About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Another Dead Battery Slows Indoor Trainer Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on January 13, 2018 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 13, 2018

Finally the sun shine arrived but temperatures are well below my outdoor bicycling threshold of 60 degrees. It was 28 degrees when I made it to the breakfast area around 7:15 AM. By the time I got ready to ride the Cycleops Fluid Trainer after 10 AM it warmed up to the lower 40’s. I need to ride outdoors to see if I can still balance the bike!

Speed sensor battery problems continued this morning. I thought I was okay when I spun the rear wheel and saw the little blue LED flashing but by the time I got on the bike the sensor stopped. To complicate the matter the Elemnt computer did a firmware update too. I removed the speed sensor to check the battery. Yesterday I drove to Humble to the Batteries Plus store to buy a battery tester and more 2032 batteries. I figured their batteries would be fresh. I got Duracell and Rayovac and the tester.

Taking the battery out of the speed sensor and checked it with battery tester. It indicated the battery needed to be replaced, too weak. This was a battery that had only been used once during yesterday’s workout. I decided to use a Duracell 2032 and checked it with the tester, it showed a strong “good”. I put it in the sensor and the sensor back on the rear hub. It was flashing a strong blue.

Now after the firmware update the PowerPod sensor connected to the Elemnt but the speed and cadence would not. After trying several ideas I turned the Elemnt off. I had rode 1.52 miles while trying to get all of the sensors talking but the PowerPod and speed sensors did not look like the data had recorded so I deleted the ride and started over. Now all of the sensors connected after a delay while my phone and the Elemnt paired. I was ready for the workout. From there the workout went as planned.

More cold weather on Sunday so an indoor workout is probably the only option.

SURFSIDE — Jessyca and Ryanne Krueger are no strangers to the devastation left by Hurricane Harvey. Their dad’s house in Angleton had 2 feet of water inside and their sister’s house suffered the same fate.

It was these personal experiences that inspired the sisters to participate in Hardin-Simmons University Leadership Studies program’s Bike Ride Across Texas to raise money for Harvey survivors.

TxDOT plans meetings on proposed widening of FM 2920

By Mayra Cruz | www.chron.com

The Texas Department of Transportation will be taking public comment at two meetings over the proposed widening of the 17-mile stretch of FM 2910 between Texas 249 and U.S. 290.

The construction project would widen FM 2920 to four lanes from the current two lanes between U.S. 290 to Cypress Rosehill Road.

It would also widen the same road to six lanes from four lanes between Cypress Rosehill Road to Texas 249, add a grassy median, sidewalks and a bicycle lane. …

Cyclists ride the trail on the Salado Creek Greenway, part of the Howard W. Peak Greenway Trails System — one of the many things for which we, as a community, should be thankful, according to a reader.

Reason for thanks

While I was biking on the fabulous Howard Peak Greenway near my house, I thought about how much we have to be grateful for in San Antonio and Bexar County. (One of my resolutions — not just this year but every year — is to be more thankful.)

Not only have city and county employees enhanced our outdoor experiences with these biking/walking trails and sidewalks, parks and other outdoor services, but we encounter their services every day. Who picks up your trash, repairs your roads, …

City mulls permits for bike sharing companies

Peggy Heinkel-Wolfe | www.dentonrc.com

The Denton City Council is expected to talk about rules for new bike-sharing companies in February.

So-called “dockless” bike-sharing came to North Texas and to Denton last year, and complaints soon followed. Rental bikes are left in key spots around town. A rider uses a smartphone application to unlock the bike and ride it for $1 an hour. Because the bikes aren’t intended to be parked at docking stations, some …

Cold Weather, Dead Battery Cycleops Fluid Trainer Bike Workout

Texbiker.net Posted on January 12, 2018 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 12, 2018

After taking several days off due a sinus problem I got back on the bike and rode indoors on the new Cycleops Fluid Trainer. It is much quieter than the windtrainer version. Smoother too!

I lowered the workout intensity since this is the first workout after the sinus problems. Checking YouTube.com I found numerous workouts that I may give a shot at in a couple of days.

Outside it was a cool 40 degrees when I started and a balmy 44 when I stopped about 55 minutes later. I continue to have battery problems with the Wahoo Speed sensor. I changed the 2032 battery out to get it working so I used 4 batteries in 5 workouts. Not sure what the problem is. I need a battery tester. Once the battery was in all of the sensors were happy and data flowed.

The cold front will hang around until the first of the week and then another could arrive. I hope January can get above 60 degrees.
