as I crossed FM 2100 and pulled into the Chevron station. The Wahoo ride summary up to then.

Wahoo Summary Huffman Chevron

After sitting down on the milk crate I got my phone out to look up some help for the PowerPod which was not sending power data to the Elemnt computer. All it did was flash the LED red and then green. I didn’t find anything to help but I tried several things. Not good and the PowerPod kept flashing. Later at home I called VeloComp and the man there said the unit was in the second stage of calibrating and if I used the Isaac Software I should be able to fix it. I did that at home and the flashing stopped but I am not too sure the problem went away.

Back at the Chevron station as I sat cooling off and eating a couple of granola bars I heard several rounds of thunder to the west and sky was dark. I decided to not be in a hurry to leave to give the rain or storm time to leave. After the thunder seemed to stop and the clouds moved south I set out riding west on FM 1960. The road was dry and the wind friendly all the way to Atascocita Shores Drive where the right turn put me on the way to W. Lake Houston Parkway. In about 1/2 a mile the street starting getting wet and a few rain drops starting coming down. By the time I got to the pool and tennis courts it rained a little harder and I stopped at the pool house to get under the overhang. Not long after that it rained much harder and I waiting until it stopped. I still heard thunder to the west and south as I rode west continuing onto W. Lake Houston Parkway. The streets were very wet with puddles from there all the way home. With my jersey soaked and the temperature much lower I got chilled. Hard to do in June!

At Town Center Park I stopped in a dry spot and messed with the PowerPod again but nothing changed. Back on the Canyon to finish the bike ride at 2:04 pm very soaked from the rain and sweat. I washed the Canyon and put it away while a few more rain drops fell. Maybe Tuesday will be dry.
