About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Wilmington veteran ‘Chris-crosses’ America for for Snipes Academy

By David Dean | portcitydaily.com

WILMINGTON — For Wilmington resident Chris Brown, his grandchildren were a welcome sight. Standing in the sand of Wrightsville Beach, one held a sign reading, “52 DAYS 3082 MILES” memorializing the two-month cross-country bicycle trip his grandfather had just completed. …

… Chris Brown, 64, and his wife Carol, 63, started their cross-country journey in San Diego at Torrey Pines State Beach, a familiar spot for the Browns and their three children many years ago when they lived in California. Plotting their course with the help of the Adventure Cycling Association, the couple found bike-friendly highways and byways, such as the famous Route 66. They made their way through California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Virginia and North Carolina, with Chris on his bike and Carol keeping tabs on him from the comfort of their 27-foot recreational vehicle. …

Overdressed Atascocita – Walden Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on February 18, 2018 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 18, 2018

No doubt about it, I overdressed for today’s bike ride. The ride started at 12:38 pm under an overcast sky with 72 degrees (86% humidity). I wasn’t sure about the wind but when i finished the ride I found out it was from the SE at 12 mph with 20 mpg gusts. No wonder it was tough pedaling at time and the watts were high riding into the wind. The overdressed part came about because I wasn’t sure the temperature would get much higher than 72 so I wore a thermal long sleeve jersey (rather than a jacket) with a short sleeve jersey on top with shorts. At first i was comfortable though a little chilly until I warmed up. Once I was warm I didn’t really notice the heat building but when I finished the bike ride and took the thermal jersey off it was soaked.

Before the ride I took these pictures of the Stradalli. I don’t think I took any with the PowerPod. Again the PowerPod performed perfectly without any issues.

2-18-2018 Stradalli RP14 bike ride

The route for today was the “Atascocita – Walden” one but I altered the beginning to get the mileage to 26.51 miles putting the month to date at 175 miles, leaving 170 miles to reach my goal for February.

As the ride progressed the overcast sky improved to mostly cloudy and the temperature went up as well. When I finished at 2:37 pm it was 81 (73% humidity), higher than the forecasted 73.

It should be like this on Monday allowing me to ride again.

Winter Texas MTB Tour

cyclesinlife.com

I joined one of my best friends this past week for a tour of some of Texas’s MTB offerings. We rode some trails in Austin and then headed to Palo Duro Canyon. It was a fun week of car camping and riding some tech in mostly sunshine.

We started in Austin Texas riding at Pace Bend. It was a neat place with some rocky riding. It’s nice to be able to start and end rides from your campsite. There’s about 13 miles of trail that weaves around the peninsula that varies from windy rocky fun to smoother dirt and flow. …

Coast to Coast US Tour via Southern Route

By Nicholas Gimbrone | www.crazyguyonabike.com

That’s it… I’m doing this!
Saturday May 27, 2017
I’ve signed up to do a US “coast to coast” (San Diego to St. Augustine) bicycle tour in March & April of 2018! This has been on my bucket list for over 20 years now… and this journal is about the realization of that dream.
The $ has been sent in, commitments are made to ride my bike from coast to coast… now to prepare!

How I decided to do THIS ride…
Tuesday August 29, 2017
In the past the big blockers on doing this have been:
a) having time available to do it at a pace I can actually achieve (I’m no longer up to 3 weeks of PAC Tour’s 100+ miles daily pace, and really only ever was up to back to back 125-ish mile days);
b) finding a logistics company to remove the logistical hassles for me… for me this really was THE key question (forgive me for going into it more below, but I can’t stress how important it was for me).
Until my retirement, time pretty much eliminated the option. While I could (and still can) imagine doing a crossing in 4 weeks, I doubt it would be anywhere near the fun that a 7 week crossing will be… stopping to take flower pictures (etc) is a part of the fun. …

Storm ravaged TX
Saturday September 2, 2017
Rt 10 in eastern TX has been (literally) under water… Will riding thru the Houston TX area still by then be like riding through a disaster area? Will the displaced fire ants still be a problem for camping? I’m counting on these logistics being handled by others and trying to put the fear out of mind.

Travel Plans All Set
Wednesday October 18, 2017
Travel plans to the start of the trip in San Diego have been firmed up. My wif & I will be traveling via AmTrak, realizing another item from our bucket lists of a cross country train trip, complete with sleeper car. This is exciting!
The plan for after the ride continues to be that the wif will meet us in FL and we will drive back up the coast to home.

One of the niceties of these plans is that the wif will get to see our ceremonial wheel dipping at both ends of the tour! 😉

The start of the long, cold, damp training months just before the ride…
Sunday November 5, 2017
It is getting cooler & wetter here in on the east coast, cutting into my riding. I’m supplementing regular 60 mile rides with 2-7 mile walks on the less pleasant days, and past years’ experiences make me confident that I’ll still get enough winter riding (and exercise) in to be fully ready for the physical side of this ride.

Bye Bye Tiferme: The bike has been shipped, training is done…
Friday February 16, 2018
The bike went off to the shop yesterday for shipping (via BikeFlights, a FedEx reseller specializing in bikes) to the ride start… no more riding until I pick it up a few days before day 1 of the ride.
Riding this winter has, as always, been a bit “catch as catch can”, with 500-600 mile months being typical (both past years and this). February would likely be similar if it were a full month of riding, but that is not to be due to the shipping time requirements. As it is, the 230 miles I got in this rainy month will have to do, backed up with lots of walks (46 miles so far). …

Ride Santa Ana: Refuge weighs cycling, geocaching pursuits

HARLINGEN — Cycling and geocaching have been the most talked about among eight refuge uses which are being reviewed as being appropriate to start or to continue at the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge.

“Several years ago, before the flood in 2010, bicycling had kind of evolved from a few at a time to where it got really popular, and it got going before we …

28th annual Jalapeño 100 Bike Ride forges ahead despite strong winds

HARLINGEN — The wind was harsh, but the smiles were prevalent at the 28th annual Jalapeno 100 Bike Ride on Saturday.

With winds gusting well over 20 mph across Cameron and Willacy counties, the push of air made riding a little more difficult, but it also made finishing much more satisfying. …

Overcast to Partly Cloudy Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on February 17, 2018 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 17, 2018

I delayed the start of today’s ride because of light rain. Instead I did a couple errands and then began the ride at 12:26 pm. The overcast sky hung around as I headed out on the “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route. I had my doubts that I would actually ride the entire route because the rain looked like it would hang around. After about 1.1 miles I looped back to my home to pickup a jacket. The long sleeve and short sleeve jerseys were not doing much against the chilly wind. After getting the jacket I continued the ride through Elm Grove Village in Kingwood. I ran into some more light rain but I rode out of it.

This did not build my confidence that I would complete the planned route but I stayed on the ride. I made mental notes of places along the route where I could turn back if the weather got dicey but I didn’t need to take evasive action. Biking through Woodridge Forest and then to I-69/US59 I turned to the north. The wind still felt chilly but in the distance I saw some blue sky breaking through the overcast sky. The closer I got to Tavola the more blue sky. With this change in the weather I stayed the course to Tavola and the turn back to the south. The jacket wasn’t as important like it was when I stopped at home to get it but I kept it on and pedaled forward. The wind felt stronger than the 4 mph I saw at the finish slowing me down at times when I was out in the open.

Rather than take the usual streets through Oakhurst I detoured through Auburn Trails back to I-69/US59 for the ride back to Kingwood Drive and back into Kingwood through Kings Manor. No school traffic today Making my way through Kingwood I arrived at the finish at 2:54 pm. The blue partly cloudy sky was till with me and the temperature was a nice 79 degrees, up from the 74 degrees at the start.

PowerPod activity today went smoothly. It connected the Elemnt computer after I pressed the start button and no further actions was needed. Power output recorded for the whole bike ride. Hopefully this is the norm from now on.

Overcast and 73 degrees for the Sunday forecast. I hope to get to go for a bike ride. Only 196 miles left to reach my February goal.
