Day 18 Fort Hancock community church. By the High School. We got lucky and called Jerry on 915 525 1997. He arranged to unlock the church and we slept indoors with hot water, restrooms, kitchen (no shower). If you have to stay outside there is a tap on the second building back towards the main street (either library or technology centre, can’t remember.). Also power socket in a couple of places. You can camp there if not able to get indoors. We left a donation. Dinner and breakfast at Angie’s diner by freeway. A pretty poor night’s sleep with strong winds whipping the tents, a bit of rain, and the noise every half hour of a train going through a couple of hundred metres away and for some reason sounding a horn 50 times which quite genuinely must be audible a couple of miles away.

It was a bitterly cold night at the campsite in Marathon, a nice campsite but with little shelter from the cold wind. Poppy had bought a bag of ice to keep the milk cold and had left it on the deck on which I had pitched my tent. In the morning it was frozen to the deck!
But oh the stars! I was awoken by a train at about 1:00am and got up to visit the loo, as a gentleman of advanced years is disposed to do, and as I crossed the campsite I had to stop and gaze in awe at what must be the greatest show on earth. With absolutely no light pollution or cloud cover, I have surely never seen such a sight.
