About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

By Dug Begley| www.houstonchronicle.com

The Houston area’s first foray into dockless bikes deployed Friday in The Woodlands, where officials said the community more aligned with cars is ready for a new way to get around.

“It has taken a pretty good amount of time to happen, but we wanted to make sure we got it right,” said Nick Wolda, president of Visit the Woodlands, the township’s local tourism board. …

The Best of the Worst Dallas Bike-Share Fails

STEPHEN YOUNG | www.dallasobserver.com

Many things aren’t clear about Dallas’ growing hoard of bike-share bikes — how many of them there are, whether their owners will ever make money off of them or if they’re just separating Silicon Valley venture capitalists from their cash — but some things are. The bikes, as evidenced by the fact that China’s MoBike debuted in the city over the weekend, aren’t going …

Novice 1-6-18 Pretty but COLD, Let’s Ride!

brookepretzel | www.planobicycle.org

New name for this group, Hard Core Novice. Let’s get rolling at 8am. So be ready for the speech at 7:45. It will be a balmy 38 degrees with the sun shining, low winds out of the south, and no precipitation. Yay! It’s not going to warm up much but will feel better than it has. It looks better than Sunday, so join us and we will start out our New Year right. We can move at a 12-13 mph pace if there are our Novice regulars. Everyone is welcome though and we will adjust to the group, this is a no-drop ride!

1/6/18 Tweeners Ride 8:00am Start

wood6814 | www.planobicycle.org

It will be a bit on the chilly side at 8:00am, but 38 degrees practically seems balmy compared to recent days. Dress in layers and be thankful it’s predicted to be sunny to keep us warm until we truly warm up and need to start shedding layers at the rest stop.

Let’s meet by 7:45 at the north end of the parking lot for sign-in and a pre-ride chat. We will ride our usual 42 miles at about 15.5 – 16.0 mph

Please do not park in front of the day care.

Cold Weather Break Ahead But Indoor Cycling Today

Texbiker.net Posted on January 4, 2018 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 4, 2018

The cold weather might loosen up later today with the high in the 50’s but I am still inside riding the Cycleops windtrainer. Yesterday I was curious about when I bought the trainer and after searching Quicken I found out it was 12/27/1999. What a coincidence that BikeTiresDirect.com sent me an email with a sale on trainers. After some deliberation I decided 17 years was time to retire the windtrainer and bought a Cycleops Fuid Indoor Trainer. Supposedly this will be a lot quieter and smoother. With all of the sensors and Powerpod I have I cannot justify spending $400 to $600 on a smart trainer when the vast majority of my time I ride on the road. Plus I do not see the value in services like Zwift.

I decided to stop my Strava premium account when it expires in April and subscribed to SportTracks. SportTracks handles indoor rides separately from outdoor rides, has better goal settings and I have the desktop software that interfaces with the web version.

Sunday it might get to the 70’s and I hope to be on the road for a few miles at least.

What It Will Take for Bike Share to Be Profitable in Dallas

Stephen Young | www.dallasobserver.com

For now, as bike sharing in Dallas rolls toward the end of its unregulated Wild West phase, the game for the five companies in business in the city has been pretty simple. They’ve put as many of their bikes on the streets as they can, mostly thanks to a stream of Silicon Valley or Chinese venture capital, and promoted their brands through friendly interviews given to local media and with vibrantly colored bikes and promises of $1 rides. To …
