About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Kingwood – Splendora – Kingwood Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 22, 2018 by Rick AnkrumJune 22, 2018

Today’s bike ride followed my “Kingwood – Splendora – Kingwood” route for a total of 42.68 miles. The rain has left the building but the humidity it left behind was almost as bad. I rolled out the driveway at 10:18 am and the first couple of miles were not too moist but once I warmed up the sweat started to soak my jersey and shorts. After making my way out of Kingwood and into Woodridge Forest to get to I-69/US59 the trip to Splendora went smoothly with the help of a tailwind. My average speed moved from 13 mph when I got on the service road to 14.8 mph when I made the u-turn back to the south. I knew the headwind would not be friendly but it wasn’t as bad as I expected.

Weather during the bike ride: start 86 (81% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind SW 10 mph. Finish 92 (61% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind W 6 mph.

Last time I biked this route I had a dog sprint on the south bound service road at the junk yard north of SH 242. Today I sped up as I passed the open gate but no dogs ran out today. I didn’t miss them.

Biking south to Valley Ranch Parkway I stopped at the Mobil station in New Caney at FM 1485 to refill my water bottle. Leaving the station the ride to Valley Ranch had places where the wind was blocked helping me along. On Valley Ranch Parkway I looped back to the service road to continue south. Once I crossed FM 1314 the trees on the right blocked the wind some. Another loop through Oakhurst added a couple of miles to the route and back to the service road.

Arriving at the Circle K store on Northpark Drive I took a rest break to eat some fig Newtons, granola bars and drink water. This is the a screenshot of the ride up to that point.

Circle K Rest Stop Ride Summary

I was back on the bike at 1:25 pm to get to the finish about 7 miles away. Sitting in the shade felt good and allowed my legs to recover some. It wasn’t too far to the Kingwood Drive u-turn under I-69/US59 which positioned me for the entry back into Kingwood through Kings Manor. I finished the bike ride at 1:57 pm with my jersey and shorts dripping. Maybe the humidity will let up as the ground dries from the rain.

I am at 606.74 miles for June leaving 194 miles to reach my goal. If the rain cooperates I think I can do it. Saturday’s forecast shows typical June weather so I plan on biking.

This Is How You Make Dallas Bike Friendly

By Alex Macon | www.dmagazine.com

You start by giving everyone a bike. Groups like Bike Friendly South Dallas prove just how much we need earn-a-bike programs.

The thousands of dockless rental bikes that rolled onto the streets of Dallas this last year have proven just how far the city has to go to become truly bike friendly. And not just in terms of infrastructure, although 19 miles of buffered bike lanes in the entire city don’t come close to cutting it. …

By Partha S. Chatterjee | www.indoamerican-news.com

HOUSTON: Somen Debnath, the humanist, is on a World Bicycle Tour for HIV/AIDS awareness and to bring exposure to the rich heritage of Indian culture. He has just started his United States tour, entering Texas from Mexico. Favorite Bayou to ride on?

byu/gerunk | www.reddit.com

My personal fav. is White Oak. Nothing beats the flowing trails with hardly any crossings, and they’re maintained really well too.

Only issue is I literally live across the city from it so it’s about 10 miles to get to it, so if I wanna do the whole trail it’s about a 50 mile round trip.

What’s your favorite Bayou trail or simply a little segment of bayou trail that you like a lot? …

Harlingen could add 6.2-mile mountain bike trail

By RICK KELLEY | www.valleymorningstar.com

HARLINGEN — Some avid bicyclists have taken the initiative to bring a possible mountain bike riding trail to the city’s park system at a cost they say will be practically free.

The proposed 6.2-mile trail would be carved out of the 23.4-acre tract donated to the city 18 months ago by Harlingen resident Maxine Pace Elkins.

Group members paced off a loop-to-loop track through …

Large Yard Message Letters Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 20, 2018 by Rick AnkrumJune 20, 2018

Back on the bike today after some early morning rain. The rain kind of moved to the west though some dark clouds hung around in the distance. After waiting for the streets to dry off I rolled out at 12:41 pm to bike the “Atascocita – Walden – E. Lake Houston Parkway” route bicycling 29.41 miles. When I got up I was very optimistic about biking today. This is a bonus day since on Monday I figured no biking until Friday.

Weather during the bike ride: start 86 (75% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind SE 13 mph. Finish 86 (76% humidity), overcast, wind SE 16 mph. With all of the rain the humidity was thick enough you could almost cut it with a knife. Sweating didn’t do much to cool me down but my jersey must’ve held a couple of quarts of moisture by the end of the ride.

A couple of times I felt a few rain drops but they or me moved out of range.

While biking south on Pinehurst Trail I passed a house at one of the side streets with the large message letters in the front yard. The message: “Happy 65th Anniversary, Mom & Dad”. How nice that they were remembered.

On the return leg to Kingwood the streets were damp from rain before I got there but I still avoided the rain. Finished bicycling at 2:53 pm.

Yesterday since I could ride due to rain I lubricated the chain on the Canyon with No. 5 Chain-L oil. Strange name but the oil sticks to the chain. The chain was quiet now after squeaking and showing some rust after riding in the rain on Monday.

Next biking day will be Friday, weather permitting. According to the forecast we should be back to hot and dry June.
