About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

A veteran’s Journey: Local man bikes more than 500 miles for PTSD awareness

By ALEXIS AGUIRRE | www.valleymorningstar.com

HARLINGEN — As the sun beats down on his face, drying up his skin and giving him sunburn, Joseph De la Garza just views this as a sacrifice he has to make to get the word out.

Staying in bed and breakfasts, hotels and camp grounds, De la Garza is on a mission to bring awareness to mental health in the military and break the stigma around PTSD through a very long bike ride. …

2018 Texas State Time Trial Championships

Stefan Rothe | stefan-rothe.blogspot.com

After not having competed in the TX State Time Trial Championships for 5 years I decided early last week to give it a shot and join my teammate (and defending champion) Justin Stanley in trying to keep the Time Trial title within the team. The last time I did the TT Champs was back in 2013 when now-retired Kiwi pro & ex-teammate Logan Hutchings beat me pretty handily for the title in Lytle, TX on a similar course like this past weekend in Hempstead, TX.

With stage & TT-only races races becoming extinct in Texas and most bigger US races only …

Longview Transit land deal, Maude Cobb parking lot work on city’s plate

By Jimmy Daniell Isaac | www.news-journal.com

A $285,000 price for land needed to continue Longview Multimodal Transportation Center expansion is among several items before the Longview City Council this week.

Council members also might hire a contractor to rehab the south parking lot of Maude Cobb Convention and Activity Center in a project that might affect some scheduling and events. …

… Among the council’s final actions Thursday will be a public hearing about the city’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan. Members could adopt the plan after the hearing.

The Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan serves as a guide for planning bicycle and pedestrian facility improvements throughout the Longview area and recommends ways to improve the safety, accessibility and mobility of people biking and walking. The plan proposes a comprehensive network of trails, sidewalks and bikeways and recommends public policies, projects and programs to facilitate implementation.

Dark Then Gray Changing to Some White Clouds Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on May 21, 2018 by Rick AnkrumMay 21, 2018

After last evening’s nice rain (1.55″ at my home) today started out with some dark clouds floating around. That didn’t deter me from biking so I set out on the “Atascocita South – Walden – Huffman” route and biked 35.14 miles. This put me past my May goal of 660 miles by 1.81 miles.

For the first 10 miles I thought I might get caught in rain but the dark clouds went away replaced by gray ones and then some white clouds.

The weather during the bike ride: start 83 (79% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind SE 9 mph. Finish 84 (58% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind SE 7 mph. I started biking at 11:11 am and finished at 1:45 pm. The usual attire: shorts and short sleeve jersey. Some places along the route looked like they got more rain and some a lot less if any at all. More rain is in the forecast for later today. The high humidity made for a muggie bike ride.

I made a brief stop at the Huffman Chevron to take a drink and give my legs a minute to prepare for the ride west on FM 1960. I expected the wind to offer resistance but it turned out to not be too bad biking over Lake Houston.

Rain might hang around for Tuesday but I plan on biking if there is some dry time.

College Station City Council may consider bike-share regulations with Texas A&M program primed to expand

As Ofo’s yellow bicycles have become ubiquitous around the Texas A&M campus — with a few thousand more on the way — the city of College Station is studying potential regulations for dockless bike-sharing.

The university’s pilot program with the Chinese bike-sharing company Ofo began in late February with 500 bicycles, which quickly …
