About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Bike Ride With Memories

Texbiker.net Posted on May 15, 2018 by Rick AnkrumMay 15, 2018

“New Caney – Gene Campbell Road” was the route choice for today. I wanted to ride a little shorter distance than yesterday and this fit the bill coming in at 37.42 miles. Starting at 11:13 am the weather was perfect: start 85 (57% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind SW 5 mph. Finish 91 (38% humidity), a few clouds, wind 4 mph. Wind wasn’t a problem for my legs today. Attire was the typical summer one: shorts and short sleeve jersey.

Nothing out of the ordinary along the route including no other cyclists spotted. No rest stop today though I should have made stop to refill my water bottle. I was thirsty by the time I finished at 1:50 pm.

Last year on this date I biked from Marathon to Key West Florida. This was the second day, dividing the 100 miles from Key Largo to Key West into two days. The first day I rode alone but on the second I started out with another cyclist and after the 7 mile bridge we were joined by two other cyclists. Two photos from the ride.

Jim, Sandrine and Peter

Kiki’s Restaurant

Biking today the weather was about the same as then. More on tap for the several days.

I am getting closer to my May goal of 660 miles with 484.6 miles so far.

On May 1st the National Bike Challenge began. If you haven’t signed up it is easy. If you want to join a team checkout Team Texbiker.net.

SAFETY FIRST: Know the rules of the road for cyclists

By TRAVIS M. WHITEHEAD | www.valleymorningstar.com

SAN BENITO — Did you know your bicycle is a vehicle?

And like drivers, there are laws that govern cyclists. So when it comes to bicycle safety, it’s important to know the rules of the road.

Like many children, Betty Guerrero, 10, didn’t know her bike is considered a vehicle. But she found out soon enough and a whole lot more at a San Benito bike rodeo this past weekend. …

Currently, about 1-2% of Houstonians ride their bikes daily. We're going to see that number soar as the @HoustonBikePlan comes to fruition. For reference, from '96 to '15, NYC saw a direct correlation in creating bike infrastructure and growing ridership. https://t.co/UUZLHe6Lj5

Gum Gully Bike Ride, Not Stuck

Texbiker.net Posted on May 14, 2018 by Rick AnkrumMay 14, 2018

One year ago today I was biking the Florida keys. I took two days and the first day I biked from Key Largo to Marathon where I spent the night with my wife. Today I bicycled the “Kingwood – Hare Cook Road – Kingwood” route at home for a total of 44.78 miles. The weather during the ride: start 88 (55% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind S 9 mph. Finish 90 (44% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind S 9 mph.

Now that the weather has stabilized around 90 degrees with sunshine my riding attire consists of shorts and a short sleeve jersey with sunscreen.

The ride started at 11:05 am but I wanted to start earlier since it was a rest day for the Giro d”Italia. The delay was from watching a podcast that lasted longer than I thought it would.

Out on the road nothing out of the ordinary except for a young man riding a mountain bike on Old Atascocita Road at the railroad crossing. Later on FM 2100 when I was riding north from Hare Cook Road I passed him again. Apparently when I went straight on Old Atascocita Road when I crossed FM 2100 he must have turned right onto FM 2100. I waved both times when I passed him.

On Old Atascocita Road east of FM 2100 I stopped at Gum Gully and took these photos. In the first photo way in the distance the road comes to a “T” intersection where I turned right.

The lush brush to the right of the bike helped shield me from the wind up to that point. Not too far after this spot I was out in the open where the wind tried to slow me down. The grass farms keep the trees cut down which might form a wind break.

On Ramsey Road riding south I had a headwind dropping my average speed down some until I made the right turn onto Stroker Road. Drinking some cool water at the turn helped to revive my pedaling as I headed to the left turn to ride into the wind again. Miller Wilson Road had more trees which held up the wind some but I could tell the difference when the route moved to Hare Cook Road going to the west. On Fm 2100 the tailwind was more pronounced helping me ride to Huffman.

At Huffman I decided to take a break at the Chevron station to refill my water bottle and eat a couple of granola bars. This was at the 33 mile point. This is what the Elemnt computer recorded up to there.

Wahoo bike ride summary at Huffman

Cold water tasted good as I sat on a plastic milk crate in the shade. After about 20 minutes I was back on the bike to ride back to Kingwood and finish the bike ride. I made it to Kingwood Drive with a few minutes to spare before the high school traffic let loose. Winding through the side streets I finished the bike ride at 2:39 pm.

The other day I wrote about my home weather station failure. On Saturday the replacement Ambient Weather station arrived and I installed it yesterday (Sunday). It is up and running reporting to Wunderground.com. The home weather at the start and finish with the new station. I use the wind data from the airport because of the trees affect the wind in Kingwood.

More dry hot weather on tap for Tuesday. Good for biking.

Harvest Happenings – May 2018

Page Austin | www.crosstimbersgazette.com

Doing life in a community like Harvest can impact you in ways you couldn’t imagine. We have created a culture where neighbors not only know each other but walk alongside each other in good and bad times. They care for one another in ways that an outsider looking in can’t comprehend.

We were most recently reminded of this through the Adams family. John, Michell, and their two children Sam and Sophie moved to Harvest in September 2016. The family quickly adapted into the Harvest family. Sam is often found riding his bike around Harvest hunting for spiders or talking to the Northlake Police officers…his hero is Officer Cody Long. Sam wants to grow up and be an officer just like him. …

May is National Bike Month, when everyone is encouraged everywhere to get out there and ride. But for many traffic-challenged Houstonians, this means that May is also “Why Is That Damn Cyclist In Front Of Me” Month.

Or “If You’re Dumb Enough To Get On A Bike And Ride Houston’s Streets, Then It’s Not The Driver’s Fault When You Get Fatally Struck By A Vehicle” Month.
