About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

The Dallas City Council Mobility Solutions, Infrastructure and Sustainability Committee met on Monday to discuss the bike-share programs.

Patience, Dallas, because your bike-share regulations are a ways down the road

Robert Wilonsky | www.dallasnews.com

Monday was Take a Radio Host to Work Day. I brought The Ticket’s Craig Miller to Dallas City Hall.

If you are not a regular listener to sports-talk radio, Craig probably spends more time on a bike than anyone else in this city. He rides every day, sometimes up to 100 miles, then takes vacations to pedal across the country; Europe, too. Risks his life doing it, like …

For Now, Dallas Remains the Bike-Share Wild West

STEPHEN YOUNG | www.dallasobserver.com

The idea, put forward by Dallas officials and reported in the Observer and elsewhere throughout the end of 2017, was that the City Council was going to do something about the bikes this spring. The public, inasmuch as the public is represented by Dallas social media, was fed up with the green, yellow, silver, orange and red bikes that had sprung up around the city and …

Texas 2018

By Mike Booth |www.crazyguyonabike.com

We had a problem finding any “real” food yesterday – the only options were fast food outlets and garage shops selling coffee & buns. Breakfast @ the hotel is better, we avoid the burgers & waffles with syrup but fill up on yoghurt and scrambled egg. A 60 mile cycle south this morning with stops to look at wildlife and rest as there is a head wind. 3 pale deer stand on a road near a golf course, Red hawks sit on the telegraph wires and cranes fly over. Vultures are everywhere. We cross lots of freight rail lines and …

Canyon Endurace CF SLX First Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on February 27, 2018 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 27, 2018

Today’s bike ride was “New Bike First Ride” day. I figured out a way to attach my Elemnt computer (without the PowerPod though) using the stem mount that comes with the Elemnt. A couple of black cable ties and a piece of old tube to protect the the handle bar and the Elemnt was in place.

Next problem was the water bottle cage. I borrowed one from the Stradalli which is black and goes with the Canyon Endurace CF SLX color scheme. Along with the bottle cage the frame pump moved too.

The speed sensor was an easy move though the hub diameter and width required me to stretch the rubber holder longer than on the Stradalli. The cadence sensor presented a problem in finding a place with enough room. The first location was on the inside of the left crank arm but this was too close to the rear stay with only a milometer of clearance. Then I tried the outside of the right crank arm but the sensor hit the front derailleur. As you can see in the picture above I settled on the outside of the left crank arm. This may need to be moved because my shoe is right beside it. I will have to think about this before moving it again.

Riding a new bike for the first time the legs and body put out more energy and speed goes up from the excitement of the new bike. I had to stop and make a small adjustment to the handlebars to center them with the front tire. Fortunately I had the right hex wrench and it only took a minute to fix.

I selected the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route for the first ride but in the first mile I began to wonder if I would go very far. A few rain sprinkles came down but I kept on pedaling and by the time I crossed back over Northpark Drive no more came down despite the overcast sky. Rain was not what I wanted to have for the first ride. As the ride moved south the wind was strong which I found out after the bike ride was from the south at 22 mph with 29 mph gusts. Maybe starting at 12:44 pm gave the wind time to build up. The temperature was 72 then and I dressed like yesterday: shorts, long sleeve thermal jersey, short sleeve jersey.

The Canyon Endurace CF SLX rode smoothly and lightly. In the wind the wheels caught the wind like the Stradalli’s wheels but not quite as much. The handlebars are “ergo” and oval but comfortable as was the Fizik saddle. Many times the saddle that comes with bikes are not very good but I will ride more on this one. Because my bottom has not regained long miles condition yet the Prologo saddle on the Stradalli and Bellwether shorts have left some soreness after I complete a ride. No so with the Fi’zi:k saddle so far. The 28mm wide tires moved easily over the road surfaces and didn’t seem as harsh as the 23mm tires on the Stradalli. Hopefully the Continental 4000 tires are as durable as the Continental Gatorskins on the Stradalli.

When I bought the Stradalli Red Pro 14 it was a solid improvement from the Motobecane carbon bike it replaced. The improvement from the Stradalli to the Canyon is noticeable but not as drastic. The Canyon handles better in the wind as I learned today. One place where the Canyon handled the rough road surface better was on Atascocita Shores Drive north of FM 1960. This section has many bumps and uneven pavement from numerous concrete patching. The Stradalli goes through this but the Canyon was not as harsh, Probably the wider tires make a difference. I tired to put 25mm tires on the Stradalli and they would not fit.

Finishing the ride at 3:14 pm the overcast sky had transformed to mostly cloudy with some sunshine and the temperature improved to 80 degrees. The thermal jersey was not needed by then but I was home.

With today’s bike ride I passed my February mileage goal of 345 miles (I am at 375.8 miles) and made up 30 miles of the January goal shortage. The weather looks favorable for biking on Wednesday so I should makeup more miles from January.

So months ago, my co-worker, who I call “Chuckles” brow beat me into doing this MTB festival in Terlingua. Man, I needed to get my fat a$$ in shape! My Turner Burner had seen glory days years ago. Time to kick this into high gear! Chuckles lit a fire under me to get movin again. He’s no Andre the Giant, but can knock out the Das Hugo on his road bike and is a climbing machine on his MTB.

So, Chuckles and his buddy snooker me into some loose, rocky stair-step nastiness….and I’m bouncing all over the place on my old Turner w/ 26r wheels! I’m told, hey, you should rent a 29er for a day it will change your life…..

Well, it changed alright….I said hey, my buddy Wes at Velorangutan could set me up on a 29er demo, and …

We catch the Greyhound bus from Dallas to Austin. The coach leaves on time and has comfy seats with lots of leg room, It’s about 1/4 full.
The freeway is soon out of the city, passing motels, cattle ranches ,trailer parks and more churches than would seem necessary.Every space on the pylons is taken by vultures. The route takes us through Waco. It looks like any other US town ,nothing to indicate it’s notorious past.

Everyone Is Watching What Dallas Does With Bike Share

Freeway-choked Dallas, a city whose transportation infrastructure is often downright hostile to anything on fewer than four wheels, was an unlikely candidate to become the bike-share capital of North America. And yet here we are. There are close to 20,000 of the brightly-colored bicycles in Dallas, compared to 12,000 in New York and 10,000 in the bicyclists’ stronghold of Seattle, also having its own reckoning with bike share. …

New Bike Day: Canyon Endurace CF SLX

Texbiker.net Posted on February 26, 2018 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 26, 2018

The bike arrived around 11:15 am on the FedEx Ground truck. The driver came to the door to check that someone was home before bringing the box. He asked me to sign for it before getting the box but I said I would like to see it first. He laughed but said he would do the same after asking me if I thought he would drive off without bring the bike to the door. Once it was inside I began the unboxing and assembly process. These pictures show the action. The black pieces of foam with the strips attached held the tire, handle bar and some other parts to the frame during shipping. I had a problem trying to figure out how to remove the thru-wheel axle for the from wheel from the fork to install the wheel. I called Canyon and after an 8 minute wait I spoke to a man who told me the rear tire lever pulls out and then use it for the front wheel. I tried that before but didn’t pull hard enough. Only one lever reduces the weight of the bike. According to the Canyon website the bike weighs 16.535 pounds without the pedals. I added the Ultegra R8000 pedals that I bought on Ebay. I am waiting for the water bottle cages and out front mount for the Wahoo Elemnt computer to arrive. The mount also includes a GoPro mount for my PowerPod. Once they arrive the first ride takes place. Click on an image to enlarge it.

I will move the speed sensor and cadence sensor from the Stradalli Red Pro 14 before riding. The black tire pump on the Stradalli will move too.
