About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Designing Greenways for Diverse Users

D’Lyn Ford | news.ncsu.edu

With greenways taking root in urban areas across the country, understanding who visits – and why – can help improve trail planning and design. A new study of greenways in Atlanta and San Antonio, Texas, offers insights for urban planners, park designers, neighborhood groups and local residents.

These linear parks have potential for conserving natural resources and improving public health. A greenway can help city dwellers enjoy the outdoors, create space for exercise and recreation, and …

It Is Too Soon to Regulate Dallas’ Bike Share Companies?

BY PETER SIMEK | www.dmagazine.com

Rather than creating clutter, the companies have simply—and somewhat unwittingly—revealed flaws in human behavior and urban design.

Bicycle share companies have quickly become one of Dallas residents’ favorite things to gripe about, and City Hall now seems poised to draw up new rules that will regulate how those companies will operate. But it is too soon to clamp down on them, regardless of how chaotic and unseemly the bike share experiment may seem. Here’s why. …

Transit advocate hopes to push toll road agency beyond highways

By Ben Wear | www.mystatesman.com

John Langmore, part of a Capital Metro board that helped stabilize the transit agency several years ago when its finances, leadership and reputation were at low point, now will join the board overseeing the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority.

…The agency allows transit buses to run toll-free on its roads, and has built bike and pedestrian paths on each of its highway projects (though only on parts of North MoPac Boulevard). But mobility authority officials have been unenthusiastic about shouldering the …

Indoor Intervals Bike Trainer Workout

Texbiker.net Posted on January 30, 2018 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 30, 2018

As predicted today’s bike activity was on the Cycleops Fluid Trainer. The temperature just wouldn’t get above 60 degrees when it came time to make the decision of indoor or outdoor biking. The sky was a nice blue and the wind wasn’t too bad but I could not brave the chilly atmosphere.

Riding intervals felt like a good workout with 7 intervals where with the Elemnt computer showing 24 mph top speed except for 1. SportTracks thinks I didn’t ride that fast though. I produced some sweat anyway.

The weather is supposed to warm up on Wednesday and I hope to ride outside.

Why Strava is damaging for mountain biking (as well as military security)

by Hannah Dobson | singletrackworld.com

I’ve been thinking about this issue for a while, and now it’s hit the mainstream press. Strava is all over the news for revealing, through its heatmap function, the location of various military installations. Oops. While we might have a bit of a giggle at the foolishness of supposedly highly trained undercover CIA operatives uploading their patrol routes to Strava as they try and reach their 10,000 steps a day target, I think us mountain bikers need to take a look at ourselves too. …

Some Gravel With That Wind Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on January 29, 2018 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 29, 2018

First ride since Friday. Saturday rained out any bike ride and Sunday it didn’t warm up to my tolerance point until after 1 pm. Today it got to 65 degrees and I rolled out the driveway at 11:51 am. Clear blue sky with a stiff 15 mph wind from the north. This time I bundled up with shorts, leg warmers, thermal long sleeve jersey, short sleeve jersey, wind breaker jacket and full finger gloves. The wind had a bite to it and I near did over heat though the sun felt nice whenever I rode in it. But I could feel the coolness in the shade.

I saw a few other cyclists along the route. Most were bundled up like me but one at Atascocita Shores Drive and FM 1960 looked to be more thick skinned than me; no leg warmers and just a loose jersey over shorts.

Riding east over Lake Houston on the FM 1960 causeway I got a taste of gravel biking. The gravel TXDot spread on the sections with water flowing under piled up on the shoulder making for a bumpy road surface. The concrete underneath poked through in places but I sprayed rocks around some. Strangely the gravel disappeared on the west bound side of the road.

No stops to rest but twice I needed to pull up the leg warmers under the shorts legs. The slick fabric doesn’t stay put.

Finishing at 2:29 pm the temperature moved to 67 degrees but the wind chill still was there. The low humidity (34%) might have added to the chill.

Tuesday the temperature may only reach 60 degrees which will keep me inside. Back to the trainer.
