About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Brownsville debates best course for old rail corridor

By STEVE CLARK | www.brownsvilleherald.com

Years ago, when officials first started talking about relocating eight miles of Union Pacific rail line from West Brownsville to a new route outside of town, the assumption was that the old railroad right-of-way, once the tracks were gone, would be turned into a road stretching from the B&M International Bridge to what is now I-69E.

Accordingly, the Barnard family, owners of …

Sunday Bike Ride in Kingwood

Texbiker.net Posted on November 26, 2017 by Rick AnkrumNovember 26, 2017

I got home late from church and with the blue sky and 75 degree temperature I decided to go for a bike ride. I didn’t hit the open roads but chose to ride the streets and trails in Kingwood for a total of 15.7 miles. I started at 1:28 Pm and finished at 2:41 PM. I rode my Blue Norcross AL bike for some variety.

Wardrobe choices: long sleeve jersey, short sleeve jersey and shorts. I hesitated to wear the long sleeve jersey but once out the door I was glad I did because the wind chill would have made me cold.

There were several “casual” cyclists out along the route enjoying the weather.

Still a few days left in November to ride if the weather will cooperate.

Could ‘dockless’ bike-share be an Uber-Lyft replay for Austin?

By Ben Wear and Pam LeBlanc | www.mystatesman.com

The sudden appearance of several dozen “dockless” bikes back in March might have a familiar ring to anyone who watched Uber and Lyft barge unauthorized into the Austin market back in 2014.
The rental bicycles, some of them bright yellow and others a non-Austintatious shade of orange, simply showed up here and there on downtown Austin streets as South by Southwest kicked off. City officials, looking at the Ofo and Spin logos on the bikes — some properly upright on kick-stands, others lying …

November 25th 80 Degree Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on November 25, 2017 by Rick AnkrumNovember 25, 2017

80 degrees on November 25th! This is why I live in Houston. I couldn’t stay inside and rode the Stradalli Red Pro 14 on the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route for a total of 34.1 miles. This puts November at 427 miles and YTD is now 7,240 miles. I need to ride 190 miles to reach my stretch goal for the year of 7,430 miles. This could be the last 80 degree day of 2017 but there are several 70 degree days in next week’s forecast. A partly cloudy sky accompanied the warmth and the wind was 5 mph from the south.

Starting at 11:19 AM I didn’t expect to see any other cyclists but when I came to the stop light at Atascocita Shores Drive and FM 1960 two lady cyclists were stopped in the left turn lane on FM 1960 waiting to turn left towards me. When there was a break in the traffic I made my right turn onto FM 1960 and waved and they waved back. The rest of the ride went as planned and I finished at 1:52 PM.

I am testing an online program called SportTracks which syncs with the desktop version SportTracks 3 which I have used for 8 years. I tried this before but didn’t see the value for $59 per year but they added goals and I like the way the data is presented so I will probably sign up when my free trial runs out. Below is a screenshot of today’s ride summary.
