About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Fog, Wet Streets and Sunshine Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on February 14, 2018 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 14, 2018

I waited for the fog to leave but it kept hanging around so at 12:37 pm I rolled the Blue Norcross AL bike out the driveway riding the “Kingwood-Community Drive-Valley Ranch” route for 27.21 miles.

The damp streets dictated where I rode to avoid the puddles but I still managed to get the bike dirty. The real dirt came as I rode on the greenbelt/sidewalk along Kingwood Drive where I encountered a big chunk of sidewalk ripped out for what looked like a water line repair. Mud was everywhere and I tip toed across the driveway but still stepped in thick mud on the overturned sidewalk to get to the dry and mud free section. From there to the finish the streets were not damp thanks to the sun breaking through the clouds.

At the start the weather was finally at 73 degrees and I thought I might have overdressed with shorts, long sleeve and short sleeve jerseys but I was comfortable for the ride though I did sweat some. Sweat is good because it means heat which we have not had much of lately. At the 2:44 pm finish it was 79 degrees and humidity was 79% at my home weather station. The airport weather reported the wind from the south at 9 mph but wasn’t too hard to pedal into.

Early in the ride I saw another cyclist in Sherwood Trails Village but he turned onto another street than I did.

The PowerPod required a reset to start communicating with the Elemnt computer. Not sure what causes this.

It felt great to be biking outdoors and not bundled up. The next two days probably will be like this.

After the ride I washed the bike down to remove all of the road grit and mud. This is not my favorite activity. It doesn’t help that the hose nozzle got damaged from the freezing water and sprays all around the cracks getting me wet.

I am at 84 miles this month with 345 miles as my goal. I will need to ride every weather permitting day to reach my goal.

Gravel riding in Dallas

Mountain Bike Club offers mind-body training

Leah Durain | www.kens5.com

San Antonio teens looking for a team sport without a ball found their stride at a mountain bike club. The high schoolers say the sport has led to regular exercise, state-wide adventures, and lifelong friends.

Taking a listen in McAllister Park you may think there’s a beehive nearby. The buzzing is actually coming from the hum of mountain bikes.

The San Antonio High School Mountain Bike Team meets at the park every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday evening in the Spring. …

The One Thing Missing from the Bike Share Debate

By Alex Macon | www.dmagazine.com

Short version: It’s data. The bike share companies need to cough up ridership info to the city.

As others have pointed out, it’s wonderful that a city as car-clogged as Dallas is talking about bikes at all. But there is one thing missing from both sides of the debate over the value of regulations for the rental bikes we can’t seem to stop writing about, and it’s something the bike share companies seem loathe to share. …

In hit-and-run death of H-E-B ISD trustee’s son, ‘not a lot of answers right now’

BY MATTHEW MARTINEZ | www.star-telegram.com

ALTUS, OKLA.
When it happened, Steven Beaulieu was feeding his competitive nature, cycling hard while training for his second triathlon.

That’s all his family knows about the events surrounding his death Sunday along U.S. 283. The 31-year-old Air Force captain was on his bicycle when he was hit by a truck, a mile south of the town of Blair.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol is still investigating his death.

Steven’s mother, Faye, serves on the Hurst-Euless-Bedford school board. She said Tuesday that …

Video: Bi-national bike share will have riders crossing international border

By Ray Bogan | www.foxnews.com

Around the world, cities have embraced bike-sharing programs such as Citibike, Zagster and BCycle as an alternative way to commute. But a new idea in west Texas will allow riders to go country to country.

El Paso, Texas city planners are developing a bike share with Juarez, Mexico. The bikes would be stationed near downtown El Paso, where over 13,000 people cross the border everyday. …

Sixth company hopes to join the Dallas bike share battle

By: FOX4News.com Staff | www.fox4news.com

A sixth bike share company may be coming to Dallas.

Dallas already has 20,000 colorful bicycles scattered about the city, mostly in downtown and nearby neighborhoods. At least one Dallas council member says it’s too many.

The city manager said in a memo late Friday that the city has received 200 complaints just in the past three weeks. It’s evidence that the hands-off approach to regulating bike share in Dallas has problems.

Mayor Pro Tem Dwaine Caraway says it was a mistake to open bike share up to any company with …

When Will the Big Chill End Indoor Bicycling

Texbiker.net Posted on February 12, 2018 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 12, 2018

The cold weather continues keeping me inside on the Cycleops Fluid Trainer today. 47 degrees while I was on the trainer with an overcast sky. The Blue Norcross AL is racking up some miles but not much on the road. I may need to consider a special trainer tire rather than wearing out the Continental Gatorskin on the back tire.

Endurance was the trainer theme today. At the 4 mile point I shift into the 36 x 15 gears and tried to hold the rpms at 89 to 91 until I reached 11 miles where I shifted to a smaller gear to cool down. Around the 9 mile point my legs starting to send messages that this was causing some issues but I pedaled on. This is not as dramatic as intervals but does seem to stress the legs. If I get back on the road I hope this trainer activity helps.

PowerPod and Elemnt computer were friendly today, handing off the information without any extra button pushing.

Weather forecast for Tuesday says a high of 55 which means another day on the trainer. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday look to be in the 70’s before the next cold spell arrives on Saturday.
