About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Ofo’s Dockless Bikes Hit Austin Streets

www.americaninno.com

Bird and Lime might have been first with dockless scooters in Austin. But Ofo, the Chinese dockless bike company, was the first ever to scale up a stationless-bikes business.

Now, Ofo’s yellow bikes are hitting Austin streets after getting permits to rent 500 bikes from the city. They appear to be the second dockless bike company to get permits — the first was Pace back in late May. Zagster, Spin and JUMP have also shown interest, but …

Flag Day, Cars Crash and a Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 14, 2018 by Rick AnkrumJune 14, 2018

Starting at 9:15 am (early for me) I enjoyed the coolness as I rode on the greenbelt trail for about half a mile before emerging onto the streets where the sun made it a little warmer. While starting early felt cooler I noticed the higher humidity quickly but it didn’t take long for that to go down while my sweating went up. The weather while I biked: start 87 (69% humidity), partly cloudy, wind SW 8 mph. Finish 92 (53% humidity), partly cloudy, wind calm.

Due to an appointment this afternoon I rode the shorter “Atascocita – Walden – E. Lake Houston Parkway” route for a total of 28.14 miles, moving the week total to 140.7 miles and June to 442.3 miles, 55% of the way to June’s 800 mile goal.

I didn’t expect anything out of the ordinary but when I arrived at the Chevron station on FM 1960 at Atascocita Shores Drive tow trucks were in abundance with several Harris County Sheriff cars. Not long after the Atascocita Fire Department pulled and when I came back outside after filling my water bottle an ambulance got there. Photos:

Traffic was a mess as people made their way around the wreck scene. It appeared two cars came together with one on the back of the white tow truck above and the other to the left of the sheriff’s car in the first photo. I got on the Canyon and exited onto Atascocita Shores Drive to go east on FM 1960 over Lake Houston. When I returned all of the emergency vehicles were gone and you would never know the crash happened.

Today is Flag Day and the United States flag was on display in front of many homes and businesses. Several photos during the ride. The house I expected to see many flags displayed did not have any though.

I finished the ride at 11:27 am within my allotted time so not to be late for the afternoon appointment.

More hot and dry weather on Friday for bicycling. Sunday and Monday look to be wet.

Cell Phone Charging Cables No Help Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 13, 2018 by Rick AnkrumJune 13, 2018

After working on our lawn sprinkler system for two days I wasn’t sure how much energy I had left for today’s bike ride. Starting out at 10:29 am my legs turned the pedals without too much effort but the streets were level and the wind friendly. I decided on the “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route rather than longer one I thought of earlier in the week before lawn sprinkler repairs. The bike ride totaled 34.18 miles moving the week to 112.57 miles and June to 414.16 miles, 52% of my 800 mile goal for June.

Not too far into the bike ride I stopped and took these photos of the greenbelt trail in Elm Grove Village in Kingwood. The shade was nice.

Bike Ride Elm Grove Trail

Bike Ride Elm Grove Trail-2

Same spot from different angles. To the left of the concrete trail beyond the trees and brush are two apartment complexes. After the brief stop I rode back to the streets to head out of Kingwood through Sherwood Trails and Woodridge Forest.

Once I biked to I-69/US59 the route went north and the friendly wind helped my low energy legs all the way to Tavola. After riding through Tavola I stopped at the Shell station on Roman Forest Blvd. to refill my water bottle with ice and water. It was hot and the shade was inviting but I got back on the Canyon and rode west to I-69/US59 to begin the ride back to Kingwood. The wind wasn’t as bad as I thought it might be and maintaining 16 to 18 mph wasn’t too hard on the legs. Winding through Valley Ranch to FM 1314 stopping at Stripes was mandatory for a rest break. The wind was putting resistance in my way and I needed to cool down, eat a couple of granola bars with ice water. The Wahoo Elemnt summary when I stopped.

 Wahoo Ride Summary Stripes FM1314

Arriving at Stripes at 12:18 pm I stayed about 25 minutes. Walking back to the store I refilled the water bottle to carry with for the 11+ miles remaining.

Weather during the bike ride: start 90 (59% humidity), partly cloudy, wind S 12 mph. Finish 95 (45% humidity), partly cloudy, wind S 6 mph.

Recently on bike rides I am seeing many phone charging cables laying on the shoulder. In various conditions from traffic running over them I wonder why these go out the window and wind up there. I estimate the rate of phone cables to road kill armadillos to be 15 cables for every 1 armadillo. Good for the cable makers. I thought about stopping to examine the better looking cables to see if they could be used but haven’t so far. On Monday’s ride I think I saw close to 10 cables. Sadly these cables couldn’t charge my legs up with more energy.

Finishing the bike ride at 1:38 pm my legs were glad so now they can rest. No sprinkler repairs, system is working and the new Netro controller did its job watering this morning. All sprinkler heads appear to have done their job.

More hot and dry weather on Thursday for biking. I plan on starting earlier though.
