About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Lumber, Concrete, New Homes and Waterpark Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 8, 2018 by Rick AnkrumJune 8, 2018

Today’s bike ride was on the “Kingwood – SH 242 – Kingwood” route. I rode 34.35 miles boosting the week to 175.49 miles and the month to 268.76 miles. The bike ride started at 10:53 am, about 10 minutes earlier than yesterday. The weather during while cycling: start 90 (58% humidity), partly cloudy, wind 6 mph. Finish 95 (39% humidity), partly cloudy, wind S 5 mph. It was a hot ride and I stopped twice to refill my water bottle.

This route goes through Woodridge Forest a newly developed subdivision. Today while riding there I stopped and took these photos. New home construction is underway and these are a few of them.

Going north the pedaling wasn’t too hard and I made good time to SH 242 without any stops except for traffic lights and stop signs. It has been a couple of week since I checked on the Grand Texas waterpark which is scheduled to open later this month. A couple of photos from SH 242 show some of the buildings and slides.

While I was taking these several trucks and cars moved from the work site to SH 242 on what appeared to a dirt road. Also I don’t see parking lots from this angle. This could make things interesting because they may not be in place by the end of June. The increase in traffic on SH 242 will make biking more difficult although this is on the east end of SH 242 and it is possible to bypass this area.

Biking south I expected the light wind to make it harder than the trip to SH 242 but it wasn’t too hard. I stopped at the Mobil station at FM 1485 and I-69/US59 for ice and water but I didn’t stay long. I was saving the rest stop for the Valero/Circle K station at Northpark Drive. During the ride to the Valero my average speed was 15 to 16 mph which increased my overall average speed to 14.2 mph.

By the time I got to the Valero I really needed a rest break. I brought some strawberry Newton cookies with me expecting them to refill my energy. I got water and ice, sat on the bottle water rack outside and slowly ate and drank. The shade and sometime light breeze helped to revive me. A screenshot of the Elemnt tracking while I was at the Valero.

Wahoo Valero Northpark Break

I think I stayed there for 20 to 25 minutes. This was about 7 miles from the finish. Back on the bike I rode south to Kingwood Drive, made the u-turn and began winding through Kings Manor and then into Kingwood. Around the 31 mile point my legs said they were going to slow down because the energy wasn’t there anymore. Overall average speed was 14.1 mph at that point but it starting dropping and ended up at 13.7 mph when I finished at 2:00 pm. The heat took a toll. I need to start earlier in the day.

Saturday I will try to start earlier and the weather looks to be a repeat of today.

Bike Share Regulations Are Coming — Finally

STEPHEN YOUNG | www.dallasobserver.com

It looks like Dallas’ bike-share regulations are going to get in just under the wire before the City Council’s July recess. The council agreed Wednesday to a June 27 vote on the rules the city will impose on the bike companies that have been operating in the city without regulation since last fall.

While the final details of the …

How many of you have said, “oh ‘H E double hockey sticks’ NO” will I ride a bicycle on Houston roadways? I get it. You feel unsafe. Low Watts, Acceptable Heart Rate, Tired Legs Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 7, 2018 by Rick AnkrumJune 7, 2018

I think biking 11 days in a row is taking a toll on my power output. Today’s bike ride on the “Atascocita South – Walden – Huffman” route was tough on my legs. I couldn’t get my speed above 16 mph for any length of time. Granted the first 10 miles of the ride didn’t have many stretches of riding without stops or near stops for traffic lights and stop signs. Once I got south of FM 1960 the number of stops dropped down and I was able to improve my average speed from 13 mph to 13.5 mph. It took crossing Lake Houston on FM 1960 a long stretch of not stopping to get to 13.9 mph. According to my Elemnt computer my max watts was 378 and average was 106. Heart rate average was 127 and max was 149. Considering my age I think the heart rate is not too bad. In the past I have had my power average in the 120 to 140 range so 106 is not so good. The wind was 9 mph from the SE which caused me to work hard but wind is a fact of bicycling. I am planning on not biking Sunday for a rest day. Maybe that will help some.

The weather during today’s bike ride: start 89 (68% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind S 8 mph. Finish 94 (44% humidity), partly cloudy, wind SE 9 mph. Start time was 11:02 am, about 40 minutes earlier than yesterday. With the mostly cloudy sky the heat didn’t feel so intense but by the time I stopped in Huffman at the Chevron station the clouds thinned out some and the heat increased. I took extra time for the rest stop to allow my legs some recovery, drink cold water and eat a couple of granola bars. This was about 22.7 miles into what turned out to be a 34.61 mile long ride. The extra rest time helped my legs and cycling west on FM 1960 to Pinehurst Trail was at a higher pace. This bumped my average speed to 14.0 mph.

Anticipating a tailwind once I turned right onto Pinehurst Trail I was able to maintain a 15 to 16 mph speed with not quite as much effort riding other directions. But once I was on W. Lake Houston Parkway bicycling north the moving traffic helped too. Turning left into Kingwood Greens my speed dropped down because my legs were tired and rode at 13 to 14 mph until the ride finished at 2:13 pm.

As of today: 141.13 miles for the week, 234.42 miles for June, and 3136 miles year to date.
