About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Ending A Week Of Zwift Rides. Makuri Islands Neokyo All-Nighter

Texbiker.net Posted on January 21, 2024 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 21, 2024

It’s been over 14 months since I rode this route. The distance is 15.1 miles and 550 feet elevation gain. The road is flat to rolling hills for 7.86 miles. A quick 39 foot climb in a quarter of a mile to the next level of lumpy road. The only big climb starts at 10.1 miles going up from 254 feet to 430 feet. A downhill for 1.33 miles and a little hill brings the ride to the final 1.23 miles and the finish. Strava 3rd fastest time on Neokyo All-Nighter (52:44).

Dallas plots bike/ped path on roadway between downtown and Greenville Ave

By Claire St. Amant | dallas.culturemap.com

A makeover is in the works on a major thoroughfare out of downtown Dallas including the addition of a new bike path: Specifically, Ross Avenue, in a nearly two-mile span between the Arts District and Lower Greenville.

Plans by the City of Dallas would add a wide, shared-use path for pedestrians and cyclists, starting at IH-345 and extending 1.89 miles to the intersection of Greenville Avenue. There’s also the …

Gary Wayne McRae Obituary

Gary Wayne McRae, 58, of Georgetown, TX, passed away on January 10, 2024. He was born on April 24, 1965, in Irving, Texas, to the late Charles A. McRae and Carol S. McRae. Gary is survived by his beloved wife Jan Harvey McRae, his brother, Brian A. McRae (Gretchen), and his sister, Laura Slayton (Donnie). He was also cherished by his five nephews and nieces.

Gary had a remarkable career as a firefighter and paramedic. He dedicated his life to serving others, working in Irving, TX, Aurora, CO, and Colorado Springs, CO. Gary’s passion for his profession was evident as he became the valedictorian of each of his three firefighter classes. His commitment and skill earned him numerous accolades, including winning two gold, five silver, and one bronze medal in the 1988, 1990, and 1994 Fire Fighter Olympics.

Outside of his career, Gary had a wide range of interests and hobbies. He was an avid cyclist and completed four “Everesting” rides, which took from 15 to 40 hours to complete and involved riding the equivalent of climbing Mount Everest – over 29,000 feet. Day 9:Rest day in Sanderson: Cold temps keep us sidelined in small town Sanderson Saturday January 20, 2024 We aren’t racing against time as we are biking the country for a year and we decided another day of riding 50 + miles in 34 degree weather wasn’t good for our health.

So we stayed an extra day in Sanderson. We were able to get much needed extra sleep and did a quick tour of town.

We stopped at Ferguson Motors for a sandwich and salad for lunch. They we checked out the …

Roule Ma Poule: Counter-Clockwise Ride, Two Climbs and a Long Flat

Texbiker.net Posted on January 20, 2024 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 20, 2024

I wanted to ride a route in France today. Checking the available worlds France wasn’t listed so I thought I would need to create a meetup. As I scrolled the upcoming events in the Zwift companion app Stage 4 of the Tour de Zwift was starting at noon. Looking at the ride groups, group B was riding the France Roule Ma Roule route. My want was satisfied. I signed on and waited. I rode this route twice before, January 9th, 2022 and January 23rd, 2021. It would a refresher after a 2 year absence.

Roule Ma Poule is essentially the reverse version of the Casse-Pattes route, covering the full outer loop in a counter-clockwise direction with a different start/finish location atop the Petit KOM. (from ZwiftInsider.com) This will be my third ride on this route. the last one was January 9th, 2022. The distance: 16.9 miles and 863 elevation gain. The first .28 miles is flat followed by a 1.75 long climb gaining 352 feet. The downhill is 1.76 miles going onto a 1.42 mile long flat. The short .68 mile climb gains 68 feet. From the top of that hill to the bottom of the last climb is 8.68 miles. The last climb repeats part of the opening climb to the finish.

Two Strava PR’s: PR on Aqueduc KOM (57s) and PR on Roule Ma Poule (47:26).

ZwiftPower.com results put me at 359 out of 402.

Here are America’s Best New Bike Lanes of 2023

by: Ron Johnson | momentummag.com

Every six months of so, Momentum publishes a crowd-sourced list of the worst bike lanes on the planet. It’s fun, and hopefully the naming and shaming plays a role in bringing about change. But it’s also important to give a proverbial pat the back when good things happen. And that’s what bicycle advocacy organization People For Bikes did recently with the publication of a list of the best bike lanes in America.

The surge in bike lane projects witnessed last year is just the beginning, with thousands more in the pipeline and an unprecedented influx of federal funds promising an even brighter future for cyclists.

Through a $6 million Midtown Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone project, San Antonio transformed Avenue B into a cyclist-friendly corridor, contributing to the city’s expanding network of bike lanes and trails. Plans to extend the bike lane further north reflect the city’s commitment to enhancing connectivity. …

Day 7:Alpine to Marathon: 22mph tailwinds, yes please

Thursday January 18, 2024, 31 miles (50 km) – Total so far: 274 miles (441 km) We only had thirty miles to cover today, the temperature was warming up, and we were going to have a lot of wind. Thankfully entirely on our backs.

Before we left Alpine we got coffee and breakfast sandwiches from the Bread Garden. The owner Gavi bakes all of her bread and we were able to try her fresh baked English muffins. Incredible! Highly recommend stopping there while going through Alpine. She also carries to go sandwiches and lots of healthy snacks

The ride today was gentle ups and downs, continued great shoulders, and a nice downhill into Marathon. Highway 90 is really a dream road to ride.

We got into Marathon early so we stopped at …

Day 8:Marathon to Sanderson: Here come the headwinds!

Friday January 19, 2024, 55 miles (89 km) – Total so far: 329 miles (529 km) We’ve been lucky so far. We have had tailwinds most of this stretch in Texas. Today, we got the strong headwinds all day. And it was cold.

We woke up in our tent at 6am to the wind whipping every which way. We finally dragged ourselves out at 8, packed up, and went to get coffee and something to eat. We probably should have gone back to the French Grocer but chose to try the V6 coffeeshop attached to the Gage Hotel. It was overpriced and a bit snobby for us but it was fuel for our long day.

It was just above freezing when we left Marathon and the …
