About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Adding PowerPod to Cycleops Indoor Bike Workout

Texbiker.net Posted on January 3, 2018 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 3, 2018

Sounds like a broken record but it was cold outside again this morning with 24 degrees when I got the kitchen this morning. Needless to say I am indoors again on the Cycleops windtrainer. It is supposed to up to the low 50’s by the afternoon but this is till below my wimpy 60 degree threshold.

In my quest for a cheap “smart” trainer and utilizing all of the gear I have, today I configured the PowerPod for indoor training. It was simple to change from outdoors using the Isaac software. Add the trainer and then switch the mode to indoor. When I started the workout I checked the Elemnt computer sensor readings and the PowerPod was connected but the watts did not appear on the Elemnt screen. I continued on for a few minutes and decided to pair the PowerPod with the Elemnt again thinking maybe it pairs for indoors separate from the outdoors. As soon as I did that the watts appeared on the Elemnt screen. Now I wonder when I eventually ride outdoors again if I will have a problem. Time will tell.

As I write this the desktop picture on my computer shows a nice sunny beach in Cancun from our cruise about two years ago in February. I wish it were that warm here.

Time to start training for Houston’s annual BP MS 150 charity bike ride

By Ken Hoffman | houston.culturemap.com

Again this April, I will jump on my trusty, rusty old bicycle and pedal from Houston to Austin in the BP MS 150, the biggest and most successful weekend charity ride in the world. Yeah, the world.

This year is going to be different, though. I’m actually going to train — for real — so I don’t wake up crying with leg cramps the next week. (Ever get those? Man, they hurt.) The BP MS 150 is …

May the Road Rise to Meet You

Lisa Tilley | www.wheelbrothers.com

January 1, 2018. It’s just a calendar date. And this is NOT a story about New Year’s resolutions. This is simply about you.

For as many years as you’ve been pedaling, there are probably twice as many reasons you can list as your motivations to pedal. How did you even start? Was it serendipitous? Has cycling always been a part of your life? How much have you changed as a rider since your first time on a bike? Have you encouraged, inspired and supported others to pedal? Are you …

Too Cold To Ride Outdoors

Texbiker.net Posted on January 2, 2018 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 2, 2018

Back on the Cycleops windtrainer today because it was 34 degrees outside, way below my tolerance level. Inside it was 69 degrees.

Yesterday I learned that Strava lumps all of my activity together which is not what I want. In my opinion road rides should be separate from indoor virtual riding. So I deleted the activities and will keep track of them in SportTracks which allows me to separate them so the miles do not count against my road goals. If SportTracks can do it I would think Strava could. I found a bunch of threads from people on both sides of the fence.

Bikes, bonds and big plans: 6 things to watch at Dallas City Hall in 2018

www.dallasnews.com

Dallas City Hall spent 2017 staring down the ghosts of years and decades past: Confederate monuments, the police and fire pension mess, the Trinity toll road, four of six back-pay lawsuits and billions in deferred maintenance.
Save for the sudden arrival of Amazon or another twist, 2018 shouldn’t be as dramatic as last year. But consequences are still ahead at Dallas City Hall in the coming year.
Here are six things to watch in the new year. …

  1. Bike regulations
A LimeBike and Spin bike are left in front of Union Station in downtown Dallas. (Ron Baselice/Staff Photographer)
Last year brought thousands of brightly colored, buck-an-hour bikes to the city’s sidewalks. The four bike-share companies have received both credit and criticism.
In 2018, the city will at least tap the brakes on the unregulated market. The bikes are likely here to stay, but the era of the bike share “experiment” or “pilot program,” as city officials have called it, will come to an end. Regulations limiting the number of bikes appear to be coming. Options will be presented to the council in the new year. …
