About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Liberty County, Amtrak and Mileage Duplicated Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 24, 2018 by Rick AnkrumApril 24, 2018

More beautiful weather for today’s bike ride. Weather during the bike ride: 11:39 am start 80 (53% humidity), clear, wind N 6 mph. 2:51 pm finish 84 (48% humidity), clear, wind variable 6 mph. It was so nice I left the long sleeve jersey at home and wore shorts with a short sleeve jersey. It was nice for the wind to be less than yesterday.

To try to reach my goal of 40+ miles I chose the “May Park Community Center – Huffman” route and biked 41.55 miles, the same as yesterday. Very unusual for two days to be the same distance on different routes. This increases April biking to 563.6 miles leaving 36.4 miles to reach my 600 mile goal.

I wasn’t sure if I would see another cyclist along the route but I saw a cyclist riding west over Lake Houston while I rode to the east.

The route is one of the few that takes me into Liberty County but only by a couple tenths of a mile. I stopped at the county line and took these photos. The first is before I rode into Liberty County and the second is returning back to Harris County. Notice the size of the signs.

While I standing along side of the road after taking the photos I heard the train whistle to the west. It was around 1:20 pm and the Amtrak train could be the source so I waited and took these photos as it headed east to Beaumont and finally New Orleans.

After the train passed I got back on the Canyon and rode to the May Community Center. From there I headed west to FM 2100. Arriving at the traffic light I waited for it to change and finally gave up and went north to make a u-turn and cross the road. About the time I was going to do that traffic increased and a couple of cars arrived to trip the traffic light I had left. I would have been ahead to wait at the traffic light.

The ride south on FM 2100 went quickly with the help of the light wind and when I arrived at FM 1960 I stopped at the Huffman Chevron for a short break. I refilled my water bottle and ate a snack I brought. While I was there I saw my first pair of “love bugs” of the season. On an earlier ride I saw one but not a pair. I hope the swarms are small this season. After the rest I rode west on FM 1960 with a nice tempo. I was able to increase my average speed to 15.0 mph and then 15.1 mph. I held the 15.0 mph average until I crossed Kingwood Drive where it start to decrease as I made my way to the finish. The Kingwood High School traffic had not started yet and I crossed Kingwood Drive without stopping for traffic.

More great weather on tap for Wednesday biking.

Cycling the Hill Country of Texas

Cycle4Retirement | cycle4retirement.com

We recently returned from a six-day, five-night tour following the Adventure Cycling route starting in Fredericksburg, TX, cycling counter-clockwise through Albert, Blanco, and New Braunfels and Austin. We then took the Pendenales Cutoff back to Fredericksburg. We used a mixture of camping and hotels. We also decided to eat all meals in restaurants so we didn’t bring any cooking gear. (This decision will haunt us later…)

Video: What’s the most dangerous stretch of road for bicyclists in Austin?

Pam LeBlanc | fitness.blog.austin360.com

Anyone who has ridden a bicycle around Austin on a regular basis knows the feeling of a near miss.

In my 15 or so years of pedaling to work, I’ve come close to getting hit by a car several times. I’ve also been yelled at, spit on and flipped off, but that’s another story. I still love to bike to work, and it helps keep me fit and happy – two things I don’t get from getting stuck in traffic when I drive my car down MoPac Boulevard. …

Day 20: Adrian TX to Tucumcari NM: A new landscape

Sunday April 22, 2018, 70 miles (113 km) – Total so far: 1,047 miles (1,685 km)
We had a nice start today, six miles on the flat service road with no traffic. Then the road ended and we rode 20 miles on I-40 which was very smooth and fast. It was a little nerve-racking. I’m not wild about the vacuum you feel sometimes when the trucks pass and pull you along a little in their draft. It did help our average for the day of 12 mph though. …

Monday April 23, 2018, 39 miles (63 km) – Total so far: 822 miles (1,323 km)
I have a theorem, which I believe tombe true, and the road we chose today worked perfectly based upon this choice. Today was a glorious day for riding. The ACA route travels on excellent Farm Road 390 which has good pavement and shoulders plus little traffic. The area is once again lush and prosperous looking with a few hills thrown in for good measure. We stopped for lunch in Navasota at Classic Rock Coffee. It’s on the left side coming into town. Lazy Sunday, Not On Monday Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 23, 2018 by Rick AnkrumApril 23, 2018

I was kind of lazy yesterday (Sunday) and did not ride. It was 58 degrees when I got home from church around 11:30 am. Then I decided to watch Liège-Bastogne-Liège bike race while waiting for the clouds to go away and the temperature to improve to the 60’s at least. Around 2 pm the sun peaked through a little and the temperature creeped up to the low 60’s. By then I was into the race and kept watching. By the time the race ended (I watched from the DVR) I made up my mind it was too late to ride.

Today was different. The sun came up shining and the temperature was 75 when I left on the bike ride at 11:43 am. I chose the “New Caney – Roman Forest – Valley Ranch” planning on biking 40+ miles to make a big dent in my April mileage goal. The route delivered and I biked 41.55 miles improving my April total to 522 miles; only 78 miles more to go. The weather during the bike ride: start 75 (53% humidity), clear, wind NW 10 mph. Finish 79 (48% humidity), clear, wind NW 9 mph, gusts 20 mph.

Wardrobe selection for the bike ride: shorts, long sleeve jersey (no thermal) with a short sleeve jersey over that. At the beginning of the ride I was a little cool when in the shade but after exerting energy riding into the wind I warmed up pretty quickly.

This fit my motto of riding into the wind until the turn around point and enjoying the tailwind home helping tired legs. The stiff NW wind gusts made the trip to Roman Forest hard but riding east into Roman Forest wasn’t so bad with the wind generally behind me. Riding back out wasn’t quite as easy with the headwind gusts.

As I rode through Tavola I stopped and took these photos.

Behind where I took these photos construction was underway on more streets.

Leaving Tavola I turned right onto Roman Forest Blvd. With the helpful tailwind I made good time to the right turn onto Magnolia Bend. Some of the streets in Roman Forest have bumpy asphalt where the culverts have been replaced under the road. Magnolia Bend has more than its share of these. Riding onto Willow Way I went by the new Dogwood Elementary school before making my way to Appian Way. At the turn I could see new asphalt on both directions of Appian Way with the old pothole section now nice and smooth. Riding east I stopped at Galaxy Drive and took this photo showing the old street to the back of Roman Forest. I used to bike that way but the street is two way and the potholes are numerous.

To the left in the photo the split lanes end and shift to the road at the top. I think the last time I biked on the two way street I had a dog chase after the road turns left and goes back to Roman Forest Blvd.

Once I was back at I-69/US59 the south bound service road with the right rear quarter tailwind biking speed picked up again allowing me to improve my average speed to 15.0 mph which I held all the way back to Kings Manor and into Kingwood. I was in front of all the school traffic finishing the bike ride at 2:40 pm.

More great weather for Tuesday and maybe I will ride 40+ miles again.

Cruising Route 66

Day 19: Amarillo to Adrian TX: Cadillac Mud Ranch

Saturday April 21, 2018, 45 miles (72 km) – Total so far: 977 miles (1,572 km)
Slow start today. Camping adds time to the departing process in the morning, and packing up in a cold foggy drizzle after a night of rain is a bigger production. Then we had some navigation challenges to find the Cadillac Ranch. The Adventure Cycling Route is north of I-40 but the ranch is on the south side, which was a little confusing.
Barry and I pulled up to the ranch to see a 50 yard field of mud between us and the Cadillacs. After 200+ days without rain, Amarillo got almost a half inch during the thunderstorm the night before. Walk it we did, in our bike shoes, to get the essential photo op. …

Day 19: Crockett to Madisonville: Sunday Solitude (and birds)

Sunday April 22, 2018, 40 miles (64 km) – Total so far: 783 miles (1,260 km)
Sunday is always a great day to get an early start. Until approximately 10:30 am most of the rest of the world is relaxing at home. The end result is the roads are almost devoid of traffic! We took Texas #21 SW to Madisonville. Cars were not around till late morning. Most of our company was wildflowers and birds … great solitude on a Sunday morning. Our route had good shoulders almost the entire route which made for a nice ride. …

Day 40. Austin to Buescher State Park

Sunday April 22, 2018, 81 km (50 miles) – Total so far: 2,805 km (1,743 miles)
The forecast had been for rain in the morning and heavy thunderstorms in the afternoon. We were happy to set off with cool and overcast weather but no rain. The ride out of Austin was better than the highway coming in. On the outskirts we cycled through Monopolis which looked like a poor and depressed town but there was a smart cafe, restaurant, and a couple of gated communities. There were also several churches and a colorful smoke shop. This side of Austin looks …

When we woke up, the humidity inside the shelter was gone and our things we drier than I had hoped for. We stopped at the park’s office to thank the staff for their great help. If it hadn’t been for a cancellation and Kathy’s suggestion, we’d have had a miserable night. The morning was sunny and cool and we had a nice ride through pretty countryside. We might as well be in another state with all the greenery and lushness around us. The cattle looked content as they were …

El Paso to Van Horn: A century full of dust devils and honeybees

Friday April 20, 2018, 115 miles (185 km) – Total so far: 1,031 miles (1,659 km)
Since there weren’t a lot of good options out of El Paso, I decided to push into Van Horn. It’s mostly flat ~ 2000 feet of elevation gain over 115 miles. For the first 60 miles or so, I either had a side wind or a headwind, it was slow going. As I got closer to the interstate, my luck changed and I was met by a strong tailwind. This made the afternoon go much faster. …

I thought I was done with the mountains. Today, I was planning on an 85 miler with 3500 ft of climb. Somehow the GPS route and Google Maps let me down. My GPS clocked around 4200 feet of climb. It was easier than the Emory Pass, but not by a ton. …

Riding Along The Rio Grande

By shary koenig | www.crazyguyonabike.com

INTRODUCTION: RIDING ALONG THE RIO GRANDE

Sunday April 1, 2018
Luke Dittrich is one of the best writers/reporters in our country. Even before reading Luke’s story about “Walking The Border” I had the idea of riding as close to the Texas/Mexican Border as I could. Before doing any research I didn’t know how many parts of Donald Trump’s Wall were already constructed, or how many sections of the wall had been built by previous administrations, or what the people living in the area felt about having a wall built. I knew from past …

Fort Handcock to Sierra Bianco: Riding Through The Pass

Sunday April 8, 2018, 42 miles (68 km) – Total so far: 78 miles (126 km)
It’s Sunday and we’ve reached the first place where food was available, a huge Truck Stop, lots of colorful Mexican imports , and a rather cold air conditioned restaurant. To get here was mostly a fun ride with just us and the Texas landscape. Not a single car passed us for 2 hours as we rolled along FM 192. The last two miles were up and hard pedaling into the wind, so by the time we reached the restaurant I was sincerely wishing the waitress would let …

Sierra Blanca To Van Horn: A Jubilant Day

Monday April 9, 2018, 31 miles (50 km) – Total so far: 109 miles (175 km)
Cause to celebrate!!! We are on our 3rd day of riding, statistically the hardest day when beginning a tour. Instead, we finished riding by 2:00 and I’m not even exhausted. It would actually be 1:00 except that we crossed back into Central Time a few miles back. I am jubilant that we rode through our second Mountain Pass and I was able to endure the hour and a half climb without feeling like we’d have to quit the tour. Yeah , Mom! Video: Cyclists say dangerous debris a problem in bike lanes

By: Arezow Doost | www.kxan.com

AUSTIN (KXAN) – Vince Marotte rides his bike up to five times a week. His trips can go from 20 miles to 120 miles. The cyclist says lately the bike lanes he travels on are a mess.

“Watch out for those barrels,” he yells out to his group of cyclists Sunday afternoon.
