About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Wax Leaf Ligustrum Fragrance Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 10, 2018 by Rick AnkrumApril 10, 2018

After several days of bad biking weather today dawned with lots of sun and warmth. Setting out at 11:26 am on the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route I biked 35.2 miles. The fragrance of wax leaf ligustrums filled my nostrils along the ride sometimes as well as other plants. I think there was honey suckle out there too.

The weather during the bike ride: start 73 (52% humidity), clear, wind N 14 mph. Finish 76 (44% humidity), clear, wind N 13 mph, gusts 18 mph. I don’t think of April as a windy month but so far each ride in April has been fighting the wind for lengthy sections. Today the hardest part was biking east over Lake Houston on FM 1960. I pedaled hard and the Elemnt showed watts in the 450+ range for extended times. My legs were grateful for the right turn onto Fairlake Drive moving the wind to my back and the road among all of the trees.

Earlier when I stopped for the traffic light at Atascocita Shores Drive and FM 1960 another cyclist exited FM 1960 riding north on Atascocita Shores but they didn’t look my way. Later as I rode west on FM 1960 just before coming to Lake Houston a cyclist was riding east in a florescent green shirt. He saw me and we waved.

Tomorrow the weather should be a few degrees warmer and maybe not quite so windy. I plan on biking.

There’s a single building on the side of the highway outside Langtry, Texas, that I think started as a gas station, but did hard time as a restaurant, motel, and grocery store before someone finally did the merciful thing and shut the place down for good. Day 28. Van Horn to Marfa

Tuesday April 10, 2018, 118 km (73 miles) – Total so far: 1,878 km (1,167 miles)
One can’t be lucky with the wind every day. Sunrise now is only ‪at 7:45‬ because we arrived in the central time zone yesterday. It was still dark, starry, and windstill when I woke up. We left an hour later and it was a beautiful morning to ride on SR90 to Marfa. It must have been the longest straight road that we’ve ridden so far. There were a few slight turns but basically it was flat and gently rolling uphill for 118km. Border patrol was our constant companion : trucks and cars flying down …

Brackettville, TX to Camp Wood, TX: 51 miles

Saturday April 7, 2018
I am in a green countryside now, which is a dramatic change from just two days ago in Del Rio.

Day 6: Fredericksburg to Kerrville: Birds and Amazon!

Monday April 9, 2018, 40 miles (64 km) – Total so far: 257 miles (414 km)
What could birds and Amazon have in common? Normally the answer would be nothing, but today the two items were related. Our plan was to have a shorter ride from Fredericksburg to our WarmShowers host west of Kerrville. The ride itself was uneventful … wide shoulders, easy, and fast with a north wind (tailwind).
When we arrived in Kerrville we stopped by a gasoline station named Stripes. We had learned one …

The Outspoken Cyclist Podcast Show #395 – April 7, 2018

Diane Jenks | outspokencyclist.com

We begin this week with a conversation about statistics with Russ Rader, VP of Communications at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. What we learn is that there is a lot of research going on to help stakeholders such as insurance companies, automobile manufacturers, and government learn about what things do and don’t work to make drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists safer. And, there is a LOT of useful information available on the site!

Russ and I talk about the increase in cyclists’ fatalities, what might have happened with the autonomous vehicle that struck and killed the pedestrian walking her bike across the street, and what recommendations are being made to change the behavior of distracted drivers.

Then, it’s off to Texas to talk with Officer (Lt.) Wren Nealy. Wren is the president of IPMBA – The International Police Mountain Bike Association. He’s also an EMT with the Cypress Creek EMS, and a retired Police Lieutenant. Once again, the conversation goes to safety, how bicycle patrols work, and what cyclists should remember while on the road. And, we talk about the bike medic response team! …

Sunday April 8, 2018, 50 miles (80 km) – Total so far: 217 miles (349 km)
Today was our wildflower bonanza. From the moment we left Llano we had miles and miles of never ending wildflowers. Bike crashes down, but cyclists still face dangers on Austin roads

By Mary Huber | www.mystatesman.com

Austin streets can be dangerous places for cyclists who fight traffic every day and risk crashes with vehicles.

Though data show a decline in the number of bike crashes on Austin roads in recent years, bike safety remains an issue on the city’s congested streets — as evidenced last week when a cyclist who was critically injured in a suspected drunken driving crash last summer was hit again, less than a year after the collision that put her in the hospital with a breathing tube. …

New Austin bike-sharing program would be first of its kind in the city

By Sidney Phillips | austin.culturemap.com

On April 4, the City of Austin kicked off plans to start its first dockless bike sharing program. The system would provide a cheap, super convenient, and environmentally conscious way to get around the city by allowing users to simply pick up a bike and leave it anywhere using remote GPS technology.

The forum followed the city’s approval in February of a 12-month pilot phase …

Day 4: Goldthwaite to Llano: Drizzle and 34F. In Texas??

Saturday April 7, 2018, 56 miles (90 km) – Total so far: 167 miles (269 km)
Yesterday I had trouble staying hydrated in the 87F heat. No problem. Wait a day and over night the temperature dropped big time. At the start of today’s ride it was 34F and drizzling. One fringe benefit of these kind of temperatures is that it almost guarantees a HUGE wind out of the north. Thankfully we are heading south and flew during today’s ride. We averaged 13 mph over the day’s ride, while yesterday with a big headwind we could only average 9.5 mph. …

We’re now in our fourth state, Texas, which will make up one third of our tour. I’m glad our motel was at the far eastern side of El Paso and that we left on a Saturday. The roads were quiet but would have been daunting on other days. We quickly left the city behind us and stopped for breakfast at a Mexican eatery, no English spoken and $5 for both. The cycling was alongside farm land where it was irrigated. We came past many pecan orchards which are just beginning to turn green and …

Galveston, TX: I saw 6 ships come sailing in, come sailing in…………

Saturday April 7, 2018
“Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” – Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
After last night’s carousing around (well sort of, we went dancing to the live band in our hotel’s bar until midnight), and this being an off day, we slept in this morning. One of our new hobbies is taking ballroom dance lessons, so it was fun to have a chance to practice our moves!

The plans today were to catch the trolley that runs on the island. It cost only $1.00 each to ride downtown one-way. So for a whopping $4.00 we had our transportation for the day’s sightseeing!

At 10:00 we walked down the seawall to a trolley stop. That took us to a transfer point to catch another trolley to downtown. …

Sanderson, TX to Langtry, TX: 61 miles

Wednesday April 4, 2018
Today the terrain started to undulate and so did the road, so I did some climbing in my low gears for the first time in days. The wind, chip seal road surface, and historical markers all conspired to slow me down, but my early start got me to Langtry soon enough. The convenience store here is open after all, but I can see why people would pass it by thinking it was closed. A store with old, stand alone, long ago obsolete mechanical gas pumps has been an indicator until today that a business is long closed. …

###Langtry, TX to Del Rio, TX: 60 miles
Thursday April 5, 2018
Today completes my 425 mile, Highway US 90, West Texas tour from El Paso to Del Rio, as tomorrow I start a gradual northeast trajectory towards the Texas Hill Country and Austin. I almost managed to complete the tour without a terrorizing day of experiencing simultaneously rough chip-seal road surface and strong headwinds, but today I got both. It was a ten hour trip to go sixty miles. While sniveling along side the road, the Border Patrol left me for dead, I’m sure. I must tell you …

Del Rio, TX to Brackettville, TX: 31 miles

Friday April 6, 2018
I am tenting tonight at an RV Park on Fort Clark. Fort Clark is abutted to the south side of Brackettville and was an active Army post until 1946 when the fort was declared surplus and sold to a single buyer. The buyer razed the WW2 temporary buildings but left all …

Day 36 – April 7 Saturday – DeRidder TX to Opalousas TX: A wild night and a wild day

Saturday April 7, 2018, 91 miles (146 km) – Total so far: 2,038 miles (3,280 km)
This day started early. And alarm went off on my phone alerting me to a tornado warning. One was spotted a few miles away. I had to stay up till I was sure that threat was gone. We had a crazy t-storm but no tornado. This was caused by a powerful cold front that was passing through. It affected our riding all day. It started out warm enough, 66 degrees, but steadily dropped all day. It dropped over 20 degrees! By the afternoon when it was in the 40s it was hard to keep warm. Especially since the wind was strong all day. The roads gave us challenges all day too. The cracks, potholes and uneven pavement drove us nuts and gave the group plenty of flats. TWO riders had …
