About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Doughnut Powered for 9 Miles Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 4, 2018 by Rick AnkrumJune 4, 2018

After last night’s wind storm and .02″ of rain the weather was sightly cooler for today’s bike ride. I started the bike ride at 10:15 am cycling the “New Caney – Roman Forest – Valley Ranch” route. All along the route I saw debris from the wind and a couple of trees toppled over, one onto the street in Kingwood on Chestnut Ridge Drive. In Roman Forest a couple of city workers were pulling a tree limb out of the ditch. Later I saw them hauling it in the bucket on front of the tractor. The wind and rain appeared suddenly last night while my wife and I were watching the Houston Astros. The electricity went out a couple of times like it did last Sunday when we were watching the Astros.

The weather during the bike ride: start 84 (71% humidity), overcast, wind calm. Finish 92 (51% humidity), overcast, wind 6 mph.

With the light to calm wind pedaling wasn’t too hard but my legs had trouble keeping the speed above 17 mph. I averaged 14.1 to 14.0 mph for most of the ride until I got back into Kingwood. Around 38.4 miles the average starting dropping and by the 1:43 pm finish I was at 13.8 mph. I usually think of my average speed being whatever it is before I get back to Kingwood where it is stop and go.

After riding past the schools in Briar Tree (school is out) my wife passed going the opposite direction. She stopped and and circled back. She had been to get her hair cut and had a doughnut to spare. She gave it to me and I told her I was going to stop at the Oakhurst park and pool for a rest break. I needed the sugar from the doughnut to power me home. I took these photos at the park.

After resting long enough to eat the doughnut and drink some water I was back on the bike to finish the bike ride. The rest of the ride was about 9 miles long. I made a quick stop at the Shell station on Kingwood Drive at Chestnut Ridge for ice and water to get me home. I don’t usually stop there. The attendant was friendly. I did notice the water had a antibacterial soap taste though. Maybe I should’ve settled for ice only.

More hot June weather tomorrow for biking.

The Trailist: Lose Yourself On Leon Creek’s Mountain Bike Trails

BRENDAN GIBBONS | therivardreport.com

I thought the left turn might be a bad idea, but I took it anyway. I followed the neglected trail through knee–high grass and over a dry creek bed, my helmet scraping branches as I crossed the bank. The ground grew squishy, the mosquitoes thicker, the grasses and wildflowers now up to my waist.

There I was again, lost somewhere along the Leon Creek Greenway, but enjoying it. I’ve ridden the mountain bike trails along the …

By: Kaley Green | www.myhighplains.com

CANYON, Texas (KAMR) – For a decade, Ryan Parnell and his family have used their love for biking to raise more than $1.6 million for cancer patients in the Texas Panhandle.

“24 Hours in the Canyon is a fundraiser that we put on to fund a free cancer survivorship program that is for adults and children when they’re diagnosed with cancer,” Parnell said, “and then through their treatment and beyond, it provides free resources for them and it’s all about raising money for cancer.”

Valley Ranch Dickey’s BBQ Aroma Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 3, 2018 by Rick AnkrumJune 3, 2018

Got a late start (12:40 pm) on today’s bike ride putting me in the heat of the day. Getting home from church means starting late but that’s okay. I selected a shorter route riding the “Oakhurst – Valley Ranch” one for a total of 26.12 miles. This makes the week a total of 206.28 miles, the fifth week out of the last six over 200 miles. June is up to 93.27 miles; leaves 706.7 miles to reach June’s goal. I am only 4.3 miles from 3000 miles for the year to date.

Weather during the bike ride today: start 91 (55% humidity), partly cloudy, wind W 6 mph. Finish 95 (50% humidity), a few clouds, wind 5 mph.

I saw one other cyclist in Kingwood Place. He was riding south on Kingwood Place Drive as I approached from the west on Royston Drive. He was wearing a bright orange jersey.

After biking through Oakhurst, Briar Tree and Valley Ranch I stopped at the Texaco station on the service road to refill my water bottle. I took this photo which kind of a selfie with me reflected in the window.

Bike Ride Valley Ranch Texaco

When I went inside the Dickey’s BBQ aroma tried to grab me when I went to the drink dispenser to refill my water bottle but I overcame it and went back out side to continue the bike ride. Riding south I thought the wind would slow me down some but I actually was able to improve my average speed to 14.2 mph. sometimes when the trees to my right ended and an open space appeared the wind kicked up but those didn’t last long.

Making the u-turn at I-69/US59 and Nothpark Drive I rode north to get back into Kingwood through Woodridge Forest. I finished the bike ride at 2:37 pm glad to go inside and cool off. During the ride it wasn’t too bad as long as I was moving.

Update on my eyeglasses. I tried some “Super” glue on my current glasses nose piece but it must be made of some oily plastic because it had no effect. Getting my old glasses out I discovered they had the same problem but not as advanced. The nose piece appears to be made of the same material. Looks like a design defect with the sharp edge of the frame cutting into the soft plastic where the two come together. If I had a 3-D printer this would be project.

More hot and ry weather on Monday. I plan on riding earlier than today.

Twenty-one University of Texas students will pass through town Monday as part of a 4,000-mile international bike ride designed to raise money for cancer research and treatment.

Along the way they stop in various American and Canadian cities to educate communities about cancer, and to visit cancer treatment centers such as M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. The 21 young …

Hundreds of Central Texas children were at Miller Park last month for a Safe Kids Day.

They had bicycle helmets properly fitted and made their way through a closely guarded obstacle course.

Others munched on hot dogs and played games at the Temple park.
