About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Getting there gets easier

DAVID TAFFET | www.dallasvoice.com

Jeff Roberts and Kellye Tallent show off some of LimeBike’s inventory. (David Taffet/ Dallas Voice)

LimeBike wants to be a solution to Dallas’ mobility problems and help reduce the area’s carbon footprint

Locally, people have burned 2.3 million calories riding LimeBikes since the bright-lime-green-colored bikes were put on the streets of Dallas in August. That’s the equivalent of working off 4,085 Big Macs.

Currently LimeBike has 2,600 bicycles on Dallas streets (and bike trails, sidewalks and medians) — probably …

Veterans donate bikes to honor a friend’s memory

William Patrick | www.palestineherald.com

Santa has a new helper this year; the city’s disadvantaged children have a new friend.

Rod Skelton, take a bow.

Skelton, a retired pastor from the Montalba Baptist Church and a Vietnam combat-Marine veteran, spearheaded efforts to donate 10 bicycles to the Palestine Herald-Press annual toy drive.

For many years, Palestine residents Elton “Bubba” Harrel and his wife, Carol, made the dreams of many city children come true by donating 10 bicycles a year to the charity event. …

Changing Houston, one little fix a time

Eric Leshinsky, Taylor McNeill, Leslie Wren | www.houstonchronicle.com

Trees divide a pop-up bike lane on Eldridge Parkway during the Cigna Sunday Streets on Sunday, Dec. 3, 2017, in Houston.

Using colored duct tape, spray chalk and stencils, we were done in 10 minutes. The results were just as immediate: Cars stopped well in advance of this modified intersection, and pedestrians walked with new confidence.

The participants in the project were equally quick to react – “We’re allowed to do this?” asked many. In East Austin, we were transforming a crosswalk, an exercise in DIY pedestrian infrastructure that was part of …

C.O.P. – Cyclist On Patrol

The Tip | www.bikemojo.com

I was thinking about making up a tee shirt with that printed on it. Maybe with a sub text of “keeping your home safer.”

We need to change the perception of cyclists. Change from being regarded as pests, to being known as good for society. And we are. Studies have shown that trails increase property values and lower crime. No study that I can find says that a trail increased crime. But this is what adjacent home owners are always afraid of when new trail is being proposed. New trails should be easily welcomed, not so vehemently protested.

So just maybe a non-riding home owner will see the shirt and ask what it means. Then I can educate them to the benefits of having riders on close by trail.

Just half a brain storming.

Dumb idea? …

Austin Orders Up a Street That Puts Transit, Biking, and Walking First

By Angie Schmitt | usa.streetsblog.org

You’d never know by looking at the allocation of space on Guadalupe Street that it’s one of Austin’s busiest routes for walking and transit — cars get most of the real estate. But that could change soon.

Known locally as “The Drag,” Guadalupe Street is a busy commuting route to downtown as well as a commercial street. It also borders the University of Texas campus and sees enormous foot traffic.

During the daily peak on the busiest mile of Guadalupe Street, about …
