About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

I’ll Take Some Gravel With That Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 16, 2018 by Rick AnkrumJune 16, 2018

Today’s bike ride may be the last one until Tuesday or Wednesday as rain is supposed to arrive on Sunday. I chose the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route and biked 31.67 miles to boost the week to 214.77 miles and June to 516.37 miles, 65% of the way to my 800 mile goal. This is the third week in a roll over 200 miles and seven out of the last eight weeks over 200 miles.

With a mid-morning start (9:45 am) I didn’t expect to see other cyclists but I saw 6 other cyclists along the route, most on or south of FM 1960 around Lake Houston.

Weather during the bike ride: start 83 (72% humidity), partly cloudy, wind S 12 mph. Finish 94 (45% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind S 7 mph. The wind made it feel cooler whenever I rode in shade.

While the wind wasn’t too strong I decided to take a rest break at the Huffman Chevron to eat a couple of granola bars and drink ice water. I stayed about 26 minutes before resuming the ride. Riding to the west the tailwind helped me along. While I was resting I thought I saw some dark clouds to the west but by the time I got back on the bike they no longer were there.

Traffic was not too heavy for a Saturday. My wife thought it was a good idea that I rode the Spring Creek Greenway on Friday rather than today because more people might be there today. I hadn’t thought of that.

Not planned for the ride but I rode on gravel (about 6 feet of it) while going north on the greenbelt trail along W. Lake Houston Parkway. Construction on a building along the trail caused them to remove park of the concrete for equipment to get in and the gravel fills in the void until they are finished. The Canyon bike handled it easily.

I finished the bike ride at 12:34 pm, early for my rides.

Sunday and Monday weather forecasts call for rain. If it happens no biking.

Spring Creek Greenway Revisited Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 15, 2018 by Rick AnkrumJune 15, 2018

I revisited the Spring Creek Greenway on today’s bike ride. Starting out at 9:50 am the weather had heated up yet. Biking through Kingwood to Forest Cove and Hamblen Road brought me to the pedestrian/bike bridge to cross the San Jacinto River and enter the greenway trail head. One nice advantage of the greenway is the abundant trees and the shade they provide over the route. I estimate 60% of the ride had shade which helps to combat the summer heat.

Weather during the bike ride: start 87 (67% humidity), partly cloudy, wind S 7 mph. Finish 92 (55% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind SE 18 mph. On the return leg from the western termination I come to some places where the road surface was damp from a light rain before I arrived. I did get a few sprinkles as I got close to Jesse Jones Park riding east. That probably explains the wind speed jumping from 7 mph to 18 mph. I could see some darker clouds but none directly overhead.

With my previous experience on the greenway I planned water stops better. Instead of running out of water I refilled at Jesse Jones Park before continuing to the west, refilled at Dennis Johnson Park after biking to greenway termination instead of before, stopped at a park to rest and drank from the water fountain though it wasn’t cold water, and refilled again at Jesse Jones Park before bicycling to the I-69/US59 entrance/exit. This took me at the way home with water left. The Wahoo ride summary screenshot shows the ride when I stopped at the park for a rest break and drank from the cool water fountain.

Wahoo Ride Summary Stop at Park

While I sat at a picnic bench beside the greenway I ate some strawberry Newton cookies and drank water. When other cyclists passed I took there picture.

These were just a few of the other bikers, walkers and joggers out on the greenway. I did not see any constables patrolling.

Riding speed was better this time using the Canyon bike over the Blue Norcorss AL bike. There is a 15 mph speed limit except for places where horses cross the trail where it drops to 10 mph. I rode around 14 mph sometimes going higher on downhills and slower on the uphills.

I biked 42.39 miles today which is a couple miles less than my previous trip because I didn’t get lost today. There are couple of places where the greenway could use more signage. One intersection offers four choices without a hint of which one is correct. I chose one based on the horse warning sign. I did see some horses beside the greenway today but not on it.

I took a rest break at Jesse Jones Park before riding back to I-69/US59 to get some water, eat a couple of granola bars and give the rain clouds time to move out. At times it sounded like rain hitting the leaves on the trees but it could have been the wind rustling them too. This time I found the correct entrance to the trail in the far end of the parking lot rather than riding a rectangle side trail and then coming to the greenway at a bridge with a deer stand on the ground.

Biking back to I-69/US59 I stopped and took these photos.

With today’s bike ride the Canyon Endurace CF SLX has 3008 miles under its tires. I am at 183.1 miles for the week, 484.7 miles for the month and 3387 miles YTD.

Finished the bike ride at 1:48 pm. Riding time was 3:14:59.

Saturday weather is when the rain stuff gets closer but I plan on biking before it gets to be a problem.
