About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Cedar Park testing bicycle detection tech to make green lights longer

CEDAR PARK, Texas (KXAN) — As you make your way around Cedar Park you’ll see more and more people getting around on bicycles.

On a sunny day, Deya Cruz, her son and their neighbor took to two wheels to go get a tasty treat. “We’re biking to get a snowcone,” Cruz says.

Taylor Philpot says he cycles around his Cedar Park neighborhood. “It saves a lot of money compared to a car, but it’s definitely how …

Cycling in small suburban communities : a case study of Georgetown, TX

repositories.lib.utexas.edu

Small communities have natural advantages in promoting cycling: Smaller geographic scale, major destinations within biking distances, and relatively low volumes of vehicle traffic. Davis, CA and Boulder, CO are known exemplary cycling-friendly communities in the United States. In Texas, however, cycling in small communities remains rare as a transportation means. This study aimed at understanding the driving factors for cycling in Texas suburban communities. The report presents a case study of Georgetown, a suburban city in the Austin Metropolitan Area in Texas. Georgetown is contemplating a Bike Master Plan to address the growing …

March Wind Blows In From February Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on March 1, 2018 by Rick AnkrumMarch 1, 2018

March biking starts well with 34.37 miles today riding the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route. My goal for March is 585 miles, 240 miles more than February. Hopefully the weather will cooperate.

Third bike ride on the Canyon Endurace CF SLX. It continues to be a delight to ride. The disc brakes eliminates several components that catch the wind like the front brakes on the Stradalli. The disc brakes don’t squeal like the rim brakes do on the Stradalli with carbon rims.

The wind will not let up just because a new month started. Weather: start 74 (65% humidity), finish 78 (45% humidity), partly cloudy, wind N 10 mph gusts 25 mph. At least the first 13 miles had a tailwind until I made my way through Walden. Riding east over Lake Houston on FM 1960 made me look forward to the return trip with a somewhat tailwind versus the head wind riding east. I left home at 11:43 am and finished at 2:10 pm.

Two other cyclists were along the route. The first one was ahead of me biking to the west on FM 1960 over Lake Houston, I could just see the orange jacket/jersey in the distance but I could get closer. The other biker was on Kings River Drive as I made my way to W. Lake Houston Parkway. I need to take some pictures of the flowers blooming along the route.

While I was out biking FedEx made a visit to deliver my birthday present from my wife: the TICKRFit from Wahoo Fitness. This is the first heart rate monitor for me. I plan on giving it a test on Friday’s bike ride. Since the PowerPod is not in service while I wait for the out front mount the TICKRFit will provide data on how my heart is doing during the ride. It should work nicely with the Wahoo Elemnt computer. It was easy to setup.

Friday’s weather forecast looks like a repeat of today.

Timeline for Dallas bike share regulations still unclear

www.fox4news.com

DALLAS – At the start of last summer, there were zero ride-share bikes in Dallas. Now, there are more ride-share bikes in Dallas than in any other city in the U.S.

Despite the vast number of bikes, the city of Dallas isn’t regulating them yet. Their plan was to let the bike companies operate with no strings attached. The city would observe, study and then come back with regulations if needed later. …

“Bike Like U Mean It” now available on YouTube

MichaelBluejay | bicycleaustin.info

A friend alerted me that Bike Like U Mean It is now available on YouTube. It chronicles various aspects of the biking scene in Austin in the 90s, such as Critical Mass, the Yellow Bike Project, and Amy Babich. I’m interviewed pretty extensively. What many don’t know is that I carted the filmmakers around in my huge bike trailer on Critical Mass rides so they could get better shots of the ride.

Those were the days.

Survey: Area bikers, pedestrians want more separation from traffic

By Jimmy Daniell Isaac | www.news-journal.com

That was among the findings of an area-wide survey received Wednesday by a Longview transportation planning board looking at …

Good Weather For A Bike Ride Except for Wind

Texbiker.net Posted on February 28, 2018 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 28, 2018

Finally good bike ride weather. It would’ve have been great except for the strong wind. Weather start 83 (71% humidity), finish 84 (64% humidity, mostly cloudy, wind S 21 mph, gusts 28 mph. For the last day February I set out on the “New Caney – Gene Campbell Road” route biking 37.63 miles. Since I already reached my February mileage goal yesterday these miles went towards reducing the January goal shortfall of 88 miles. I have made up 68 of those miles leaving 20 miles to catch up in March.

Leaving at 11:17 am headed north the strong wind propelled me to FM 1485 easily allowing me to get to 15+ mph average speed. I maintained that average until I hit the headwind riding south through Briar Tree and Oakhurst. My legs weren’t putting out enough power to overcome the 28 mph gusts. With the temporary Elemnt mount I don’t have a place for the PowerPod to record wattage but today I probably would’ve had some instances of 400+ watts riding into the wind. Checking on the whereabouts of the new mount: it has traveled from Japan to Germany.

Before the ride I moved the cadence sensor closer to the bottom bracket end of the left crankarm to give some space between my shoe and the sensor. This time I uses 3M Command adhesive strip to make it easier to remove if needed. The area to the left of the sensor is the Command strip release tab. Also in the picture is the new water bottle I received for Christmas for its inaugural use on today’s bike ride.

With the warmer weather plants are starting to bloom like azaleas, just in time for Houston’s Azalea Trail this weekend. It takes place more to the south and west where maybe the cold weather wasn’t as severe.

No rest stop on the ride. The new water bottle had enough water for the whole ride. I was startled as I rode on Riverlawn Drive near the end of the ride in Kingwood when another cyclist called out “on your left” from behind. I was daydreaming and did not see him approaching.

My wardrobe choices were probably a little too pessimistic with the warmer weather: shorts, long sleeve jersey (not a thermal one) and a short sleeve one. As long as I was moving I was okay but when I stopped I was a little warm but the stiff wind took care of that most of the time. Not quite as warm on Thursday as a cool front moves through. I should be riding.
