About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

You may not remember when BikeHouston transitioned from a scrappy, all-volunteer organization to a scrappy, full-time nonprofit advocacy group. That transition was successful, and it couldn’t have happened without Rick Hecksel.
Around the time that BikeHouston was establishing itself and taking on staff, Rick was wrapping up a long career as a CPA. Volunteer talent was — and still is — essential to the …

Silver Car Upside Down Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on November 15, 2017 by Rick AnkrumNovember 15, 2017

I got a later start on today’s bike ride because I was finishing up installing a new outdoor TV antenna to improve our reception. Last week I disconnected our satellite service to become a cord cutter. Starting at 12:29 PM the sky was overcast to mostly cloudy, 76 degrees (74% humidity) with a light 4 mph breeze. The routes was “Kingwood – FM1485 – Kingwood” for a total of 28.3 miles. I only need 48 miles to reach the 360 mile goal for November and 298 miles to reach 7,430 miles for the year.

My wardrobe choice was a long sleeve and short sleeve jersey over bike shorts. I probably could’ve not worn the long sleeve jersey as the temperature warmed to 80 degrees by the time I finished at 2:30 PM but some times the wind was chilly and I prefer hot to cold.

Sadly as I rode north on the I-69/US59 service road there were lots of flashing lights as I approached the FM 1314 exit from the freeway. When I got there a silver car was upside down in the grass between the service road and the freeway. Two DPS troopers were at the back of the car looking at stuff from the car. I didn’t see an ambulance so no idea what happened to the person(s) inside. By the time I returned on the south bound service road there was no sign of the accident. I said a prayer for the people involved.

With the light wind and moderate weather I built my average speed up to 15.2 mph for a short period before getting back to Kingwood and slowing down. Average power was 88 watts but I got up to 95 watts average at one point. Sometimes when the wind is helping watts is not very meaningful.

Warm weather will stick around through Saturday and I plan on biking. Sunday a cold front should arrive and biking will slow way down.

Blue Norcross AL to Huffman Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on November 14, 2017 by Rick AnkrumNovember 14, 2017

Yesterday I thought I might not ride today but when I went out to get the newspaper the clear blue sky and warming temperature were too much to not ride. I set out on the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route at 11:36 AM riding the Blue Norcross AL bike for a different feel while biking. The early morning weather got even better by then with the temperature at 75 and the blue sky holding nothing back. Even though the it felt warm I decided to wear the short sleeve and long sleeve jersey combination. This was wise as I rode in the shade a lot during the first 7 or 8 miles. The wind showed as calm but when I was moving this wasn’t the case.

The Blue Norcross AL is different from the Stradalli in several areas: weight, tire width and gearing. Before starting the ride I aired the tires up to 80 psi to help the rolling resistance without making the ride too bumpy. I can tell the weight difference whenever a slight incline comes along but I think this is good to put a different weight load on my legs. It’s like running with ankle weights. When I get back on the Stradalli the weight difference helps me propel the bike faster and the inclines are not so hard.

No rest stop today. The Huffman Chevron will have to wait another day for me to visit.

More great weather until Sunday which should allow me to get closer to my November mileage goal. How I stand after today’s bike ride:

  • 70 miles so far this week
  • 283 miles for the month; 77 miles from my 360 mile goal
  • 7,103 miles YTD; 327 miles from my 7,430 mile goal
