About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Zagster thinks it has a fix for Dallas’ bike-share problem

by Robert Wilonsky | www.dallasnews.com

Days after Dallas’ city manager fired a warning shot across the fender of the bike-share companies cluttering up the city’s sidewalks, we get word of yet another rental service eyeing Dallas.

This one vows it’s a different breed of bike-share — a cross between the docked system Dallas originally wanted but could not afford and the brightly colored free-for-alls lining sidewalks between downtown and Uptown, Lower Greenville and the Cedars. The new bike-share company won’t allow riders to ditch their buck-an-hour rent-a-rides just anywhere. Bikes will only be considered returned when they’re locked to a “fixed object” — like, say, a bike rack or a parking meter. …

Bike Ride Across Texas 2018 Hardin-Simmons University – Leadership Studies Program Hurricane Harvey Relief Ride

Wheel Brothers | www.wheelbrothers.com

What do you do with an extra week of Christmas break prior to the start of the Spring semester? If you have a track record of long-distance bicycle rides and a new bike-rack trailer, you plan a winter bicycle ride across Texas. And if you have family and connections to people who suffered and had homes and property damaged by Hurricane Harvey, you use your long-distance ride to remind people along the route about the continuing relief and rebuilding needs along the Texas Gulf Coast. …

Wind Chill With Extreme Watts Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on January 22, 2018 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 22, 2018

I bundled up for today’s ride for good reason. Even though the temperature was 64 degrees when I rolled out at 11:35 am the 15 mph NW wind had a chilling bite to it. I rode the “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route for the first time this year going 33.41 miles. The wardrobe: leg warmers, shorts, long sleeve thermal jersey, windbreaker jacket and half finger gloves. I should have worn full finger gloves with the wind chill. It was 66 degrees when I finished at 2:08 pm.

Bicycling to the north put me facing away from the sun and into the wind adding to the chill effect. After I warmed up the wind chill wasn’t so bad but every time I turned into the wind I had to grit my teeth some.

The bridges still have the rock from the recent ice storm so riding on the shoulder pushed me into the traffic lane more than usual. Not sure how long it will take for this wash away or be carried off by the traffic tires.

During the ride I thought the PowerPod was not calculating the power correctly with watts just barely over 100 when I pedaled hard into the wind or up the incline at Community Drive. I didn’t think of anything until around the 18 mile mark when I changed the angle the PowerPod some. Quickly the watts jumped to 1062 which I liked but probably is not correct so I moved it again and the watts fell into the 300 to 400 range which was closer to reality. This was while I biked to the west on Valley Ranch Parkway into the wind. I tightened the PowerPod bolt and I will watch this on future rides. The Elemnt also thinks my max speed was 140.5 mph while Strava calculated 23.7 mph.

The sky had a few clouds thanks to the rain front moving through during the night. Overcast sky is gone for a couple of days. It will be a couple of degrees cooler Tuesday which will require a similar wardrobe as today.

Making progress on my January goal with 83.6 miles to date.

Wind Power, PowerPod Power, Leg Power Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on January 21, 2018 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 21, 2018

The ride started at 12:30 pm with an overcast sky, 72 degrees and the wind from the south at 18 mph, gusts to 27 mph. I was optimistic about feeling warm and wore shorts, long sleeve jersey and a short jersey. This was okay until I crossed Lake Houston on FM 1960 where that wind made it feel like a freezer. That was the spot where leg warmers would have been warmly welcomed. I rode the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route for a total of 31.87 miles moving my road miles to 50.2. That leaves 250 miles to reach my goal for the month.

I wasn’t the only cyclist out today as I passed two others along the route.

Streets were damp in places and when I finished the ride I had to wipe down the Stradalli to preserve the clean bike after I washed it yesterday. Today was only some dirt while yesterday was full out dirt.

Finishing at 2:47 pm the wind was still strong but helped me from FM 1960 to the north. I was glad to pull into the garage and get out of it.

As you can see below I got the PowerPod and speed sensor to talk to each other and registered the watts for the ride. I did go through the 1 to 100 count up as the PowerPod calculated whatever it does before it started recording the power numbers. Last night I read the setup instructions for the PowerPod and found a step I must have skipped; hold the start button on the PowerPod 4 seconds as the speed sensor is spinning and the LED is flashing. That did the trick. Also the new battery I put sin the speed sensor yesterday is still working. Maybe using the hair dryer to be sure the moisture was gone before putting the new battery in helped. I got that hint from the Wahoo Fitness Google Forums.

Last week I listened to the Outspoken Cyclist podcast. Max Leonard was one of the guests. He authored a book titled “Higher Calling” about bicycling in the mountains. He talked about a recent obsession called “Everesting” where cyclists ride the equivalent altitude gain that Mount Everest is above sea level in 24 hours. That is 29,029 feet. I don’t think I rode that much altitude in a whole year and I am not sure how I could do that in the Houston area because it is so flat. Maybe in the Hill Country but that might require biking up the same hill over 100 times. Maybe a new challenge on Strava?

Another “cold” front is supposed to pass through during the night so I am not sure what that will mean for riding on Monday.
